ooouch, there goes another $350m .

    right on target Myki

This incentive started well before Myki.

the comment is aimed at the criminal blowout in implementing a public transport ticketing system.

which is really difficult because no country except Japan, England, France, NZ, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, etc, etc has been able to implement a system that has cost less than sending a robot to another planet.

and claiming that that money is being lost due to a -well stuff me- a problem that was totally inconceivable by the designers, whom, from their mansion or lear jets (because god know they are suffering at the blowout in costs which is hurting them so tragically in their taxes- well alcohol tax on champagne is federal but it's tax to a government agency of sorts).

        ——stopping rant there————

I see 13 people are selfish douchebags who aren't concerned about others not getting to spend Christmas with their family just so some bums can catch a free bus.

      • +1

Services would have been scheduled to run on Christmas day regardless of the fare collected. The public transport staff are likely to be getting penalty rates too - it's not like they don't get paid when there are no fares collected.

        • Which is my point. Why should they be running anyway? Can't we have one day a year where everything is closed? One day where families can be certain they will be able to spend it together?

Would any increased pay amount make it ok for you not to spend Christmas with your kids?

        • +1

So I suppose not everyone places the same priority on spending Christmas with family as you. The composition of our society is changing and fewer households have children. Will you deny working-class Australians the opportunity to put their hand up to work on a public holiday; to earn a bit more in order to make paying the bills easier next year? Will you deny the elderly, the visually impaired, those who are not confident enough or not old enough to drive the opportunity to travel at Christmas? Will you lobby for all air travel to be banned, all wards in hospitals to be closed and no petrol stations open and no roadside assistance available on Christmas day? The workforce involved there is much more numerous than the bus drivers you speak up for.

        • There's a big difference to essential services like hospitals and things like buses.

Also you're assuming it's optional to work.

        • The idea is that it prevents drink-drivers btw.

          Worthwhile imo.

Enjoy the freebies while you can. Public transport fares will rise from January next year.

    • +1

      January 1 in fact!

    • But the freebies are annual (since 2004/5*) and the fare rises are virtually annual too!

says the guy with a bugatti avatar :P

  • I thought this has been the norm for the last few years - nothing new!

    • Well, you never know what's gonna happen next year.

  • Surprised not free all the time, the service they provide is a third world standard at first world prices. Good on ya metro, how's about instead of investing money in poor marketing, invest in having a reliable service.

    • Disagree.

You want third world? Come to Sydney.

Melbourne transport is way better incomparison.i

      • Have you tried it? You can't get on the public transport unless you fork out $6 for myki. No concept of daily tickets here….

  • +2

Although metro may not be 100% reliable depending on the train line really, people should know the revenue from ticket sales only contributes 1/3 of total funding as the rest is funded by the state government in Victoria. We should think the fares we pay are quite reasonable compare to Sydney. Happiness is always about comparison.

    • -1

If it's anything like Translink here in Queensland, the majority of funding is probably going to pen pushing public servants.

    • Only pays 1/3 as it is run by the state, could be run much more efficient if fully privitised and conpetition was allowed.

  • Yay, free bus to the Airport. Sadly no bus out once I get to Perth.

  • +1

    Adelaide does this every year…

    • Correct.

I see the Trolls are on holidays from their day jobs and have set their sights on OZB…

    ;-)

  • good to know so as to get train in and see fireworks……

  • +1

Sweet, sick of getting ripped of by myki, anyone else had problems with them? Keep getting over charged ($9.90 per day rather than the $6.60 that's if I tag on more than twice). The ad about it being $3.30 all day travel on Saturdays and Sundays is bs as well it always charges me more…

    • Have you tried the mykileaks online analyser?

    • I've only been to Melbourne a couple of times, but it's pretty easy to sneak on and not pay, isn't it?

I know a girl who got away with it for saying she wasn't a local when caught by the inspector.

    Sure they hate Metcards…..

  • Customers who accidently validate their Metcard are not entitled to a refund, Don't worry , They are all very good customers .
