Synthetic: does people know what this word mean in engine oil ?

Maybe wikipedia shed some light: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_oil

Maybe it's the disagreement by major players that lead to the current confusion ?

    • It doesn't count for much these days. Its mostly clever marketing.

    • I heard changing mineral oil frequently is better than using synthetic oil for extensive period.
I don't mind as long as it meets my car spec.

define "more frequently" and "extended periods".

And where did you hear such silliness?

        • +1

Really subjective and depending on your conditions, but what I understand is 5000km/6month as "more frequently", and more than 10,000km/1year as "extended period", because that's some people misunderstand when marketing terms promote "long life" for their products.

And I don't get which part you think as "such silliness."

SYNTHETIC: Mobil took Castrol/BP to court for the word 'synthetic' & LOST because there was NO universally accepted definition, https://www.google.com/search?q=mobil+took+castrol+to+court+…

'Synthetic' is meaningless, but many buyers believe that synthetic oil is more superior & their labeling is every where.

Base-oil of many brand-model are likely to have some mix of Group I, II, III: API classification. They're made from refining CRUDE oil: fossil fuel & NOT chemical creation in factory.
Group II & III are HIGHLY refined & their mix is likely included in some form in the LOWER-viscosity oil, eg 0W-16.
I don't recall any brand labeling their mix of Group I, II, III…trade secret?

MINERAL: made from crude oil, same as Group I, II, III. 'Mineral' labeling isn't use that much because of buyers' inferior perception…& evidence @ this post.

All you have is the trust of the brand, meeting specifications as per labeled, your experience from use, research & your belief.

Most of the synthetics are a group 3 hydrocracked at best. Still a good oil but rather misleading.

You dont seem to know much about oil!

Synthetic oil IS better oil. What its made from is irrellevent, its the oil specs that are important.

Every oil meets the specification on its label. It has to pass the tests. Nothing to do with beliefs!

Go to Bobistheoilguy website and read up. You CAN catch up!

  • Perfect for summer oil changes

  • An even better deal than the Premium Gold 15w-40 that was on sale recently and this gives slightly better cold start protection!

Good to see Premium semi synthetics being offered for under $20 again. No way will I ever use mineral oil again!

  • Lousy buggers at my local sold out and aren't getting more in for the sale. Also said they can't source me a bottle from other stores at that price.

    • You could get Supercheap to do a price match.

      • yes. theyre pretty good. my local supercheap is out of stock. but they said branches with stock will price match autobarn.
