  • Guys where is the best place to buy Windows Home Server 2011 for the N40L?

    • hehe….thanks for suggesting GreatWhiteHunter - we will definitely get more options such as operating systems in by next year.

    • +1

Tried Freenas or Ubuntu? They not only free but more flexible than Win crap, really no one uses Windows for servers these days unless your workplace is tied to the MS Office suite

      • Actually, I would tend to agree. I tried WHS when I first got my N40L and even though it's a rock solid OS, I found it to be unnecessarily convoluted.

      • +2

Depends on your usage I guess. Your experience with Linux or Windows will dictate how much stuffing around you need with either system.

My N36L is running WHS2011 and it has been rock solid.

Got another N40L and will probably install another Windows Server variant.

        • You don't really need much/any Linux or BSD experience with FreeNAS, everything is pretty easily configured from the web interface, and BitTorrent (Transmission), Sickbeard etc. are one-click plugin installs.

You also get the ZFS filesystem for redundancy which is fantastic and way better than anything WHS has to offer now that Drive Extender is dead.

      • If you're looking to boot for a HTPC look at OpenELEC 2.0. I actually do run Windows 8 on mine and it's quite stable as well. I stuck with Windows mainly for Media Center and rock solid tuner support. SO I use it as a PVR, Set top and HTPC.

I like Linux but I didn't want to spend my life futzing with drivers and hoping for great PVR tuner support. Rather just got on with it and Windows.

Pries went up for the Samsung 830 256GB from 185$ to 189$ ? Get us at 179$ and I am sure you will sell for 200 nos easily :D

    • +1

Yes that model was cleaned up on last special. We are doing the best price we can on new stock and bear in mind these will get replaced very soon by 840s.

    • +4

Why do you do the $ symbol after the number?

      • i occasionally do it, brought on by using accounting software that automatically adds the dollar sign, then too lazy to click back

  • I bought the HP N40L a few sales back that you guys had and got the 120gig ssd samsung drive in last weeks sale and the time has ciome to buy the hard disks.

I would like to get 4 x 2tb WD red hard drives, are you ableto do a good deal on those?

    • I am in the same boat as above post. I bought 2x HP N40L during the last OZB deal. And in need of a couple WD Red HDD 2tb or 3tb. Would love a deal please….

    • I think mine just arrived today. I am going home early to have a look at it. Will post an update when I check it out and perhaps over the weekend when I install it.

  • Very tempting for the N40L. I have seen a few posts where people talk about removing the CDROM drive and replacing it with a HDD so you have x5 HDD instead of the max x4 is that true?

    • It doesn't come with a CD drive, but you can fit (at least) two drives in that bay if you try

    • Yes. You can get any old mounting kit to fit a 5th HDD in there. I have a nexus doubletwin in there which fits 2 HDDs in that space.

You can also cut out the metal underneath the cdrom bay and fit another HDD in there. I've got 7 3.5" HDDs and a 2.5" SSD inside my N36L, had to mount the 8th 3.5" HDD externally :(

      • Is the N36L the same case as this N40?

  • +1

How to make N40L soundable? What video card or what sound card? Thanks

    • +2

A nice video card with low power requirements is the ATI HD 5450. Pulls only around 11W, even when decoding Blu-Ray. Not for gaming obviously. Also see:

      http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Graphics_Cards

    • I installed a ati 6450, and using HDMI to connect my pioneer receiver, so all sound decoding can be done on the receiver.

    • Make sure u get a low profile bracket for/with the card, as otherwise it wont fit.

Also, plus 1 for the 6450 but 5450 is good too.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HIS-ATI-HD6450-1GB-HDMI-HTPC-Sile…

    • +1

i got a cheap usb "sound card" from ebay about $1.50 delivered :)

    • I used a passive GT210 and connected it by hdmi to my receiver, works well. If you just want 3.5mm stereo output or require mic in, get one of the "USB sound adapters" on ebay.

    • I read something about the ATI cards having compatibility issues with Linux?

      • NVidia cards have better driver support than ATI cards on Linux. I did boot OpenElec 2.0 on my ATI card and no issues there.

As a NAS I would go for a Linux OS but as a HTPC I went with Windows. I'm OS agnostic these days and choose based on the job being done and how much twiddling is involved to get it working.

Any word on stock of the N54L ?

    • No concrete news from suppliers yet.

    • Reading around it seems Europe, Mid-East & Africa will be getting theirs next week. Hopefully it won't be too long for Aus. I wonder how much if any N40L prices would drop by.

    • -1

      What.The.Hell?

I thought the N54L was a prototype - are you sure it's coming out?
That has been rumoured for nearly a year and it was just something HP was messing with when designing the original microservers, the only reason anyone even knows it exist(ed) was due to the accidental inclusion of it in the documtnation or something (screenshot of BIOS)

Can one of you guys confirm if this is actualy coming out? I was almost positive it was NOT.
Links would be really handy - I'd appreciate the heck out of it!

      Thanks guys.

      • Yes, there are official HP links now for the N54L and I believe NZ has just received it. The N40L becomes the 'middle' of the Microserver range instead of the top.

  • +1

    Can't DMCA that offer…

  • Hi Rep,

Any chances in the near future when other NAS products might be on sale (Iomega, Synology, Buffalo etc)?

    Cheers,
    rusty

    • Hi Rusty,

We will definitely bring more NAS Sale up in the very near future.

      Kind Regards
      Shopping Express

  • Was thinking of getting a 2TB seagate drive? Are they pretty good?

    Cheers

  • Just brought a 60GB Vertex 3 for $43 shipped, should I cancel and get this instead? I plan to probably store everything on my NAS

  • Thanks guys! But I would really like this if we could get pricing without the hard drive, is this a possibility in future?

  • Guys just a heads up, the HP N54L will be coming out soon and these will come down even more. The shopping express rep knows when the new ones will be released but doesn't want to say anything so he can get rid of these.

    • That last sentence seems a bit presumptuous?

      • agreed.
Also N54L doesn't seem that diff to N40L.
meaning, price might not change that much?

  • How long will this deal run? If I could buy on the 18th, that'd be great.

    • Deal expires by midnight 16-12-12

      • Thanks for having this sale again, really appreciate it!

        ShoppingExpress for MP!!!

  • Missed prior N40L sales. Finally I ordered my dream N40L.

    Thanks chief.

    • Hi bill789,

You are welcome :). Hope you will like it when it arrives.

  • what to do, what to do. Get an N40L now, or wait for the prices to maybe drop once the N54L is available?
Obviously if I already had an N40L then you wouldn't bother upgrading, but if not, what do you reckon?
The 54 starting price looks to be about $400 according to what I can find from a google search.

    • +2

For $400 what you'll get is:
      +processor: 2.2 GHz instead of 1.5 GHz
      +power usage: 10w more

Everything else remains the same as the N40L. I chalk the N54L at $400 as not worth it.

      N54L @ $300. Getting interested.
      N54L @ $250. Now you're talking.

      • Thanks for your reply!
Sorry I should have been more clear: I meant, would it make sense to wait for the N54L to come out so that it pushes the prices of the N40L down a bit further?

        • That's an assumption. HP could just as easily stop building N40Ls. All it seems to be is a motherboard change. The PS and other components look to be the same as N40L.

          While I expect it can drop a bit (maybe $189 again) I wouldn't expect a $99 N40L.

        • I am not sure how HP named the newer model N54L instead of N45L given the minimal upgrades.

        • Bugger it, order placed. It wasn't worth procrastinating about it any longer.

        • Historically i don't think the Microserver has ever gotten much less than $200. So therefore not really worth waiting.

        • No worries. I have two. I don't regret having a N40L at all and it's been on for almost 1 month straight doing HTPC duty. I have a 2nd N40L in the box which I'll set up on the second TV and just serve stuff from the HDDs in the first one. The 2nd one can also act as a spare in case something goes bzzt in the first. Bring on the successors in 1 yr.

The specs I'm really looking for in HPXXL (next one):
          USB 3.0
          HDMI output
          200W PS
          2x PCI-e X16
          SATA III
          dual GBe-NIC

      • What googling I've done seems to also confirm a price somewhere near $400 - HP being greedy with the new server? Considering the N36L was 600$ originally (lol!) this is not a serious surprise.

  • I want to buy 2 of the SSDs along with 5 Reds and 2 Seagates. But I am not getting free shipping with this in the order screen. Seems like I should since I would if it were just the SSDs.

    • Perhaps it's due to this?
      Maximum Order Quantity: 1

      • So what you're saying is, the shot is discouraging people from buying more of their products? Seems unlikely.

        • I'm simply pointing out what's stated on the page.
Might want to pm ShoppingExpress yourself. Surely they can do something about it.

  • +1

Hey Rep, how about a deal on the WD 3TB Cavier Green 3.5" drive, been waiting for a deal around the $100 mark for a while.

  • any deals on ram? looking at 8gb (2x4gb) of ECC memory for my N40L I got from you guys a couple weeks back

  • Ram is more expensive than last time, please give us some discount when buying with the N40L like last time.

  • Will the 3TB drives work with this out of the box?

    • Yes, my N40L has 5 3TB Seagates ST3000DM001s in it.

  • Good deal on the N40L. Bought it during the last deal.

  • Getting 2nd HP N40L, damn ozb hard to resist :)

  • Will the powercolor HD6450 on shoppingexpress fit in N40L? Does it come with a low profile bracket?
    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/powercolor-amd-radeon-…

  • OK..now I have three…(two from ShoppingExpress)…why do I get the feeling it isn't going to be my last..
Thanks Rep for posting with the drive options (I put in a 3Tb WD Red) and hope we'll see more in the future.

  • Hi guys,
I have a question regarding adding more than one additional hard drive to the N40L. I am planning on using either windows home server or windows 7 or 8. Without a hardware raid controller, how can you create either/or raid 0 or raid 5. Ideally I would like to install two sets of 3TB hard drives, one set of stripped for my personal stuff that I need to protect (raid 1) and the other two drives for music and videos in raid 0 so I can have 6TB of hard drive space for data that I can afford to lose. Also do you really need more than 2gig ram for a file server?

    • I believe the on board controller can do Raid 0 and Raid 1. However there are also software RAID solutions out there like FlexRAID or ZFS.

  • +1

Finally placed my order after some procrastination. Look forward to recieving it. :)

  • Another procrastinator here, but hey, it's xmas… so I placed an order. Let's see what turns up :)

    • Just wanted to say that how pleased I was with the prompt despatch and delivery. I ordered Sunday and the box was here in regional NSW Tuesday morning, Thanks Shopping Express and Australia Post.

Second, the N40L is a gem IMO. Within 90 minutes I had it running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS serveron 5 X 2T drives. It's running webmin for administration

Just the thing for those of us who can't leave things alone and must fiddle about.

AS a footnote, I was about to buy a QNAP 419. I reckon the N40L is a better deal. It's certainly a whole lot less money.

      Cheers

  • Got my shipping notice so hopefully should get it before Christmas.

For those who have one of these whats the max memory they will take and does it need to be ECC or can it jsut be regular memory?

And im planning on adding a SSD for the Boot OS. Ive just read that it only has 4 Sata ports avialable internally. What are the downsides of running my OS (Windows 7) off a USB key off the internal USb port? Or am i better off getting a SATA expansion card?

    • It actually has 6 total SATA ports. Here's how you get them:

      1-4: Internal drive bays
5: ODD port on the motherboard
6: eSATA port on the back

To make 5 a Full speed SATA port you need to flash the modified BIOS (google it) for the N40L.

To make 6 available for use internally you need to get a eSATA to SATA cable ($2 eBay) and route it from the back inside (that space right above the two PCIe ports (it flips down) is a good way to do this.

I've got my SSD Boot drive on SATA5. SATA 1-4 and 6 are 3TB WD Reds.

      • WHere have you fitted your ssd?

  • Mine was delivered this morning, and the HIS 6450 bought on ebay. Will have something to do during this X'mas.

  • Yeah got mine this morning also in Melb. Super fast shipping.
