Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 Gaming Laptop (i9-14900HX, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 4070) $1998 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman

440

One of the cheapest RTX 4070 gaming laptops I've ever seen locally, especially considering Acer's Predator models are usually priced higher than alternatives here.

It was ~$2400 a few weeks back, then lowered to $2198 about a week ago, now this morning it's down to $1998

Specs:
- CPU: Intel Core i9-14900HX
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 8GB
- RAM: 32GB DDR5
- Screen: 16" 2560 x 1600 240Hz
- SSD: 1TB

The only cheaper 4070 I'm aware of at the moment is the $1899 Gigabyte Aorus 16X at Umart: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/878498 but that has a worse CPU and half the RAM.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2024

  • Congrats on first post Jarrod.
Looks like you forgot to put the store in the title.

      Fixed thanks, babies 1st OZB.

      • Expired, back up to $2500

        • +1

Still shows $1998 for me even with a fresh browser no cache?

          • @JarrodsTech: Oh weird, showing same for me now, thanks for replying

I read the Legion 5 has better Linux compatibility your mid range comparison between this and the Legion 5
Could you point me in the direction to learn more about issues/draw backs this might have running Linux?

            • +1

@ozilicious: I only do pretty basic testing with an Ubuntu live CD. Copy paste from my video comparing the two:

The Legion’s Linux support is a little better. Both laptops had a working keyboard, touchpad, camera, speakers, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Keyboard shortcuts on both for changing volume, adjusting screen brightness and keyboard brightness worked, but the Helios’s keyboard was stuck to blue lighting, whereas you can still cycle through the different profiles on the Legion. The Legion’s performance mode change shortcut also still works, while the Helios’s extra button above the keyboard on the left does not.

        • Nope, still $1998 for me too, but hope Zephyrus will drop to this price in the future …

  • Busy day for you Jarrod at https://gaminglaptop.deals/australia/
Your YouTube channel has been really helpful. Thanks mate.
In the past, have you noticed laptop deals are better during black friday sales in oz?

    • +3

Cheers, I can't really say because this is the first year we've run the Australia page, so I don't have any historical data (but will for next year).

      • Looking forward to that follow up video next year haha. Keep up the great work.

  • Was eyeing this up this morning, still hesitant to pull the trigger

    • +3

The main thing that'd hold me back personally is it was the heaviest 16" gaming laptop we reviewed all year - I prefer portability, but I guess thinner options also cost more.

      • I m sure the Helios build quality better than their Nitro?

        • 100%

    Hey nice, welcome to Ozbargain

You're channel really helped me buy a gaming laptop last year. Appreciate the work you do, and good luck with the new Australian deals page.

    • +1

      Thanks! Glad I could help

  • 5kg is that right??

    • nope, our website for some reason shows the weight incl all packaging/charger. real weight is 2.64kg

      • That's the exact weight I got myself, goes up to 3.84kg when you include the charger + power cable though.

        • not sure where head office whipped out 5kg from, it says 5kg in my pos system too, strange…

    • Think they've copied the lbs spec by mistake

  • good specs for the price but I'll never buy an acer product ever again.

    • Mind to tell us your nightmare?

      • pretty simple, have owned a couple of Acer laptops in the past that have died a year or two after. Also wouldn't buy a Toshiba laptop either as I had one of those die not long after warranty expired.

        • My Toshiba Satellite from 2002 is still working fine.

    • +1

$2k laptop should last reasonably long under ACL

      • Warranty only lasts for a year in Australia. I've got a Razer laptop that I paid 3k for where the screen died after a year and a half and Razer wanted $100 just to look at it to see what was wrong with it. I found a youtube video on how to replace the screen and did it myself though.

        • +1

acer are pretty reasonable, seen plenty of credits approved for major failures.

  • How does this compare with the gigabyte in regards to build quality
    https://www.umart.com.au/product/gigabyte-aorus-16x-16in-wqx…

    • +1

Pretty similar I'd say, maybe bit of an edge to the Helios. Helios is 13% heavier though.

      • I'll have this docked to my ultra wide so weight isn't super important but I do want it to last well

Big fan of these. Have used a few for work, and have one personally. Got it around the 2.1k price, so under 2k is a steal. Yeah, they're a touch heavy, but they feel sturdy and well made. Perform great, and have noticed no heating issues despite high intensity multi-tasking. At this price point it's a little hard to find fault with them

Oh geez purchased this on Friday for $2198! Asked them then if thats the best price they can give.Wouldnt give a $10 discount as originally they mistakenly gave me the 13000 series .
Great news, just rang them and went back to the store, they gave me the $200 refund.

    • Oh nice!

      • Thanks Jarrod,if you hadnt put this discount up woulnt have known! So far it is a great laptop, much better than my old Acer i5 RTX 3060.

        • Is the whole chassis in metal not plastic?

I was about to buy Metabox Prime-16 for $2,599 - I was reluctantly over my budget of $2,500 so my customisation didn't include Windows. Than I watched Jarrod'sTech laptop deals video showing the Helios laptop with exact same specs for $600 cheaper, with windows, better battery, faster RAM, 240Hz screen, I almost spat out my tea, if I drank tea. If your listening Jarrod, please do more Metabox laptop reviews. I bought 3 x Metabox laptops for my workplace awhile back after watching them.

    Metabox Prime-16 $2,599
    Intel Core i9-14900HX 24-Core CPU
    NVIDIA RTX 4070 8GB GDDR6 140W
Built-in Ultra Sharp 2.0 MP FHD Camera
    16.0" 3K Matte 165Hz LED 500 Nits
    32GB DDR5 4800MHZ (2 x 16GB)
    1TB - PCIe 4.0 - Metabox NVMe M.2 SSD
Intel AX211 AX Tri Band WIFI/BT

    Acer Predator Helios Advantages:
    ✅ $601 cheaper
    ✅ Higher refresh (240Hz vs 165Hz)
    ✅ Faster RAM (5600 vs 4800MHz)
    ✅ Larger battery (90Wh vs 73Wh)

    Metabox Prime-16 Advantages:
✅ Lighter (2.45kg vs 2.8kg), Smaller (by a tiny bit)
    ✅ Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4
✅ Possibly a more premium build quality?

    • Hey so I actually started the channel with Metabox reviews haha. Everyone at my job used them and that's how I got access to a machine to make my first video almost 10 years ago now.

Unfortunately these days only 3% of viewers come from Australia, so it just doesn't make sense to go through the 1-2 week process to produce the video.

      • +1

Interesting Metabox is part of the channel origin story! Off topic, as part of my research into what laptop to get, I scraped the entire content of https://gaminglaptop.deals/ and pasted it into "claude-3.5-sonnet" (similar to ChatGPT but better) along with laptop deals from other websites, Metabox, Harvey Norman, PCCG, etc. and asked it to find the best deal. It consistently chose the Helios Neo 16 and kept persuading me that it was the best deal, by providing detailed analysis and comparisons. I highly recommend you look at implementing AI chat on the gaminglaptop.deals with a web scraper feeding it regular updated data from multiple websites/sources. If you think its a good idea, I'd be happy to assist.

  • Thank you Jarrod.

  • Are there any cashbacks with Harvey Norman?

  • Has anyone spotted any good laptop deals around the ~$1200-1500 mark? Hoping to land in the RTX4000's (60+ preferable), the Lenovo LOQ's are quite good deals but I need 2 USB ports :(

    • +1

      USB C I assume? As the LOQ has 3x Type-A and 1x Type-C

Also assuming the original LOQ, the new "Essential" model has 1 less Type-A.

      • Sorry my mistake, must of been tired last night 😂 didn't realise they are at the back of the laptop, thanks! I swear I read one of them only had 1 type A, must of misread

  • Hi Jarrod

I bought this yesterday and just received an email that my order is delayed (says backorder). Hopefully they won't cancel.

Just FYI for those still thinking of ordering 🙂

    • I ordered this too, Harvey Norman called to say they could give me the display model straight away, or wait over a week. I like my laptops new and untouched, so I guess I'll wait.
