The Barista express can be had for about a $100 more and comes with a grinder, otherwise the bambino offers the same functionality in a smaller footprint - and is also on sale.

    • I was able to get express for under $300 at JB last Christmas

That's a good deal. I got a refurb unit for $327 off their eBay store last week. My Sunbeam started leaking from the steam wand after almost 3 years.

What do the coffee snobs think, this or the bambino plus? Up to now have used all the pods machine.

Just got the batatza encore esp that went on sale. So only waiting for a deal on a decent coffee machine now.

I'm not an expert, but the bambino plus is a newer model, with newer technology. Better steam wand for faster, better frothing.

I got a refurbished Duo Temp Pro recently, direct from Breville, and while it made nice smooth coffee, it was leaking so I sent it back and got a refund.

Another thing, the Bambino plus, like most coffee machines, has a button for the espresso, so you can start your shot and walk away to do something else, whereas the Duo Temp Pro you have to stand there watching your shot and turn the dial back when you think it's finished.

      • Thank you, i will HODL

      @nerd1 asked:

What do the coffee snobs think

Careful when you invite us snobs… there are some serious people out there.

I have a Breville Barista Touch. I bought mine as an idiots guide to coffee because I like you, I had never tried ground coffee before. Now a few years down the track I would buy a machine without a grinder and grind what I need seperately and store it. The reason being they are noisy as hell and while its cool to grind just before you pour its incovenient in the middle of a meeting or when people are sound asleep as you can hear it right across the house. So pre grind and store in sealed container for a couple of days is perfectly fine and will not impact coffee flavour.

Now the serious people… (I'm not one of them) will have scales and weigh the beans into a cup before they grind them. Then put those beans through an empty grinder for the one cup. Then weigh the ground coffee to see how much they lost in the process (I dont think this is necessary as you dont lose much). Then they will have a de- clump tool to ensure there is no coffee grounds stuck together, then a leveller to ensure the coffee is evenly spread in the portafilter, then a tamper set to a specific pressure level to ensure its compact but not too much. Breville have finally started to enter this specialised area with their new premium cafe accessories range but i'm a Pesado fan myself because they are made right here in Australia and they have excellent cafe quality gear such as the Impact Gravity Distributor, the Self Leveling Spring Tamper and a range of beatiful portafilters such as the Hybrid Breville 54/58 Portafilter which can be spouted OR naked as you please. (Naked means no bottom)

FYI: The original Barista machines are all 54mm diameter Portafilters (the thing that holds the ground coffee). The newer ones are moving to 58mm which makes far more accessories available to you.

      • Now the serious people… (I'm not one of them)

I'm not one either, will just be dialing the grind best I can and just pour shots after shots. I probably won't be getting any of the distribution tools, at most will do something home made first. Will be looking for a portafilter after getting the machine.

Get the Bambino plus, auto froth your milk and 3 sec heat up instead of 10min with this deal, smaller and much better system

    • As mentioned above, the lack of a grinder (given its full size and compared to the barista express and above) as well as the age of the design (lacking a one-shot button) makes it somewhat sub-optimal of a purchase in 2024.

First, true coffee snobs aren't buying a Breville :)

Second, I upgraded from the Duo-Temp Pro to the regular Bambino. The Bambino is a much nicer machine to use given the ThermoJet system over this Thermocoil one (quicker start & transfer from brewing to steaming).

However, you probably need to invest in a better portafilter as the Bambino one was quite plastic and light. I actually use my old Duo-Temp one with the Bambino.
