  • Is this same as 5L version? (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/153871891278?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…?)

No information is provided on eBay page whether it is full synthetic or something else.

    • The 5L you linked is 5W-30 A3/B4, whereas the one in the deal is for the 5W-30 LL

Both appears to be Full Synthetic.

LL just stands for long life. To compare using ACEA specs the 20l drum is C3 vs A3/B4.

    • -3

      Cheaper on Amazon.

      • I'll bite🐊…..
That one is 5W-40 oil and $199.68 for 20L

          • @jv: 😕

Oil keeps, so you can store the other 15L (at $32.50 for 5L from Sparesbox) for future services.
Or sell the remaining 15 litres to your mates for $35-$40/ 5L

            • @alidli:

so you can store the other 15L

I'd rather invest the savings elsewhere than in something that will sit around my garage for 2-3 years. 5L is plenty for me.

              • @jv:

I'd rather invest the savings elsewhere….

                AutoBarn $29.99 (5W-30, full synth, 5L)

                Thank me later.

Thats a good deal to be fair but to comapre that oil to the LL oil of this deal is like chalk and cheese. Basically the LL oil has some of the hardest to obtain gradings/ratings in the oil game, it's absolute top shelf and could be used in early every car barring very special needs very happily.

                  • @Daniel Plainview: I know, but doubt jv cares if it's LL or services her car.
Just playing the game with her till one of us gets fed up 💅

              • @jv: Nothing happens for 10 years, its nature's oil. If it was my car's oil then I would have ordered 5 20L drums.

                • @SYLTB: I'm using a 10+ yrs Toyota 0W-20 oil & check-up on used oil condition monthly.

I wonder why the internet is full of posts saying oil go-off after 5 yrs, paid reviews ?

                  • @ab c: Some paid but not all I guess. I think there are some additives in the oil they refer to them for 5 yrs, but oil still good for at least 10 years. Our farm tractors' oil be in the 200 L barrel we used to top up it and would never be less than half full. I remember so at least 20 years or so.

              • @jv: Do you only service your car every 2-3 years?

            • @alidli:

Or sell the remaining 15 litres to your mates for $35-$40/ 5L

I don't have an oil permit to sell oil.

              • @jv: that's ok- easy work around, I'll PERMIT you to sell the oil can for $35, the oil inside it is free.

      • Different oil spec (A3/B4)
Edit: No stock options for LL spec.

    • The LL can be used in place and is better. It is the official oil for VW concern cars

  • Damn this is not 505.01, but excellent oil for 504/507 VAGs. Btw, Sparesbox had improved its shipping significantly this year. They ship same/one day.

    Thanks OP!
I nearly ordered at $199.95 on their website yesterday, huge saving!

  • Great OP.! good for track days

  • How do we get them out of the drum? Any extra equipment needed?

    • You can just pour it by unscrewing cap on top and tilting the drum. It is not that big or heavy. (3.5 oil changes for me) But can get a little messy. If you mind you can use a pump. Electric or hand.

      • Thanks - I need 8 Litter or 6 Litter Each Change - Better keep the old 6 Litter Bottle from now on.

        • Definitely keep the bottle. Wouldn't want to pour it into the car from the drum :-D What I was describing is filling up the 5L bottle :-D

      • You can just pour it by unscrewing cap on top and tilting the drum….

And use a very wide funnel into the receiving container, and if you're pouring it into a tall plastic 5L can make sure that it's wedged upright as they are easy to knock over until they are quarter full with the new oil; saves you spilling it all onto the garage floor (talking from experience!)

      • Leave some plastic on the container-edge for structure-support, https://www.instructables.com/Oil-Drain-Pan-Free/

Works out to be $32.50 p/5l.

    Not good, not bad.

FWIW and I'm happy to be told I'm wrong but you'll find that this C3 diesel vehicle oil will be more than suitable to use in the vast majority of petrol cars that are good with a 5W-30 oil.

Gross oversimplification but diesel oils tend to have more detergents/cleansers and can be used with no issues in petrols - whereas the opposite is NOT true (petrol intended oils in diesels, especially those with DPFs).

The VW/BMW LL grade is one of the highest ones out there and very hard to get - which means this oil is absolute top shelf quality in all regards. If I didn't have ~30L already in my garage (as we have a C3 needing vehicle ourselves) I'd nab atleast one myself.

FWIW also these big 20L tubs are a tad hard to use but you decant into 5L or 6L containers, is not that hard after the first service is done. Terrific deal IMHO.

PS. Talked myself into buying one anyway - make that 50L of oil in garage!

    • Yeah, this oil is not diesel specific. It is just that Euro diesels with DPF are a bit more sensitive so this oil is good for them.

    • It seems you intend to use this C3 oil in petrol engine: NOT-diesel.

Maybe the answer depends on YOUR,
1.inspection of used oil on dipstick & engine behavior as it approaches the plan oil change interval,
      2.oil change interval,
3.use, eg spirited driving all the time,
4.trust in Castrol brand & all its claim certifications, including 'LL' &
      5.other criteria, not mentioned

I've tested C3 oil in my petrol engine, & maybe I know what to look for 🤔

I use C3 in the Pajero Sport diesel, the Accord Euro and the 1.8tsi Golf (both petrol). 5w-40 for summer, 5w-30 for winter.
32L on the shelf at the moment.

I wish they all had the same oil filter. Just bought 6 for the PS for $45
