Xbox Series X 2TB Console Galaxy Black Special Edition $899 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

Started a Reddit Thread a couple days ago asking if this Galaxy Edition is likely to ever go on sale. The overwhelming response was NO.

Looks like us lads in Australia have gotten lucky!

Oos around much of the world it seems, yet isn’t really a problem in Aus and we also get a $100 AUD discount. Which isn’t much, however, as good as it gets for now and JB are the only Retailer offering any kind of discount, and this is the first time since Launch.

I get many think it’s a waste. This isn’t for you though. It’s my first Series X so the obvious choice for me. Purchased one an hour ago.

No price. Also every console goes on sale eventually.

    • +3

      Certainly not the PS5 30th :(

      • Yes a fair point but only because its limited release. The standard pro certainly will. If you want a 30th you will likely have to wait until PS6 comes out and then you will get one.

        • Pro already has I thought

Started a Reddit Thread a couple days ago asking if this Galaxy Edition is likely to ever go on sale. The overwhelming response was NO lmfao.

So you’re only posting this because you feel vindicated, right.

    • +4

Haha maybe a little. But mainly because it seemed unlikely by all discussion yet here we are in Aus being the lucky ones.

Gotta share it on OzBargain. 😉

      • +12

People really butthurt about me sharing the 50-odd comment Reddit thread discussing whether this console is likely to be discounted (stupid question whatever yeah yeah) 2 days ago. Too funny. 🤪

    • -1

      I mean, also cause it's a bargain…

      • Not sure I’d call $900 for a four year old gaming console a ‘bargain’.

  • +3

Started a Reddit Thread a couple days ago asking if this Galaxy Edition is likely to ever go on sale. The overwhelming response was NO lmfao

You asked on a global Xbox subreddit if it would go on sale?

    • -2

If it’s likely was my question.

      • +4

Not sure how anyone could have been able to answer whether there was going to be a sale without specifying you were in Oz and/or having a crystal ball.

I still think this is overpriced even with a discount. Would have just got an external hard drive, thrown glitter at a black console and still been ahead $ wise. You even commented exactly 1 year ago for a deal for $649 for 1T + Diablo 4 which was a much better deal than this imo

        • +11

          $250 more for:

          -2TB
          -smaller chip that runs cooler
-Limited design with many OG Xbox Green touches (not everyone’s taste sure).
-Limited controller that looks pretty sweet

I think you’re being dramatic. $250 less for the plain Xbox isn’t a “much better deal”. Bring on the downvotes. 😏

          • +4

@JC1186: I just like the way you stood your ground. My kids are in PS5 and Meta Quest 3 so this probably isn't for me but I'm thrilled you shared it and I never knew the product even existed before I heard it from you.

            • @seamonkey: Haha thanks. I knew it wouldn’t be a popular product and the comments would reflect this. I’m okay with that, it’s more niche in taste/value and not for everyone. Not a bad choice especially for those new to the ecosystem and wanting the 2TB. For sure it’s harder to justify the Galaxy at merely $100 more than this. 😉

          • @JC1186:

            …Galaxy Black Special Edition…

            -Limited design…

Is this a ‘limited’ (I.e available for a limited time or quantity) or ‘special’ edition (I.e a variant that will be available for the long term?)

            • @YoursTruly: We can presume Microsoft will continue selling a 2TB variant but it’s hard to say whether this design is limited or not from my research.

          • @JC1186: You have a link to the smaller / cooler chip? The only teardowns I have seen are of the new all digital series X.

            • +1

@kudoz: Exactly the same as the digital version is my understanding. 👍

      • Gotta say, really hate questions like that.

  • when does this discount end?

    • No idea sorry

  • +9

    still overprice

  • +15

This makes the PS5 Pro look like a bargain.

    • -1

      yeah its this

      i'd rather put $899 towards a PS5 Pro

      at least its something

      this is nothing

when everything is an xbox, nothing is an xbox

      • -3

Ps5 dont have game pass. Ps5 pro is a waste of an upgrade pointless. Games might look better if you pay enough attention lol.

        • I find PlayStation Plus pretty awesome, but we stacked Deluxe for years awhile back.

          • @seamonkey: Yer its ok but be better if they did like game pass and give day one games in the service. Game pass is much better value especially with call of duty franchise now included.

      • +2

I'd rather that as well, IF the PS5 Pro cost $899.
Unfortunately, it actually costs $1199, without a stand or (worse, IMO) disc drive.
I'd even gladly pay $999 if it came with a disc drive.

        • You don't even need a stand its stands on its own with no issues…sure if you got kids or pets running amok in the house that might be an issue but in that case just lie it flat. Yes its expensive and has no disc drive and even if you wanted one they are OOS everywhere…shrugs and personally i hate WHITE, but it is what it is and for me i've always been a Sony Devotee…so i was always going to get the latest one regardless of price and i do notice a difference in the upgrade, the games just pop more and look better especially on a good late model OLED. If you are running a shitty older TV i wouldn't bother. I only paid $400 for mine so it was no major loss…(traded 2 OG PS5 disc editions one unopened lol). Yes that should ruffle some feathers….

    • +2

Yes this makes the $1200 console look like a bargain.

    • -2

The Ps5 pro barely performs on par with the series xbox.

      • lol…

        • It can still only get 4K @ 60HZ.

          SX can do 4K @ 120 and 8K @ 60

          • @imurgod: PS5 Pro Enhanced Games: The PS5 Pro has the capability to run games at 4K 120Hz, but it depends on the specific game and its optimization for the PS5 Pro’s hardware.
The amount of games that run in 8k would be pretty small and not many people have 8k TV's its not really worth investing in 8k anything until formats catch up. 4k is more than enough for 99% of everything i would say for at least another 5+ years.

  • +7

I feel like this colour scheme is less attractive than the simple timeless minimal black. This looks to me as ‘unfinished and dirty’.

  • +1

I've got 2 i'm invested in the xbox ecosystem but apart from me adding exernal USB drives what is the benefit of this. I can get one now for ~600.

I need another one. I have multiple man lands and multiple annoying women.

  • +10

Wow you really showed those reddit people 😳

    • -4

You think I care about showing Reddit peeps lmao. Okay then. Sure. Wow what a glorious win I just had over that Reddit thread let’s go I’m the best! 🙄

It’s to illustrate the stock shortage globally and the lack of any historical sales worth mentioning. I hate the internet sometimes. 🤪

  • +7

Looks like us lads in Australia have gotten lucky!

have we really though? <cue Chris Hemsworth squinting>

Comes with a free copy of Starfield too.

yeah that sounds as welcome as kick in the balls from Todd Howard

    • Don't give Todd Howard future DLC ideas.

  • +1

Shame starfield is largely worthless, could ideally have dumped it ASAP to knock some dosh back into your pocket.

900 is fine in a sense. It's better than 800 for the standard one.

But 800 is a joke when it was 750 four (profanity) years ago. I love my X, and my S even more, but the fact prices are going up for consoles instead of down is (profanity) frightening and I wish we'd all just say no until they drop.

900 now, can't recommend. I love the x and s but 4 years in I'd say buy a pre-owned S for 200/250 on marketplace and wait out the next box.

    • Yeah, and $749 on launch was kinda scary tbh!

  • If you really, really want this for whatever reason and have the Amex Microsoft cashback ($800 spend, $200 back) then it'd be $799 direct from Microsoft minus whatever other cashback scheme or discounted voucher deal stack you have.

  • +1

I understand that starfield physical disc does not even contain the full game (like many Xbox series games disc).

A download of an additional 50ish or so is required….

Kind of useless to own physical media on Xbox it seems. I personally just opt for ps5 games or switch games these days.

    • Do you own an Xbox with a disc drive?

    • +1

to be fair, I"ve been 99.5% digital for the last few years, and primarily on Xbox, I've only bought a handful of disc games this entire generation, one of which was Jedi Survivor (on PS5 because I didn't want to delete shit off my Xbox), shocker, the disc had the prologue and nothing else.

It's not just an Xbox problem.

  • Good price. Thank you :)

  • +3

    I just want the controller

  • +6
    1. Inflate price for new product
    2. Put new product on special
    3. ???
    4. Profit!

Like sorry I love Xbox but $1000 RRP is steep no matter what way you cut it. No wonder Xbox is struggling to sell.

    • -2

Couldn’t agree more at full RRP. I think we all share that opinion. I’m just a sucker for liking a design and appreciating it more than I should (if I was wiser with money). But hey it makes some people happy and is more future proof with double the M2 drive size and looks pretty cool imo. The white and green paint specks GLOWING would have been all kinds of amazing though! Especially for a “Galaxy” model.

      • +1

I'd be more okay with this if it was a "Pro" version or something, but it's literally just more storage and a paint job?

It's no more future proof than the Series X and an external 1TB SSD, a console that was released over 4 years ago. You can use the savings from buying a 1TB SSD to get a skin for your existing Xbox.

        • -4

Smaller chip that’s a little more efficient and runs cooler. That counts for something (little bit still).

Personally as an original Xbox guy from back in 2001 I actually like the green OG touches on top of the design. Always going to be polarising though. 🤷‍♂️

        • -4

So am I crazy or is the 1TB Xbox ssd $300+?

Why is everyone saying that’s the better way and you’ll be ahead when we’re talking $250 more for the Galaxy compared to the standard Series X on sale (around $656)?

          I’m super confused lol.

          • +3

@JC1186: I literally just looked up multiple Xbox compatible SSDs for $100-$150. Yes, the Seagate "made for Xbox" one JB sells is around $300, it's massively inflated price due to the stupid people tax.

            • -4

@pennypincher98: Excuse my ignorance but these drives you’re talking about are every bit as fast as the onboard M2 SSD then I take it? I’m going to assume your comparing apples with apples here.

              • +5

@JC1186: Lol you are so defensive on this overpriced shit, are you sure you're not a JB salesperson?

Yes, you'll get very similar performance because they use the same technology without the stupid tax price tag.

More expensive doesn't always equal better.

                  • +3

@JC1186: What are you on about? All I'm saying is you don't need to spend $300 on a 1TB SSD lol.

Jesus fkn christ dude get some help.

            • @pennypincher98: I know I could just look this up myself. However, when i last looked into building a custom xbox expansion drive there were limited options and they weren't much cheaper than the Seagate one. Has that changed and can you please point me to them? Thanks.

              • -1

@twjr: I’m reading you can store games on them but you have to transfer it across when you want to play them. He left that out of course. So it must be me that’s wrong here

              • -3

@twjr: Sorry to disappoint you bud but he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Absolutely clueless with respect to transfers speeds too. Just ignorance sprinkled with overconfidence. The irony of calling all the people who shop at JB “dumb”. 🤕

  • +1

    This will definitely get cheaper

    • That’s a pretty open ended statement/fluff with no time frame mentioned. A statement like that applies to just about every tech product when newly released haha

      • +5

        Refer to your original question

        • Haha good reply, I’ll give you that!! 😉

  • +3

Managed to order through the Microsoft Store online and through chat an Agent agreed to put authority for a $100 refund on the order once the xbox was received. Gave me a special reference and told me to contact them once it's received and they'll refund the $100.

Crossing my fingers this approach won't cause any issues for the Amex $200 cashback… 2TB Series X for $700 is probably closer to what it's really worth in reality

They wouldn't throw in Starfield though

    • Wow. Great that they accepted your offer in that way. I was thinking of buying this model it ended up with purchasing 1TB expansion card which costed me 180 AUD in Amazon.

But if I knew your way, I could've followed it.

  • +1

    What an ABSOLUTE Rip-Off!

    $900 for a XsX 2TB? $1200 for a PS5Pro?
Might as well go PC if your gonna drop $1000+ for a Console.

The PS5Pro is misleading. "Realistically" it's gonna cost you ~$1800 for a PS5Pro with Optical Disc Drive and a Stand!

The XsX2TB is a Better Deal because of Gamepass.

If XBOX didnt have Gamepass. It would be GG for XBOX.

Sony are very very lucky and fortunate that Micro$oft doesnt act greedy like Sony does.

I'm sure PlayStation would seize to exist in an alternate world "IF" COD, Indiana Jones, Doom, Wolfenstein, Quake, HI-FI Rush, Deathloop, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Dishonored, Tony Hawk, Crash, Spyro, Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, Gears, Forza, Fable, etc. etc. etc. was Playstation "EXCLUDED". Not PlayStation Included.

    • Yes, people only see the price of PS5 Pro. It doesn't see how much it costs if you buy all necessary items. But if you play games only digital, you can save some as no need to buy the external disc drive.

Next year, GTA6 is coming. So, it may be worth buying PS5 pro. However, you can still play it on PS5 and XBX and S.

  • -8

Not a deal. Paid $464 for my 1TB model less than a month ago.

    • -3

      That username…

It definitely NOT APPLICABLE to your comment/ opinion.

      • +2

Kind of is. Besides from an extra gig of storage and tacky glitter on the case it’s the same thing.

      • +3

Your comment doesn’t even make sense.

Just set mine up. About what I expected.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/6T5z6m9

    • I like the green back lighting, what are you using or the lighting?

  • +3

I reckon I could paint my Series X a similar colour scheme by dipping a paintbrush in some paint and then flicking it with my finger.

    • -4

Bahaha I’ve read that a dozen times in the last couple days. Word for word almost. Its uncanny.

Btw you don’t spray paint something by dipping a paint brush and flicking paint. Just fyi.

*edit. Boooo you edited the spray paint out. 😉

      • +2

I didnt edit anything out. But it sounds like there are others who are thinking along the same lines as me, it wouldn't be the first time I've been late to the party though.

  • The colour doesn’t appeal to me, but I think it’s an alright deal for the 2TB storage. A recent deal had a 1TB card for about $175, so that extra TB certainly has value. The benefit of having 2TB internal is that you can also expand to 3 or 4 TB down the line via the free expansion slot (although that will be exy)

Certainly possible to get by with the base 1TB, but it can fill up pretty quickly especially if you have a family of people all wanting to play different games. Moving stuff to a mechanical drives an option, but larger titles can still be a tad slow.

So yeah, might be worth it for the 2TB if you’re in the market for a Series X. I do think now isn’t a good time to buy an Xbox however unless you have a back catalog, want GamePass, or already own a PS5. Probably should wait and see how much of MS catalog ends up shipping on PS5, because currently every indication is that it’ll be a very significant portion. For less money you can get a PS5 that can access more games and has similar performance to a Series X, or spend more and get the PS5 Pro which will end up running many Ms titles better than they do on Xbox.

  • +3

I think the paint job is pretty nice. But it's barely a deal. The cajones of Microsoft to even think about charging $1000 for this in a universe where base PS5 is getting regular discounts and the Pro also exists at the top end.

Let's stop putting die shrinks in the 'win' column. Virtually every console gets one mid-cycle which is never advertised, because no one will notice it via performance or on their power bill. It's to reduce manufacturing cost, aka a win for Microsoft, not you.

Then there's the question as to the value of Starfield. While a few dozen people who were looking to purchase this, will save some money, I honestly value my time too much to spend it playing mediocre 60 hour games, even when they're free.

    • Once you factor in the 2TB expansion SSD for the PS5 on top of what the PS5 Slim Disc console is currently going for it's the same. I just recently during Black Friday bought the PS5 Slim Disc console for $629 on sale from Big W + an extra $268 for the WD SN850P 2TB NVMe PS5 expansion SSD from Amazon Germany. All up $897.

      • You do have closer to 3TB storage with that setup. Also could have spent less for a 2TB drive, like a Lexar NM790.

  • Pre ordered this when I learned it was being released. I knew it wasn't a complete upgrade, but I wanted the extra 1tb of storage (2tb internal) to go with my 2tb expansion card. Stilll have 2.2tb free (usually have just a few hundred mb remaining lol).

I sacrificed my Series S that I hadn't even turned on for years + the original Series X - both of which I purchased below RRP in order to get the Galaxy sku. Came out in front financially + decluttered some older hardware, was a win in my book.

  • Is the Xbox still a thing nowadays? Amazing!

Suppose with a company backing with infinite resources, this could go on forever.

    • Competition is good for gamers! I actually think PS getting so many exclusives, and therefore market share these last few years was a bad thing as it's now made MS go and buy Blizzard/Activision… they have enough cash on hand for Rockstar Games + Electronic Arts plus spare change.

      • Except MSs big money isn’t coming from gaming so there’s likely not a lot of drive in the company to drop another 50-100 billion on gaming acquisitions until they start to see benefits from those purchases. Right now their subscription base seems to be plateauing off and hardware sales lagging dramatically. Shareholders may not accept a bid for EA or the like.

And then of course there’s getting it approved at a legal level. It was a significant effort with massive compromises to get the Activision buyout through. They probably won’t succeed in trying another one of that scale for years to come.

  • +6

So much drama over this post lol!

    • +1

      It’s a bit sad lol

    • +1

The is no shortage of whinging that goes on this site. Some people can’t just ignore a deal that isn’t for them. They have to jump in the comments and start lecturing and arguing with anyone that thinks differently.

  • +2

Decent deal considering it also leaves the expansion port free for another 1tb or 2tb card.
If you really need that much space, I mean a lot of games these days are 70-120gb
