  • How hard are these to install?

  • Are there any Home key smart locks that will work with a rim lock style? Both our front and garage doors currently have this style, and while we're moving in Januar at least one of the doors at the new place is the same.

  • Hi rep - for the
"Supports: Aqara Home, Apple Home**, Google*, Alexa*, Matter*"
    *Requires Aqara Hub"
    on the eBay page

As I understand, if it really supports Matter, it should NOT need a specific hub. I thought the whole point of 'Matter' was that all these things would nicely interoperate without the need for specific matching brand of hub or similar to make their devices talk to others.
Am I incorrect in that understanding or should one or other of the "supports Matter" / "requires Aqara hub" statements be removed from that listing.
(I hope it is that the requirement for a specific hub is no longer correct)
    thanks

      Hi there,

The Aqara U50 lock is a Zigbee device. Unlike other Thread devices, which can be added to any Matter border router, it supports the Matter ecosystem via the Aqara Hub. It does require an Aqara Hub to expose itself to the Matter ecosystem.

      Thanks

    • This only supports Bluetooth (to phones) or ZigBee (specifically to an Aqara hub). The Aqara hubs then have the capability to expose their paired devices on Matter. That makes them visible to Home Assistant for example, but only with limited capabilities. e.g. you can lock/unlock the lock, and get events for lock/unlock and see the battery level. You don't get information on who or how the lock was unlocked via Matter.

So the lock doesn't correct directly to Matter, but an Aqara hub acts as a Matter Bridge.

  • Inclined to try something this on a rear door as a backup in case we lose main keys. Has anyone tried this?

    • We have the U100 with the fingerprint reader and the E1 hub (currently $249 on Amazon for the U100+E1 bundle). The fingerprint reader is excellent! I wouldn't get the U50 for the front door for that reason, but for a rear door it'd be okay (only occasional use).
