1000M would be an overkill for most NBN already lol

  • i'm still running nokia fastmile wifi 5, 5g

    I'm sorry.

But you would have to be a (profanity) idiot to buy these gimmicks

Your mainly paying money to get "GAMER" l33t features.

Modems that cost 200 bucks offer the same or better perfomance..

or you would spend 500 bucks and get AP points in every room

    These "BANDWIDTH" numbers are pointless..

if your gaming you aren't using more than 3-5mbit of downloads and even less up..

Netflix will only need about 40Mb of speeds to max out a 4k stream..

If you need 10Gbit network, you are buying a MikRoTik and setting up a home network.

There is one use case for lots of bandwidth wifi: regularly moving large files and no ability for Ethernet e.g a rental property.

      • +4

You can spend that $1200 and buy unifi gear instead with multiple access points, which will give you better throughput if you have a big house.

        • +1

You want me to spend $1200 to route cables throughout a rental property? Yea no, XT8 is a better option.

    • +6

      Asus UI is top notch.

I agree, the throughput looks good on paper but in reality my experience with even wifi6 5ghz 4x4 is speeds drop off exponentially with distance and line of sight, I doubt it's much different with wifi6e or wifi6.

Something like a $1300 unit is an over capitalisation unit and you would be better off getting a mesh system or running a cable between 2 units.

In my example, I had the ax88u by the nbn point on the opposite side of the house from my home office, I simply could not get it to negotiate wifi6 instead of wifi5 with any 2x2 wifi6 devices (Intel ax210 with high gain antenna). I had to move the router one room closer (approximately 4m closer and 1 less wall, it now sits almost central in a pretty average 3 bedroom house).

    • i mean its pretty great for country like Japan or China which they have over 2000mbps family network, and btw cost about the same at our 100mbps nbn, but u are right i cannot really see the point of buying this in Australia

    • "you're"

    • But you would have to be a (profanity) idiot to buy these gimmicks

      But it’s ROG. 😂

Thanks, bought one for Cocomelon streaming

    • Lmao!!! Geez i needed that laugh. Thanks mate

$1200+ for a router!! But why? You can get a whole PC for that :O…

    • +1

Some people have more dollars than sense. Marketing is such a wonderful thing.

      • +1

If WiFi 7 was priced cheaper, then the WiFi 6 or 6e may not move off the shelf as quickly.

So, it's about moving stock and inventory, while they make their sales (read: profit).

I mean, a lot of inventions / things were already known to be possible, but the approval/marketing process is drawn out, to maintain "life cycles" of a technology for money reasons.

  • +4

    That's one expensive crab.

  • +11

12 upvotes so far, I doubt any of these have purchased.

This is a ridiculous price for a wifi router

  • -8

Poor people, having broken NBN and slow internet speed, then mock a world class router and who bought them

    • +8

This isn't that. Even with gigabit, this is just a poor choice. You could get much better performance with just about any gigabit router + a few wifi APs. Even better if you can run cable with a gigabit switch or two. If you can't and still need the coverage, a good mesh system. This is like buying a single super-duper stupidly expensive computerised water sprinkler to do both your front and back lawns at the same time. I'm sure if you spend enough money you'll find an option to do that, doesn't mean it's the most effective way to do it.

This just screams of targeting people who are too technically illiterate to know any better.

      • borrowing this sprinkler analogy, thank you

      • If you can’t run Ethernet backhaul and have a large house, would you suggest wireless backhaul mesh instead of a single router with the best transmission strength you can afford ?

        • Yes, but mesh is also a compromise itself. Better coverage, lower maximum bandwidth, higher latency (might not be noticeable depending on hardware and use case).

If you can't run ethernet, maybe consider ethernet-over-power adaptors too. Not perfect, but could be an option to give a hardwired link between a router and other wireless access points. Watch for the advertising oh those though, make sure they actually have a gigabit port. Many will advertise 500mbps, but that might just be the speed over the power line with a 100mbps port at the end.

What a ridiculous comment. This is objectively overkill and overpriced.

  • +4

These might have made more sense if Australia wasn't duped into maintaining Turnbull's copper protection racket

    • -1

You can upgrade to FTTP free of charge pretty much everywhere that didnt already have it?

      • +1

Not true, many FTTN suburbs still can't upgrade and then there's all the FTTB unit blocks. You have high density people stuck on FTTB with no upgrade path to FTTP…

        • I cant even get any of those HFC only.

    • Even if you're able to saturate the bandwidth using home SSD+RAID NAS to other devices, this is just ridiculously overpriced for what it is.

  • This is not in the true Ozbargin spirit. Purely advertising

    • According to 3Camels it’s a significant price drop to an ATL, and user is not associated with a strong post history. What makes you think they’re advertising?

      • -1

Nearly every item on camel has price fluctuations…. Doesn’t mean they are bargains

      • +1

Yes,…I'm not associated with ASUS nor Amazon.

I just saw the price drop on 3xCamel and since I have soft spot for ROG routers, thought I'd post it.

I got the GT-AX11000 when it first came out, priced at $700+ , but with gift cards and coupons, paid about $350+ at that time.
