$278 with $50 off with EBay plus code PLS600

    • That’s a great price, not everyone can use that code though

  • +3

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this model quite old at this point?

    • +4

      5+ years

    • +4

The beauty of CarPlay/AA is that the head unit doesn't need to be the latest and greatest

      • +5

It’s crap that a lot of cars infosystems can’t be swapped out anymore. My 2017 car can’t be because of the cameras

        • +1

          Oops, I'll try that again.

iDatalink do the terrific Maestro product which works well with multi-camera systems in cars when fitting aftermarket head units. Have a look at Advanced ICE's website for more info.

I'm not associated with Advanced ICE, but I used to run a car electronics business and I used them as a supplier for some pretty impressive add-ons for Toyota and other vehicles.

AliExpress full android head units will be $200- $350 ish too and be 99.999% better this crap given you buy the right item for your car

Mine was like $280 after cheddar cashback, and over 2 yrs old still going strong like day 1.

    • Do you have any model suggestions at this price point?

    • +6

i've got 3 mates with android headunits from ali express and they're nothing but trouble. i put these sony headunits in our two cars and they work flawlessly

they may be old, but they start up instantly and a wife friendly

      • -2

cause they bought from a bad seller or cheaped out too much on their specs.

aliexpress is def a hit or miss platform, if good seller then items are good, and so is the experience in using them.

The only problem I had from mine is that 4G sim modem I bought for mine is NO LONGER WORKING (because of Australian government and telco mess up of 3G shutdown rendering so many 4G devices useless). But that is not a manufacturer's fault.

        • +1

The whole point of Android Auto and Apple Carplay is that you don't need to buy a "4G Sim modem" that later stops working.

These systems use the processing power that your phone already has, and the data plan that your phone already has. They're basically just dumb screens that your phone can display on - so they never become out of date.

The Android head units from AliExpress are already of date as soon as you buy them. It's only a matter of time until you can't run the latest versions of your apps because the Android version is too old.

          • +1

            @Nom:

            1. Nearly All android head units from AliExpress can be used for android auto and apple car play itself
If you dont want to use it smartly (and use your phone for everything). There's an app called Zlink for it lookup before saying wrong or half correct information.

            2. Using Android auto imo uses a lot for phone battery and heats it up a lot, compared to just using it for hotspot. So you be judge yourself as to why you or anyone else should use dumb android auto when they can use it all fully via full android experience.
Additionally android auto is 0% compatible with VPNs when using with like ALWAYS connected to VPN + BLOCK ALL CONNECTIONS WITHOUT VPN mode.

            3. 4G sim modem or whatever it optionally has, it only stops working because of Telcos or user fault (given you didn't get a faulty unit). And it still can use wifi for data (aka hotspot from phone).

            4. Yes they get old with time, just like any other phone dude, and you got that android auto/car play backup for that 5-6 yrs from now time, if Google stops support so many apps in future (even tho most android 11 devices and apps on them are totally fine). And wtf you mean by " latest versions of your apps " normal person don't use stuff like games or etc. on a car. Basic apps will be fine, browser, YouTube, yt music (or revanced equivalent), VPN, etc.
And what is to say that Google or Apple will not stop android auto/car play too ??
By your reasoning then everyone should stick to simple Bluetooth connection only ? Because that protocol won't go away soon? And a FM transmitter might be more useful than simple car play (at least will work with non apple devices)

            5. You seem to want like a Tesla level feature for Budget $200 ish that Doesn't happen LoL. If you want so much feature then pay for that level of tech.

            6. For your knowledge
The linked item also clearly says
" Please Note: Not compatible with Android Auto". So there you go the linked item is already useless for most people who are not using apple device, from day 0. And also useless to all who accidentally forget their apple device at home too, or it has 0% battery etc.

            • +2

@USER DC: or just buy a cheap sony headunit and have zero trouble :)

    • +1

      and be 99.999% better

Seems a shame they could not make the tiniest bit more effort, and be twice as good. So very close!

      • -2

You can pay more if you want that full experience

Or do work yourself, shtt doesn't come free pre installed.

If you want to get like instant on or no sleep wakeup time, you need to hire electrician to wire it to battery directly (+ sacrifice battery usage).

If you need physical buttons, dials, knobs you need to get sperate add ons for it.

If you want own better launcher you need to do work yourself to install it.

By default it is already 99% better than stock car play units.

Oh btw 100% better than this one as it has 0% compatibility with android auto, vs normal ones from China that work with both android and apple.

My folks have this model and I have the one above it.
I drove their car yesterday and for some reason my polarised glasses really dim the screen - like the polarising layer is rotated the wrong way (horizontal instead of vertical)
The AX3000 model doesn't have that problem. It's a pretty bad design flaw imo.

  • Does it have reverse camera capability?

    • yep

      • Cool thanks, do I need to buy Sony reverse camera or can I use my old Pioneer's camera? Thinking of upgrading my Pioneer headunit which is very old and doesn't support CarPlay.

  • I have honda jazz 2016 that has steering wheel controls and factory reverse camera. What things i need to make sure that this or any other unit fits and functions with everything already built in? How do i know i will fit and works without a problem?

  • FYI the screen on these is terrible. Hard to see in sunlight and polarised sunglasses make it even worse. Other than that they work fine.

    • Yeah recommend getting the model above then

      • AX3200, AX3500, and AX4000 are resistive too.
        AX5000 and up are capacitive.
I have an AX5500 and can confirm no dramas with sunlight or polarised sunnies (although ymmv)

  • -1

I don’t believe this model has capacitive touch, I could be wrong though.

Cheaper & better models to be found.

    • It's resistive yeah but hardly a dealbreaker imo

    • +1

I have this model and it’s honestly good enough for this price point. The screen responsiveness has never made me question the touch technology type.

      • +2

Yeah it's not multitouch anyway so you're only swiping

  • Ryda typically grey import?

  • +1

Not worth it unless u can install it urself. Add $300-400 for professional installation

    • +1

These are plug and play for most cars (but not all).

Generally you go to https://aerpro.com/selector and you order the correct harnesses and adaptors for your vehicle, and then just plug it all together.

There's zero skill needed unless you've got a difficult car.
