We've just replaced 3 ~10 year old Avanti motors with Merlin, and the difference is night and day. The Merlin openers are smoother, quieter and a step up in quality. YMMV (yes 10 years old v new) however find a garage door service agent that deals with both - like ours - and see what they say.

And the Centurion remotes are crapola compared to the Merlins as well.

    • Got to agree. I've got a Merlin and it's pretty good. Wouldn't even think twice about replacing it with another if it dies.

    • Why did you replace them? I'd guess the weak point is the mechanics and motor, and its a sealed unit so little chance of repairs.

      • One of the motors was playing up - would click then jam, and when running would stop and reverse. Our service guy told us 2 years ago these initial symptoms would lead to failure one day. Eventually it became almost every actuation and we organised the replacement for all 3, as well as the receiver unit for our Nice gate motor.

        • We have one door with a 1990s motor and opener on it. Still going, although I've replaced the motor brushes twice. Upgraded the remotes too.
