Electric Kettle with Water Not Exposed to Plastic

Hi guys, I want to buy a new electric kettle, but one where the water is not exposed to plastic.

Has anyone found one of these recently? Not interested in stove top kettle.

Just purchased a stainless steel Breville kettle (BKE425BSS) from Amazon but water is fully exposed to the plastic water level window.

Thanks.

Search for 'glass kettle'. Read through the features to make sure you get thermal shock resistant (borosilicate). That glass is designed not to shatter if the kettleboils dry and you top up straight away).

Glass kettles are the closest I have found. The spout is made of plastic.

Currently using a double walled, but I think the body is made of plastic, not glass.

I’ve got a double wall that has glass interior, plastic exterior with a stainless spout. The spout filter is stainless with a plastic frame but I removed that and now water doesn’t contact any plastic.

        • Thanks. I'll do the same.

    • I have always had trouble with glass kettles cracking…

So, I switched to a portable induction cooker and one of those kettles that usually goes on top of a gas stove. The only issue is I can't really control how long it boils.

Are there any good recommendations for a glass kettle? Sometimes I am boiling 3-4 times in quick succession when making soups, so I am worried about the glass contracting and expanding.

      • What glass kettles have you used?

I've never had one crack, even though I refill with cold tap water multiple times in quick succession.

I've always noted the brand Schott is printed on the glass on kettles and cooktops

        • I had a Breville one that was quite good but it was subject to a recall due to safety issues. After that incident, I remember I tried many other generics including those from kmart and spotlight, which was roughly 10 years ago. Those were not as robust and had a tendency to randomly crack.

It was the early days for glass kettles and it is possible the quality has improved since.

          • @Dennis Denuto: I've had my Breville for 7 years now.

Hopefully will last another 7, if not more.

Previously had a no-brand glass one. Glass on it when the electronics died

    • So have you found any glass kettles where water does not touch plastic?

    Concerned about micro plastics?

Have a look at this comment, thanks to @stingydonkey from previous thread.
I bought two of them, it is still being sold, and I am very happy with them. But note: you have to look inside for water level indicator when filling. Also quite good value for money, considering the equivalent one from KitchenAid, which I found during searching was 3-4 times more. @stingydonkey also kindly shared a video of the inside of the kettle.

      Thanks, that looks good.

Bought the same, due to the same comment too. Very happy, boils quick and filling level seemed a problem until I realised I usually refill before boiling anyway, and the holes in the spout line up when glancing quickly as I do so.

the holes in the spout line up

Great observation, thank you! Was always looking at the level marker - this is much easier :-)

        • +1

yeah drove me crazy at first because it's marked on the wrong side to the hand I use too

          • +1

@Bing0: Exactly! Was wondering why they didn't mark it on both sides. Now we know. They probably thought most people would be observant (like yourself) to notice eventually, that it pretty much lines up with lowest hole in spout. Unfortunately, someone like me is just unobservant … and continue to crane my neck to look at the level marker! :-)

  • i just looked inside my delognhi kettle - its all metal except the little filter holder and filter frame at the top of the kettle shich you could remove if you wanted to.

    • How about the water window? I presume that is plastic and water is in contact with that? If this is not the case can you let me know which delonghi kettle it is?

[spooky music] The plastic is already inside the water! We are all DOOMED.

A lot of the pipes that bring the water to your house are plastic, including the house plumbing, if built in the last 25 yrs or so.

You can blame copper thieves for that.

  • So has anyone found a glass kettles where water does not touch plastic?

    • My Breville possibly has a tiny bit around the metal pipe that runs up from the bottom, but I can't see it. Otherwise, in the inside around the hinge at the top is a plastic structure that is exposed to steam inside the kettle. https://www.breville.com/en-au/product/bke750
The only way you'll have any chance of discovering one with none is to walk into a few stores, start looking and thinking about leak sealing as you look.

    • No, have you?

Suffice to say the kettle is the end of the waters journey, so ensuring that last tiny portion is 100% plastic free will overall achieve how much I'm not sure - especially when you take into account all the other ways microplastics have to get into you via the food supply system etc.

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. :-)
