OzBargain's favourite mechanical gateway watch. This Kamasu ships from Amazon Germany.

I copped a black Kamasu during Prime day this year and it hasn’t missed a beat. Factor in an aftermarket bracelet because it totally elevates the watch, but it’s a pain changing without the proper tools! It took me an hour to swap out the bracelet with hollow end links to a milled clasp jubilee bracelet from Longisland using a flathead screwdriver.

The sentiments from O15 in July last year are on point, it’s a fantastic watch for the price and I get complimented quite often. Don’t be fooled by the case dimensions, the bezel makes up quite a bit of the diameter so it doesn’t wear large.

Case Diameter (excluding crown): 41.8mm
Lug to lug: 46mm
Crystal: Sapphire
Movement: Inhouse Orient F6992 (automatic movement)
Power Reserve: 40 hours
Water Resistance: 200m

This is very nice, it's similar to the one i'm holding out for RN-AA0811E

Been waiting for a while for the RN-AA0811E to go on sale. Very nice Orient.

I got RN-AA0811E (teal with the round indices) very nice. I got an Island watch jubilee bracelet, lifts the watch and feels more expensive, and what it should be. Recommend getting one.

The pine green looks good too, great for under $300.

  • Is there any good article for someone (mid 40s) getting their first watch after years of wearing smart watch?

Video has a few good recommendations for brands in there but budgets vary wildly.

Really depends on what your budget is and what style of watch you're going for. You'll find a lot of highly recommended S tier buys.

Firstly I would recommend find what style of watch really speaks to you. Divers? Aviators? Military? Field watches? Do you want a chronograph (stopwatch function with subdials)? Then figure out whether you want a quartz or automatic movement. Quartz - way more accurate, replace a battery every 5 years, rarely (if ever) need to adjust the time. Automatic - less accurate, more prestigious, "heirloom" items, runs off movement of your wrist, need to set the time again if you don't wear it for 48 hours.

Then look at the offerings from brands in your price range. Seiko, Citizen and Orient are a good starting place. Then maybe Christopher Ward. Then you're looking at maybe Tudor. Then Omega. Then onto Rolex :)

      • I want them all 😅😅

I really shouldn't but this is so tempting.

Was looking back at the past 12 months and I've spent just over $2K on 5 watches in the past 12 months.

    • If I was starting over, I'd get this colour. The way the sun dances off the emerald dial is stunning.
I've just spent over $1k on a Genta inspired integrated watch, so I've decided not to spend any more in 2024.

Yeah, think I'm in the same boat.

Picked up a Tsuyosa small seconds in blue which is coming Monday.

Only other thing that is tempting me is a King Turtle. Wandered past a random bricks and mortar store in Melbourne the other day with the Olive / rubber strap version on clearance for $449.

    • Do it. It would good on you, great watches for the price. Easy to spend a lot more on stuff less classy.
All you need to do it upgrade or change the bracelet (but is still fine as is for a while).

  • Tried my friends one on and it wore small on my 7" wrist. Short lug to lug and alot of the face is taken up by the bezel. Wouldn't recommend for large wrists. Nice watch though.

    • I reckon it would be perfect on 6.5 - 7", they aren't small watches and the bezel isn't as chunky as some.
All depends what you're used to but they are a pretty good normal fit (and doesn't feel like a 42-43mm watch)

  • So tempting, what are the service intervals for these watches and how much do they cost? I already have one automatic and hestitate getting another one but I've been pining for this pine green for a while now. Also this is the Mako III, then is there any reason why https://www.amazon.com.au/RN-AA0811E-Automatic-Mechanical-gr… costs more? Is it because its not on sale or does it have additional features?

    • +1

Not on sale but that isn't much more if you prefer it.
(The cheapest it has got is $305 -315.

Yeah wouldn't worry about serving for cheap autos, would be fine for ages (10+ years).

      • Thanks, I actually prefer the one in this listing. Just asking the difference between this and the other.

so its okay to not use it for a while, i.e less wear on the watch itself?

        • +1

Makes no difference if wear or not, the internal oils dry out anyway over the same time.

$300 is very reasonable for these, great quality legibility and finishing. They are both pretty similar and have sapphire, I'd be happy with either.
