  • This or the 10w30 gulf western synth for $25 at supercheap?

Also… what happens if you mix a bit of 5w30 with 10w30 or vice versa?

    • ¿Porque no los dos?

    • +5

      Depends if you need 5W.
In Aussie summers theres probably no harm in a 10W in most vehicles, but if you have to ask, best to stick to your manuals recommendations.

No harm in mixing. You risk making the additive packages less effective, but base oils will still be compatible.

      • Manual says it pretty much takes everything… both 5w30 and 10w30 are well within spec

        • +6

10w30 will have less long chain polymers making it stable for longer drain intervals. (Less chance of shearing shorter chains).

5w will flow faster when cold, which might prevent more wear at startup.

So depends on how often you service imo.

      Gulf western is semi synthetic

      • much effective difference between full synth and semi ?

    • +2

      $25 at Supercheap.

At the end of the day, in Australia (especially Sydney) it's fine.

    • Once mixed you get 7.5w30

  • +8

Nulon APEX+ 5W-30 is the same price with a better API rating (SP vs SN) and also a ILSAC GF-6A rating.

    • I was about to ask what the difference was between these. Confusing!

These oil companies are starting to sound like pain killer companies with the amount of different “variants” they release.

Next minute there will be a specific oil that targets only the even cylinders in your engine.

I really wonder how much difference there is between all of the different “ranges”.

    • +1

Just search up your vehicle on their website and it will tell you which oils are compatible.

I really wonder how much difference there is between all of the different “ranges”.

If you really do, you can send away for VOA (virgin oil analysis) to quite a few labs in Australia.
Its the one oil-nerd level above just sending away UOA (Used Oil) to know if you're using the right oil for your specific engine.

    • Agreed. Mines a Ford using E10 yet Autobarn and Nulon website says
      Does Not Fit Your Vehicle

I really wonder how much difference there is between all of the different “ranges”

For the many OzBargainers who change engine oil every 6 months & don't stress your oil…ENTRY-level oil from a PREMIUM-brand is good enough, eg X-pro by Nulon.

Stress includes towing, spirited-driving, higher powered engine (say 200kW +), lots of highway driving, longer oil change interval, lots of COLD morning start (say below 5°C) etc etc.

DYI owners will tell you that there IS a difference & willing to pay a few $ more, lol.

For the Gulf Western Oil fans $20, pls research suitability, https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/gulf-western-gulf-wester…

    Suitable for 22B?

    • Yeh but better get nulon apex+ for the same money but better overall oil

    • +3

If its the original EJ in there? No.
Stick with the thin 40 weight oils in those.

HPR5 is suitable. So is Castrol Edge 5w40.

Even if its had a swap to a twin AVCS motor, those thinner 40's typically flow fast enough, just log your VTC angles to be sure.

A sign its too thick will be angles constantly lagging behind requests. It will be most visible while retarding angle.

  • Are their payment services offline?

    • Yep, fails at the end of checkout

  • Ordered thanks OP

Recent decade, we went from 20W-50 to 5W-30 as norm. HIGHER-quality oil is needed to deliver the THINNER-viscosity ?

Any expert would like to share their experience, eg @MasterScythe

      Recent decade?

My fathers 1959 Ford calls for SAE30.

Many cars are compatible with 20w50, but outside of aircooled engines (like Harleys and Volkswagons), it was never the norm.

30's and 40's have been 'normal' since the 50s.

And yes, thinner 'W'inter ratings require more complex oils with long chain polymers. Making them less stable long term, or under high load, but more performant while fresh.

      • Recent decade

I started changing my engine oil from 1990…my time & I can't speak for the dead, lol.

        • +2

So thats 3 decades at least. (In reality, more like 7)

30 or 40 weight oils have been the norm since cars got popular. 50 was only ever in aircooled. Also im notn clicking random links, whatever that was.

          • @MasterScythe:
