        Oii Oii Oii

        user name checks out

  • +11

I think this is the first time it's been half-price since price increase earlier this year.

    • +2

I was waiting for you to post and surprised no one posted.

  • Finally!! Will definitely be stocking up.

    • +4

I wouldn't stock up too much - you want it to be fresh enough when you use it. Perhaps don't buy what you won't consume within a year? I guess it depends on what you're using it for and how you're storing it too.

  • +2

Any way to store this in a warm home? I still have a full bottle. I don’t have aircon, so it’s often in the high 20s in summer

    • +10

Stable temperature is better than nothing. Bottom of a deep cupboard is insulated just from the mass of other items around it and not opening the door too often.

May sound stupid, but linen cupboard is usually cool, dry, dark and rarely opened.

You sometimes see people recommend storing in ceramic containers. Simple answer: unlike glass, metal or plastic, ceramic is a great insulator and it's usually a thick wall heavy jar.

An opened bottle has been exposed to oxygen and humidity in the air so it's already slowly deteriorating.

      • +8

Awesome, thank you. Never thought of the back of the linen cupboard.

Update: just did a test with a thermometer, 29 in the kitchen cupboard. 24 in the linen cupboard

        • +1

Yeah, the kitchen is the worst place to store olive oil bc of the heat from cooking.

    • May sounds a bit unconventional, but washroom is comparatively cooler place and you can keep a couple of these because shampoo etc..

      • +4

Washroom? Do you mean bathroom? Because when the shower or bath is being used the temperature certainly does increase and the humidity plays havoc, hence why you should never store your medicines and olive oil in a bathroom..

    • +2

      Fridge

      • +7

Olive oil changes when stored in the refrigerator. Olive oil will form crystals and start to solidify when subjected to cold temperatures. Once the olive oil is brought back to room temperature the oil will return to its liquid state.

Some research suggests that repeated heating and cooling – such as storing it in the fridge in between uses – puts stress on the oil and doesn’t necessarily extend the shelf life.

Furthermore, it is an inconvenience to bring the olive oil back to room temperature in order to use it.

Storing your olive oil in a cool dark cupboard or pantry is the way to go. Make sure that your olive oil is also tightly capped and that you buy olive oil in bottles that you will use within a few months of opening.

Note: Some people believe that you can use the refrigerator to test for olive oil authenticity. This is 100% false. There is no reliable home test to check for olive oil authenticity.

    • Next to the frozen peas

  • +12

So $50 for 3L. I guess the good old days are never coming back. :(

    • +4

      Black market still alive.

      • What does this entail? just out of curiosity, so one can avoid such a market

    • +10

      Used to be $10/litre.

      So $7.50/750ml.

      Now $12.50/750ml. Hmm.

What's going on with inflation, Australia?

      • +6

Ask the banks and the government. Hundreds of billions of dollars created this decade for bank bailouts (if memory serves) while people's attention was elsewhere.

        • +9

Tons of money was printed during covid, and too much of it was given to the already-rich like Gerry Harvey without any strings or requirement to pay it back later.

I don't mind printing money to help people out in an emergency, but right wing leaders at the time such as Morrison, Trump, and Boris made sure that the high end of town was enriched from it, and it's only worsened the wealth divide and inflation of prices as it turns out to be more profitable to just price to the high end of town.

          • @CodeExplode: While everything you said is true, most people don't realise that the majority of inflation is 'printed' by banks giving out loans, not government giving out payments. The low interest rates during COVID encouraged Trillions of dollars in new loans to be taken out, at least 10x more money entered circulation via loans than via government payments.

With this understanding, you should realise that the continuous blame of 'money printing' is a narrative promoted by the wealthy asset owners to distract and convince the pleb voters to cut government- and therefore taxes and regulations- which would benefit the wealthy and hurt the poor disproportionately. Just look at the politicians that mention 'money printing' as the most important issue - it's always the ones in the pockets of billionaires

            • @greatlamp:

While everything you said is true, most people don't realise that the majority of inflation is 'printed' by banks

Lot of bankers dont know that as well?

              • @BuyOrNot: A loan brings forward future earnings to be spent in the present. An increase in loans issued is generally viewed as pro-inflationary, being a sign of increasing economic activity. A banker would certainly understand that.

        • +3

ask the farmers. Olive oil pricing is purely a supply driven issue not a demand driven issue

      • Australia, New Zealand, Canada, US, UK, Europe, Latin America… where is inflation not going through the roof? It's the covid tax, which in turn is the GFC tax.

        • +2

Uzebekistan, Kazakhstan, they didn't have much impact from inflation.

Seems like a Western issue / international plan lol

          • +1

@movieman: Yup western nations printed money like crazy during COVID.i am still surprised inflation is so low compared to the amount of money printed

            • +1

@onegpt: Not for long. Fasten your seatbelts for 2025; the USD will implode, and with it the currencies of all US Western vassal states, controlled demolition style, in push to replace it all with CBDCs.

            • @onegpt: Most of it goes in some kind of asset like the stock market or BTC or Gold

          • @movieman: Uzbekistan's inflation is 10.2% now but was 12.2% early last year (for comparison, Australia's is 2.8% now, and never passed 8% in the last 30 years). Kazakhstan's inflation is at 8.4% now, and was 21.3% early last year. They're still impacted, even if the US is not a significant client, bc EU is.

            • @wisdomtooth: We were there last year, and prices were in line with guidebooks from previous years.

Plus items at restaurants / tours / cultural events were all matching their previous online prices.

In other areas (Europe, Australia, etc) the pricing was usually updated due to their increases, but as a tourist it was pleasantly surprising to see that Uzebekistan and Kazakhstan maintained prices (at least on a tourist level).

      • +1

It’s artificial inflation created to maximize profits in short period of time.
It is criminal but govt is just keeping its eyes shut as usual.

    • I recently read olive oil is coming down in price in Europe, so we can only hope Australia will follow!

  • +4

It used to be $15 full price not too long ago?

I just noticed i need more. Usually get the Aldi tin. Is this better value?

  • +1

Finished the last bottle a few months ago and have been surviving on Aldi The Olive Tree since then. Time to stock up now. Thanks OP.

  • +6

The 3L is often $55 on amazon. So it's barely half price oil. Just the smaller bottle if thats your thing i guess.

  • CHOICE : How To Pick The Best Olive Oil
    https://www.choice.com.au/food-and-drink/nuts-and-oils/oils/… (30 NOV 2021)

  • I did say this earlier in a thread about Olive oil, wait as the prices a temporarily elevated due to supply issues. I knew the prices would start to come down and this is a good sign.

  • time to oil up them buns in time for summer.

    Some olive news

    https://www.euronews.com/business/2024/11/18/olive-oil-price…

Spainsh, Italian, Turkish, Greek olive oil production to recover from past years drought. Spain was hard hit with drought conditions. Olive oil price was increased temporarily due to unfavourable global weather.

Its good that Australia produces its own olive oil for mass consumption. We dont need to rely too much from European suppliers.

I just buy mine from aldi. Its always sale price compared to colsworth.

  • +10

I can't believe how expensive this has become!

  • -1

Too expansive for daddy, I mean diddi

  • +2

Is $16.67/L about as good as it gets for quality olive oil? (in the current supply settings)

Is it possible to get something like a Red Island somewhere between $10-$15/L, whether it's 1L or 3L?

    • +4

Costco has 4L of red island for 60$

      • … if you can consume 4L OO in a couple of months…

  • +1

Isnt it cheaper at Aldi without a sale?

    • some people prefer colbram… i use both.

Aldi and Colbram normal stuff are on par, the Colbram premium stuff is quite good though. Delicious on ice cream with salt.

      • +1

ALDI for cooking; Cobram for salad and cold dishes.

      • +7

Wait, wat?! On ice cream?? 😳

        • Yes look up Dua Lipa ice cream video.

I will prefer Monini. I think Italian OL has more favour than local.

    • +1

Go check where the Monini olives come from

      • +1

Says "product of Italy" on Woolworths' page. Don't understand this thread.

        • +3

If you started up a blended olive oil company in the EU it would impossible to stop adulterated oil entering your supply system.

  • +1

I wouldn't be surprised if they're on Special next week at Woolies.

  • +1

Don't stock up, global olive oil prices are set to drop massively.

    • +8

Will be very happy to be proven wrong but why would supermarkets here be bothered to drop the price? Yes I'm that cynical

      • +1

Per this thread people are waiting several months for a deal to buy more olive oil.

      • 300+ positives on this deal…this is likely the new floor price

  • -2

Saw the cheapest olive oil at coles is now $1.59/100ml. I bought the grapeseed oil which is $1.60/100ml instead.

    • 🤢

    • +1

All grapeseed oil sold at Coles is refined. While this is an extra virgin olive oil. This is more expensive to produce and better for your health.

    • Grapeseed oil is trash, no better than cheap vegetable oil. It's like angus beef, a tarted up image to sell a cheap product at a premium price.

  • any coles gift cards ? thanks

    • +1

@anna tucker The best rate at the moment is Coles gift card $50 at 3% cashback on ShopBack app.

On Wed at Woolworths, another option is the $500 Vanilla gift card for $25 worth of EDR points. You can use the gift card at Coles and other places. There are reports of the Vanilla card being hacked so you would want to spend the amount quickly.

  • The real Black friday deal!

  • +1

is the light version that light? i mean its oil!
