Just hit a camel alert. Seems to be an all time low, although if I remember correctly this used to be cheaper as a regular stock item at WW.

Same per ml rate at Coles for 481 ml

    • My calculations have Coles cheaper by 2c/g vs Amazon s&s price

      • I know you are frustrated @TEER3X, I would be too if I had such small upper limbs… 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

  • +11

Just not the same any more :(

After what they did to their suppliers I just buy other brands now. there's plenty more on amazon at better prices.

      • Any recommendations for replacement brands?

        • I picked up some cheap bottles for $2 that I'm not sure of the brand from the warehouse a while ago so I'm still going through them. But there's a heap on amazon that look good.

Underwood ranches is the original supplier of the chillis. They make their own sauces now. Underwood ranches sriracha

        • When I was in the US earlier this year, the Lee Kum Kee one was good, comparable to OG Huy Fong and made in the USA too. But haven’t seen it in Australia :( the search will continue though

        • +1

I've been buying 'The holy sauce' brand from Woolies and I think I prefer it from the original one from back in the day.

      • +13

The tabsco one is quite good

      • -2

Does it still taste the same. If yes it doesnt matter

      • What did they do to their supplier?

          • +3

@AtheistPeace: People always blame David Tran the original founder for going back on the handshake deal, but it was actually his daughter who married an MBA who convinced her to screw over their supplier. They always come in and make decisions to maximise profits but end up losing the soul of the company, happens every single time.

            • @SigmaSenpai78: Wait….but from what I read from the article the courts found that the supplier did actually overcharge their previous batch by 1.4 mil but in the end still sided with the supplier. Can someone explain to me why? I feel like it was the supplier at fault here….

              • +2

                @Dezza1122: https://cases.justia.com/california/court-of-appeal/2021-b30…

These are the court case notes - seems to me like Huy Fong FAFO but the supplier had been boxing clever for years before that.

                • @Big L: Thank you for providing that. It clears it up. That was a scumbag move by Huy Fong, glad they were forced to pay up.

                  • @Dezza1122: I think the farm had a sweetheart deal before Fong tried to change it without any discussion. Lousy move and poorly done - I reckon the -in-law was behind it.

      • I knew someone would comment about their suppliers before clicking on the deal

        • -2

the internet will be completely bots and we won't be able to tell

        • -1

Wow, did you really? You’re so smart!!!!! Well done! Your medal is in the post!

        • I watched a whole Youtube documentary on the dispute without having bought a single bottle before.

      • +3

        ^ This.
Hopefully Underwood Ranches (their original supplier that they screwed over) start to distribute their chillies here.

FYI I also went into a sriracha rabbit hole (look up "everything you know about sriracha is a lie" on YT, did that during covid) and have tried some chilies that have links to sriracha, such as sriraja panich and koon yick wah kee.
I'm on the lookout for Gold Medals sriracha.

    • Different chilli’s?

      • +9

Used to be grown in the USA by Underwood ranches exclusively which gave it a very consistent red colour. Something bad went down be between the two yadda yadda lawyers lawyers lawyers. There Chilli have moved to Mexico which is much more variable output. Underwood is still pumping out the same chillis it always has but under it's own brand.

@first in line: Clearly not given someone's asking lol, no need to be nasty

          • +1

@first in line: This is what you consider common knowledge? How out of touch are you. Yes I just casually follow Underwood ranch and the Three Chilli partnership because I have nothing else to do

  • +1

    Meh lost its touch

  • +7

Reminder that these are much cheaper in asian supermarkets.

  • +8

$9.80 at my local asian grocery.

    • +2

💯 Definitely under $10, and can get for under $9 if you search hard enough at different asian groceries.

      • +1

Agree, was just perusing my local Asian grocers today, and was definitely less than $10 for the bigger Huy Fong bottle.

  • If you like this, you should try Dong quan chilli source from Taiwan.

    • +1

      *sauce

  • +2

What’s the brown sauce that goes with this in PHO noodles shop? And where can I buy it?

    • +8

      Hoi sin, any asian grocery

      • +1

Can even find that in ColesWorth

        • Yeah the international aisle has been great for Colesworth.

        • it's a very common sauce, even the main stream brands have it

Colesworth has the Lee Kum Kee or Ayam brands

    • +3

Tung Chun Hoi Sin Sauce 400 g, Multicolour (Pack of 1) https://amzn.asia/d/0Ad4iK2

      • +2

I don't use this brand after using Lee kum kee

  • +2

Wow. I remember buying these for $4 a bottle from KFL supermarkets in Footscray and St. Albans before covid. Franks and Louisiana hot sauce are my go to's now from USA foods when they have their 20% off sales. With Frank's I fortify it with habanero sauce for a bit of kick. 👟

  • +4

I still prefer this over other brands, less sweetness. It's certainly changed flavour from the original, but it still has the same undellrlying taste, which I enjoy.

    • +2

Did you just make up a new word?

    • Reports are in and its still has the same taste (garlic/vinegar) , but less kick and lingering heat. I like more heat in mine. I have now switched to asian chilli oil and homemade asian green chilli sauce.

      • +1

Yep, spot on. Years ago it used to leave your tongue burning, now, it doesnt.

  • $8.80 paid at Cabramatta (Sydney, NSW) grocery store yesterday.

  • -4

You can get two for like $13 at Costco. I wouldn't recommend. 700+mg of sodium every 25ml, no thanks.

    • 375mg sodium in 25mL according to the dietary info.

      • -1

Maybe i mixed them up but the one i have is the original one and it has 730mg. The costco link, i'm not sure if it's the nutritional info for the original or hot sauce version. Has the same picture for each.

  • +4

A lot cheaper at your local Asian grocer

  • Could be similar price elsewhere, but at Cabramatta 2166 NSW, you can buy a 783g bottle for just $8.30

    • What type of shop in Cabramatta exactly?

    • Tong Li Bankstown (Bankstown Central) has it for $7.95 for the 793g

  • Whoever reported the deal as sold out/expired is wrong…….still available for me

  • seems like the new green lid don't taste like it used to - https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/fvnjjn/til_t…

then there's the shortage/supplier fight stories

apparently sriracha originated in Thailand - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huy_Fong_sriracha

Huy Fong made in California since 1980 - we loved and used it for donkeys - then a fire in the factory I heard - then the fight story I just read

not the end of the world - I ate loads of chili Across Asia on the Cheap (first Lonely Planet Yellow Bible) in 1976 - and back in Oz I got my 3 housemates up to swallowing a kg a week of Conimex Sambal Oelek - they used to spread it on sandwiches like jam.

so find a chili sauce you like - there are too many to choose from - I've gone off the sweet chili sauces although that does go well with deep-fried spring rolls … so meh

    • sriracha is a town in thailand and where the sauce originated

  • Grand Mountain Sriracha is my current favourite. Picked it up on a whim from my local Asian grocer. It's from Thailand.

  • -1

NP Grower Market, Morley - $8.49

  • At our place we refer to this as "Hot Cock" sauce.

  • For those in Vic and near a KFL location, they currently have it for 7.99 a bottle.
Hope the taste hasn't changed too much

  • Give Koon Yick Wah Kee sauce a try - I find it much more flavourful than Sriracha (which is overly sweet for my taste)

    https://www.saucemania.com.au/koon-yick-wah-kee-chilli-sauce…

You can thank me later :)

    • Koon Yick Wah Kee seems to be one of the sauces that sriracha was eventually derived from, likely to sriraja panich chilli sauce.

    • Always found this sauce to be saltier, so don't like it as much.

  • Seems like the normal price. Inflated since it was out of stock for ages (due to the chili shortage).

  • there are plenty of original Thai sauce from Asian shop at almost half price.

    • Yes and the supermarket. I tried a few when you couldn't get Huy Fong, nothing wrong with the Pantai brand (Coles or Asian supermarket).

  • that's still bloody expensive. wasn't that long ago it was $7

  • I think i bought these a couple of years ago or more for around 6-7$, has prices really changed that much recently? This is quite pricey.

    • Inflation.. and shortage. You couldn't even buy the stuff for a year or two.
btw this is the 740mL so it will be more than the smaller ones - probably ok value and would last a while.

      • The ones I bought were the 740ml size. Just surprised they are this price..sort of prices me out of the market.

        • Yeah just get another brand

    • All that extra money created for "bank bailouts" during the "pandemic" starting to slosh around the national money supply. Value of the sauce is probably the same but now more AUD are required to buy it (and everything else)
