  • I am on the hunt for a 4080 setup and I'm tempted but haven't considered a laptop before but…Is the laptop 4080 actually that much slower than the desktop version (-35%)?

all laptop GPUs are slower than their desktop counterpart. Its a simple case of the desktop part having far greater power and cooling allotments (combined with dodgy marketing departments)

Yep, i learnt this with my first gaming laptop Aliewanre Area 51 with the RTX2080.. OMG never again!!! Thermal Throttling beast!

      • +2

It's not. In previous generations what you said held true but gtx4000 laptop chips are inferior to desktop chips. 4080 laptop is the 4070 desktop chip ad104, not the 4080 desktop chip ad103.
Coupled with the power and thermal limits, you can expect performance somewhere around the 4060ti level from the 4080 laptop.
The 2080 in the alienware laptop was an actual 2080 chip, just with lower power and thermal budget.

I did imply dodgy marketing departments as well. I figured OP didn't need the whole picture

        • Strangely except the 4060, the terrible desktop GPU actually is pretty decent in a laptop as it runs almost the same. Which is making the RTX 4070 in laptops look like an even worse choice, even though I got one in my own laptop.

    • I learnt this lesson the hard way also. I had a 3060 laptop GPU. It was really only equivalent to 1070 desktop GPU. To get it to perform best, it sounded like a airplane taking off too. Even then it constantly throttled.

Yeah can be a bit misleading, completely different chips. The 4080 desktop GPU is 37% faster than 4080 laptop GPU in a 23 game average at 1440p - assuming a full powered laptop 4080, because if you get a lower powered 4080 in a thinner laptop then the gap will be even larger.

I compared (almost) all laptop & desktop GPUs in 20+ games at 3 resolutions here if you want to see where everything fits in: https://jarrods.tech/laptop-desktop-graphics-comparison/

gaming laptops had their case when desktop GPUs were super expensive. oh wait.

  • Good on HP, other brands should follow and also dropping their 4080 laptop prices too, e.g. bloody Legion 9i still like more than double of this!

  • +1

tempting but gonna hold out til 50 series comes in Q1 2025

    • Yeah if a 5070 laptop performs like a 4080 laptop while being more efficient, I'm in.

    • Except a new 5080 laptop won't cost anywhere near this price

  • Would this be taking a gamble on the processor?
I see a lot of mixed information, as to whether the processor may be a rebadged 12th gen (Alder Lake) or a potentially problematic Raptor Lake version

    • +2

The mobile processors have no where near the issues the desktop ones had/have. I have the 13900hx/4090 version of this laptop - no issues at all.

I bought this model last month, it's perfect for my needs. I added a second NVME drive and upgraded the memory to 96GB (despite HP saying 64GB is the maximum).

    • How's the build quality? I guess most exterior are still plastic, right?

      • It's fine. I came from an Alienware 18, then a Dell G17 and this is just the same really.

    • Did you buy 2 new 32GB sticks or some other configuration?

  • Hey, I need help choosing between these two laptops. One is this one, and the other is a Lenovo 5i with an Intel i9 and RTX4070 graphics card. Which one do you think is better?

  • +2

    Cheers. Bought 1 for "work".

I've got a 4090 version of the this laptop and I love it.

I like the fact that your tax invoice makes no mention of the eBay discount. Very handy for the tax return.

    • What's the price in the invoice please? The full $5,699?
