      Only if you’re from Albany

Nah, I’m from Utica and I’ve never heard of them.

Photos show flat base - description (The heavy weight Smashed Burger Grill Press has a 1-centimeter raised edge that locks in fats, so burgers stay juicier and more flavorful.) and reviews say otherwise……

    • Yes you cannot properly smash a burger with the raised edge. Don’t buy this

      • It looks flat to me in the pictures

        • +3

look at all the review pictures - its got a big lip

          • @WillisAU: I yeah i just saw, i see what they are trying to do. smash the burger but at the same time keeping it nice and round.

    Thanks OP

    Just use your hand

Yeah I don't get this fad. When you make a patty you can make it a bit flatter/rougher, I always did it a little to form the shape. Apparently you need tools for this and the restaurants can charge more and it affects taste?

      • Idk either but my hand just clicked on buy.

Ah well I guess I have a burger press now even though i don't know how to burger.

        • Eligible for change of mind returns until Jan 31, 2025

          • @RockyRaccoon: How do those work do I just chat to Amazon?

            • @AlienC: On top right (if using via web) next to cart there is a returns and orders button. Click on that and you will see your orders. By the item you ordered there will be a selection button that says view or edit order.

Click that and you will have another option to cancel order.

Unlikely its already shipped but then you can return it after it arrives. If so then the button will only say return item. Click and follow the prompts.

You can also chat with Amazon if you cant work it out or it doesnt let you etc. Usually I have found them quite helpful

        • Onion and garlic powder, salt while cooking, maybe egg yolk in the mix. Cook hot on grill or fry pan, move to oven to heat through unless you like it thin. You can depress a spoon in the centre to capture the liquid.

When you make a patty you can make it a bit flatter/rougher, I always did it a little to form the shape

That's not making a "smash burger" though is it.
Entire idea is thin, large surface area, significant Maillard reaction etc etc

It's not just "squishing your handshaped patty down a bit"

        • Yeah I make a lot of burgers and by smashing the meat onto the griddle you get a consistent crust across the whole patty whereas with a formed patty, even if you press it into the griddle when placing it on, will have more of a mottled crust.

          • @Cheaplikethebird: I don't even have a griddle can you do smash Burgers in a fry pan.

            • @AlienC: Yeah you can do it in a cast iron pan but if you’re trying to pump out a few you’ll have to keep dumping the fat into another pan between burgers.

    • -3

Just use your third leg to press them burgers.

There is a generic $10.95 steel burger press on eBay but I guess this one might feel better

    • +1

Doubtful, the generic one is probably lighter and better fit for purpose

  • +11

Don’t buy this!!! It is not FLAT

misleading photos , can’t believe this is still not corrected

    • -1

? It looks flat to me.

      • +4

        That’s precisely the issue.

        • +2

Mine just arrived. Flat as pancake on bottom

    • +2

Next you will be telling us that the earth isn't flat eather

    • What's the issue? Raised lip? Conical curve? Convex shape?

      • The issue is it doesn't flatten your patty that well.

    • +1

I have one of these, bought from Amazon last year. It's flat on the bottom.

      Did you buy one?

  • +2

Cast iron is cast iron. So many other cast iron bbq pressers that much cheaper.

    • Or stainless steel which is superior in my opinion, unless your using the same tool to weigh down bacon

  • +2

i dont get why you would need this when you can place baking paper down then place the meat then baking paper and use the chopping board to flatten it out. Lift the meat up with baking paper onto the grill and the meat will peel off the paper and sorted….

    • +1

These can be used for more than just "smashing" a burger flat. They're useful for cooking steaks to maintain even contact across the steak with the cooking surface. But I personally just use a heavy-based pot for when I need to do that (literally just sitting the pot on top of the steak while it cooks)..

    • I like my meat round not rectangular

  • -2

Hahahahaha so many OzBargain cooking NOOBS this morning.

Get a sheet of aluminium foil and a small stainless steel pot. You can smash burgers with a damn pot that has a flat base.

Don't need a special tool for this.

  • Use your fist y'all kids.

  • I have one like this, works fine and is definitely flat unlike the one posted in this deal, according to many neg reviews

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Smasher-Hamburger-No-Rust-Griddle-…

  • It's a burger press. What's the big deal? ~$10 from Aliexpress

    • Yeah I found similar ones on ebay for $10-$12

  • I don't think cast iron is really necessary for smash burgers.

This guy is a burger scholar and he uses a stainless steel utensil https://youtu.be/KzL7Q2N6mCY?si=D2pgf7ZHRrAyJLj3&t=275

    • How does one become a burger scholar?

      • I was being a bit tongue in cheek, but I'd try doing what he did and write five books about hamburgers

        • I was a bit too. I hadn't opened the video but knew who it was going to be and have mixed feeling about him.

          • @whitlam:

            have mixed feeling about him

how come? I dunno much about him tbh

            • @beltdrive: Haven't watched any in a while but seemed a bit pretentious to me. I mean they're still just burgers. Maybe it was the scholar name that rubbed me the wrong way.

Aldi have a kit coming out with a bunch of burger stuff for 29.99 in a few days.

    • You only really need a strong spatula to do the smashing

  • Pretty sure I've seen this in the past for 9.99 on pricehipster.

  • Why are these so hard to find at Kmart/ etc.

  • Fake MSRP on Amazon See Cuisinart's US website - normal price is US$19.99.
