it wouldn't be an ebay sale without some nice pricing on used/refurb laptops, and this x280 seems like it offers a significant amount for the money in a compact package.

not sure about the battery health, would be nice to hear from rep @untech. and do note this laptop is bios locked (more details below), so this isn't suitable for those who want to install linux, enable virtualisation, swap fn/ctrl, etc. for my partner's mum and people like her though, who do some ms office work and netflix watching, this is perfect.

  • Need to know about battery health

bios locked, might be annoying if you want to reinstall clean windows

    • i may be wrong but i believe you should still be able to reinstall windows using the 'reset this pc' feature in windows itself. but booting from a usb could be a challenge if the bios only allows the ssd as a boot option.

    • Where did you find the bios locked info? I can't find it on the item listing at all (mobile browser)

Pretty scummy if they didn't note that

        Condition: Used
“Good working and cosmetic condition, bios locked.”

    • F12 then choose boot device. But regardless its annoying if you want to fix other settings.

Most of the time the reason companies lock their BIOS is to prevent anyone from booting the computer from a different device.

does bios locked.. mean you can't upgrade anything..!! or fix anything on it??
    or even replace the battery..?

    • i dont think replacing the battery should be a problem. could be wrong though.

  • Can't you reset the bios password by disconnecting the CMOS battery? Or is that only for old school computers?

    • unfortunately i don't believe that works on newer thinkpads (incl. x280).

    • Nope. It holds the password regardless.

Thank you for letting me know about the lock
I didn't notice it when I first read the deal and was going to buy it

    I think I will pass

I see what you did there

never removed a bios lock or had to deal with one - wouldnt it be easier for untech to do this and absorb or charge more?

    thanks
For a kids first school laptop this seems more than suitable

  • Cab boot order be changed with bios locked?

Is bios fully locked out or is it for supervisory/security functions?

    • you may be able to access the boot menu via f12 but i believe whether that'll work will vary on a per-laptop basis.

the bios itself is fully locked for as long as there is an svp.

If the BIOS is locked you have no way of removing any UEFI malware…

    • i'm not so sure that this is true. as far as i can tell, you can still reflash a clean bios as per instructions in post, even if there is a supervisor password. doing that does not itself remove the lock (added step of patching the bios needed). it's not a trivial process, but it's possible.

  • Does this have a touch screen?

  • any warranty ?
