Here are somethings to note on these cheaper models
Thermal efficiency (see reviews and what ppl say I have a cheaper model and always find sweating on the outside walls even though it's been double bagged, keeps chewing 2-5A all the time)
DC and AC operations (some require additional convertor to operate AC)
Layout of dual zone and their operations ( for same you can only use one zone to freeze and some you need to run zone a to run zone b etc)
Opening of the lid (some have a fixed lid that opens one way)
Some of the additional features are dependent on additional accessories (battery to use solar)

    • Thanks for this.. Other than being a total POS, the one I have now doesn't even have a seal around the lid.. it just.. "closes".

I bought it second hand and I found a new one on AliExpress for about the same price as a better(?) one from here..

The Kings ones seem to be better than what I currently have, and, even though they may not be amazing, they do have a good warranty, it seems…

My one is something like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005454850349.html … it lasted a couple years

Wait for black friday and see what they offer then. Also there is a difference between their basic (plastic) version and their premium (metal) version so might be worth looking into that as well.

        • I thought this was their black friday prices… I'll keep an eye out.

          Thanks again for the guidance!!

@the-rabs: Black Friday prices seem to be in effect now…
            ~ AUD$515 shipped

At $515 for a fridge from uncle ali, for $85 more… yeah a bit.. I'd get the engel deal for $599, get a better unit and local warranty.
And double / triple the size.

            • @virtual81: I didn't really want to spend this much but I really do appreciate your help!

I think I'm going to go with the 55l brass monkey option..

        • The one in OP's is not in the entry range, but also made of plastic only.

      • This caught my eye as well.

Hardly any portable fridges have seals at the top these days…cool air falls down I guess.

I bought a Rovin/ Brass Monkey 45L and a solar panel. Works impressively well.

This one's decent. I've got the same model and had it since April 2021 with periods of 24/7 use for weeks, then turned off for a few months, to being used again sporadically and/or extensively.

It's been a good fridge, still runs, still gets cold, still gets really cold and keeps frozen things frozen.

    It is power hungry. Very.

Three year warranty is good though as well though, and as long as you have proof of purchase, Jaycar/RTM are apparently pretty accommodating with the warranty process.

The brass monkey battery is very overpriced - and not that great. If you need a battery then look into the various 3rd party, 3d printed adapters for Ozito batteries, etc.

But i wouldn't recommend relying on the battery - 15.5ah isn't alot when this can chew 5AH/hour. Plus it's rated around 11v, not 14.6, from memory, as it's only a 3x cell not a 4x cell, so it reaches voltage cutoff sooner than you'd expect.

That said, $350 is what I paid 3.5 years ago, so that's pretty good to get it down to that price now with the way everything's been.

I bought 399 yesterday. Just logged the price protection claim to get $50 back :-)

      • The GH2053 15Ah 14.7v Lithium is ok but yes epensive. (I got one for $230 on eBay)
These fridges don't run at 5Ah all day long - only kicks in when required to maintain temp.
Best practice for a battery fridge is bring it to temp on mains, then keep it in the shade/cool place on battery.

If you're hoping to fully charge the battery from the car 12v socket, you may want to look at a buck boost to 14.7v or you'll never see it charge past 11.5v from the car.

Depending on your needs, maybe also look at the 24/36Ah portable Kings batteries as an alternative.

My parents did a trip from QLD to VIC and back last year with this model. Mostly staying in apartments and units, but also used a battery on occasion. They pretty much ate from the fridge/freezer for the entire trip, except when staying with family and the occasional meal at a restaurant (mum has dietary restrictions that can be difficult for her to accommodate).

So yes, this is a pretty decent unit for the price.

  • Waiting for their 18l esky type fridge to go on sale.

    how is this compared to

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/877557

    and

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/877149

can someone give me some advice as i am keen to purchase one thank you

    • If you can, stretch to Engel: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/878926
slightly smaller capacity, but heaps better.

      • yea not within the price range tbh, would you recommend the mycoolman over the brass monkey at all?

        • I have a Brass Monkey 55 and would not buy another. I also own Evakool & have had an Engel for almost 30 years.
The BM is thin walled, and compressor runs more often than other fridges I have - therefore I will say it uses more power per day, which is a consideration for me when off grid relying on solar when camping etc.
I have not checked out the MyCM

    • The dual zone is quite handy on the brass monkey. And the 3 year warranty is legit. I had probs with my first one of these (exact fridge) and they were happy to replace it free of charge after doing an inspection of the problems etc, it took them a few days from memory. I think the Mycoolman is the better fridge, slightly, but I think the dual zone is the winner here. I would go with the Rovin/Brass Monkey. The inbuilt battery option, although a ripoff, is a handy little feature to have if you want to have cold drinks at the beach or on the balcony for 2 or 3 hours with no wires. I am happy with mine and glad I purchased. It runs 24/7 as a wine/beer fridge on the balcony. Controlling the temp from your phone via bluetooth is kinda cool too I guess.

      • im new to this but isnt the fridge running on 1 lid and even if its dual zone the fridge is actually on for both sides? i assume your seeing the benefit for keeping cold drinks separate from frozen goods? is that where you see value thank you

        • Yep, just one lid for both sides….but can have one side ICY for beer and the other side at 3 or 4 degrees for white wine or, yep ice cream on one side, beer/coke on the other. I also bought the cover, on sale, I have no idea if it helps at all, i guess it keeps a bit of direct sunlight off if needs be.

          • @HappyPants: Hi Happypants,

lets say if i dont need it for dual zone would i be better of buying

            https://www.brassmonkey.cool/gh2077_55l_brass_monkey_portabl…

which is on sale 50% off for $250? i can tell there is really no handle on this model tho….

            • @smeng: Wow, yeah, that's a real bargain in my books. $250 well spent. The only drawback I can think of is that it has a slightly bigger volume and probably the same size compressor running it that the 45L has, so the compressor will be running a little harder simply because of the bigger compartment it has to cool. That looks like a new model to me, I haven't seen that one in the flesh. The wheels ARE handy. You won't regret owning one of these and you will probably use it more than you think.

              Ebay for $239

              https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/256638580456?chn=ps&_ul=AU&norov…

              • @HappyPants: it feels like the OP model has the extendable handles on the correct side of the cooler to wheel where as the one i've shown you the handles are above the wheels which means you can only wheel it forward but not on an angle? because the wheels are not on the opposite side of the handle lol

              • @HappyPants: How’d you get it to come up for $239, it seems to be $261 with postage for me.

                • @markis: ebay plus is showing $239 + postage

                  • @smeng: Oh, now it comes up when I log in, it wasn’t showing when logged out. Thanks

                  • @smeng: Thanks mate, ordered one.

              • +1

@HappyPants: i ended up grabbing a 35L today for $300 as the 45L didn't fit in the ranger boot as the aluminum lid was touching slightly unfortunately

Horses for courses if you have access to plenty of power and looking for a step up ona Esky/ice box then this is probably the way to go. But if you are after a very energy efficient and very reliable fridge this may not be for you. (Weekend warrior vs off-grid hermit)

    • A similar Engel/dometic/top tier would cost double if not triple this. Would money not be better invested in more batteries?

    • I want to know how much power these things suck.. I have a 100AH Lithium battery and a 160W flexible panel.. I am curious to know how much these will drain sitting at 3c in the shade on a 35c day? (or whatever.. but is it going to be ok or is it going to kill my battery overnight?)

      • Should go for days on 100Ah

      • To give you an idea…i have a very old rusty 80 litre Waeco and running one third of it as a freezer and two thirds of it as a fridge, a 100ah battery will last almost 3 x 24 hours (3 days) with no solar help. So you will be fine even if your only topping up your battery 10 or 20% each day, you'll have plenty of power.

Been eyeing these for a year and missed out last year. I was going to get the 45L but ended up getting the 35L with the Cover which I price matched down to $100.

    • whoa! I didn't know they price match! lol. I just bought the 55L on ebay, got the $10 off and paid $12 for delivery (because all my local stores were out of stock).

      • +1

Yea Jaycar has a price match policy. I picked up in store so saved on delivery too was really lucky. $12 delivery is great though.
