Explains a lot.
Well done, Champ.
Hate that Amazon have decided that users don't want buttons. My 1st gen Oasis is going to have to last forever.
I used to have one with the full keyboard. Absolute shit. Frankly I don't understand why you'd want any buttons.
Regardless, the new Oasis still have buttons, so your point is moot.
You must mean sh!t as in sh!t-yeah that's an awesome model. Long live the kindle keyboard! The original and the best. GOAT
Nope! Shit as in, man it's a pos trying to enter anything on this keyboard.
Everything else? Everything else was GOAT. The free 3g was great too.
The newest Oasis came out several years ago and isn't available to buy any more (at least not via Amazon).
I aasume there is still a physical power button? Lol
I miss my Kindle 4 (non paperwhite) page turn buttons. No need to worry about accidental page turns or menu access if I want to hold it by the screen.
It lived a good 9 years before calling it quits and got replaced with a paperwhite.
I do like the backlight for the paperwhite though since most of my reading is in bed or while camping.Do you miss the page turn buttons enough to get a remote-control page turner for the kindle? (From ~$30 on eBay)
Hmmm, if I could also lock the screen from touch input then maybe.
Me too! My kindle 2011/4th gen has finally carked it after 13 years and I am so sad :( tried my partner's modern kindle and find it very frustrating to hold - I like to put my thumb on the screen (reading lying down in the tent while on hiking trips) and it registers a long press. The newer versions have the ability to disable touch input (recognising only a swipe to turn the page) so I would like to try that. Also considered Kobo for Libby/Overdrive support but they don't seem to have a model at the same price point as the basic kindle.
Make the device more expensive to build- more parts, more holes to protect from water and dust, more things to break. So as devices get
cheaper to makerefined they lose features like buttons.
Don't forget 10% cashback from TopCashback
20% from shopback!
Kindles are 0% at Shopback.
25% from Cashrewards
I have gone through t&c's of that and couldn't find if kindles are included in the Amazon devices. Shopback lists kindles separately from Amazon devices at 0%.
The safest option os TopCashback 20% as it specifies kindles in the Amazon devices list.
Yes and they confirmed in email that Kindle is included:
Thank you for your email. I hope you're having a lovely day.
Yes, the Kindle Ereader is part of the current 25% cashback offer on Amazon devices.
I hope this information helps. If you have any further questions please let me know, I'm more than happy to assist.A bit too late… back to 7% now…:*(
It's 25% at Cashrewards atm
@AccioHagrid: This really hurts, bought on Monday at JB.
Are these any good for reading manga? Or am I better off just getting an ipad or some android tablet?
Tablet is probably easier.
Either a tablet or a colour ereader, I'm waiting for the Kindle Coloursoft to come out next year because I'm locked into the Amazon ecosystem but Kobo have an excellent one as well.
Careful with Kindle colour errader. They have been recalled and Amazon stopped selling them as they have a hardware issue that cats a yellow are at the bottom of the screen, trying to fix it with software. Used are review bombing it to the point that Amazon is actually deleting reviews
they have a hardware issue that cats a yellow are at the bottom of the screen
Garfield attack
@andresampras: …casts a yellow area…
@andresampras: A well known, odieous hardware fault
It's a blessing in disguise that we won't be getting it till next year.
You might want to consider the scribe. If you are reading colour manga, then the kobo libra colour would be best. Having said that, colour ereaders are still not there yet so if colour means a lot to you, stick to tablets
https://www.amazon.com.au/Kindle-reading-writing-Paperwhite-…Things to consider:-
manga uses up way more storage than text novels. Way more, since you also consume them faster. This has 16gb, which is actually not bad for their base model. But its not ideal. A lot of manga is offered in colour only. This thing will still read it, but it will use a lot of storage. You end up having to ration storage quite carefully. These things are set up to last a long time between charges, for convenience. So the processor is not as powerful. They can chug a bit when turning the page, with the eink screen takes a while to update.
Interesting thread below, with some people suggesting koreader. But no, I wouldnt suggest the base model Kindle for manga. Go for the scribe or a tablet
https://www.reddit.com/r/ereader/comments/1d1yz87/reviewing_…This might be more to your liking. I just found this the other day. The reviews seem to say it’s got a few modes to switch between reading and regular tablet use.

Realistically you'll want a bigger screen to enjoy manga. I'd look into something like TCL's Nxtpaper tablets, they have nice anti-glare stuff without the eink limitations.
Also I'd skip this gen of the colour eReaders.
I've definitely considered the Nxtpaper tablets. I was intrigued initially but the more I thought about it, it's kind of lacking in both worlds which is what it's trying to straddle. Not a great tablet on its own (60hz screen, not very bright, weak processor, etc) but also doesn't have the key advantages of an eink tablet either like battery life and e-ink display.
I'll probably sit out until a truly great colour eink tab comes out
I have the Kobo Libra 2, the 7" display is still too small in my opinion.
Although the refresh rate is much better than when I had a Kobo mini, it's noticeably slower to a phone.
E-ink is great because it drains next to nothing on battery when "on" a frozen image (this is why when an e-reader is turned off, it could still have the book cover on the display); but if you're panning through a pdf, or flipping pages, the refresh is what uses the battery.Speculation: Maybe if you're reading in Japanese, since the written language uses less characters, the font would be bigger compared to fitting English into the speech boxes. I don't actually know if English versions uses a smaller font size.
Best bet would be to check in JB or OW demos how you think manga will be on it.
It is easier on the eyes compared to backlit displays and great if you read at bedtime. I don't think the experience for PDF files is good though.
You definitely want something a bit bigger and more powerful, but bear in mind you still want it to be fairly book-sized. Holding a 10+” tablet like a book is going to get tiring pretty quickly.
It’s in a totally different price bracket, but I went with the Lenovo Legion tablet (8.8”) and it’s amazing. I had a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite before that, which is a good size, but the screen quality and performance were a bit lacklustre. Good to dip your feet in though.
Get a colour kobo. It's worth better than the crap Amazon readers
Thoughts on which case to get for the Paperwhite version.
Official cases on amazon start at $60 for plain fabric all the way up to $100 for leather. Not sure if its worth the price tag vs a $10 case off AliExpress.
Not sure if you can find one for the current kindle but I have a cheap 'origami' case that I use which folds into a stand which is useful for hands-free reading.
Bro get the cheapest one that you like the look of. Max $15
with libgen and calibre, its just incredible how much of a life changer this is. Kindle is probably the best basic reader out there, although its really a toss up, i have a kobo and dont really care. Kindle unlimited the best subscription service out there if thats your thing
The Scribe is also on special at the moment if anyone is interested
https://www.amazon.com.au/Kindle-reading-writing-Paperwhite-…with libgen and calibre
"Please explain?" - p hansen
Libgen is a website to download everything books.
Calibre is a library manager to download/auto convert/ send the downloaded books to your kindle.
I remember I bought it 5 years ago for $79 on sale, regular was $99. They say inflation is 3%?
The rrp is $199. If they have 50% off then it would be much closer to the old sale price.
Yeah but 3% quarterly. So it compounds on top of increases in previous quarters.
The newer models are more performant too to be fair.
Is 6" too small? My phone screen is 6.2.
Different aspect ratio on the Kindle, I prefer the bigger Paperwhite screen but the basic 6" is perfectly usable as well.
Its perfectly doable for novels. Also lighter to hold, with the paperwhite you really have to use two hands.
Oh, I always need one hand free
The 2024 Kindle is 158g and the 2024 Paperwhite is 211g. Do you really need a second hand to hold an extra 53g of plastic?
It's also 6 vs 7 inches. Does not sound like much, but there is a visible difference.
Kobo > kindle
Not until they release a Libra 3. Already seeing used prices shoot up for the Libra 2 due to demand.
Don't want the colour eink, it looks pretty bad if just reading b&W novels.
Yes Kobo costs unnecessarily more than the Kindle. And the reason why Kindle is the best selling ereader in the world.
Yeah Amazon sells at a loss and recoups on book sales. Hence why they also restrict openness to alternative apps e.g. KOreader. I still bought a kindle though despite these limitations.
This doesn't even have a backlight.
Kobo
The front light is 25% brighter at max setting, now as bright as Kindle Paperwhite. With the adjustable front light and dark mode, read effortlessly any time of day on the 6” glare-free 300 ppi display.
This
Yeah, front light is better anyway, less strain on your eyes?
Paperwhite was $214 in July. Wait for a better deal I reckon.
That was the old 10th Gen 2022 version being cleared out.
It was 11th Gen.
As usual, there's not a lot of innovation going on with these 'new' models.
Is it hopeless to dream of a sub-100 price for a kindle :(
Buy a knockoff from AliExpress
Any suggestions on a cheap colour e-reader? I'm mainly gonna be using it for regular books but my daughter may occasionally use it for graphic novels. Preferably one with a screen bigger than 7".
Can you manually load books acquired elsewhere on these?
Yes use a program called 'calibre'
Either Calibre or the web based Amazon Send to Kindle: https://www.amazon.com.au/sendtokindle
You can just email it (as an attachment) to your kindle email. Then sync the kindle to load onto the kindle
Works well, but I like to keep my Kindle on aeroplane mode so it can't receive updates. Waiting for a jailbreak so I can install KOreader
Any thoughts on one of these or a Kobo Clara BW? Cheers!
Clara ftw! I have owned Kindle and the Paperwhite. Now I have the Kobo Libra Colour and I must say, it is under-rated, hands down the best ereader.
If price isn’t the primary concern for you, wait for remarkable paper pro. It’s due to be released on 10/12/24. I think I would actually use it. *looks at my dust-collecting kindles*
Been waiting for both a new model, and discount - bought 2 thanks.
I've always just used my phone and the kindle app.
But seeing the comments here and from a bit of googling I'm a bit tempted by the idea of getting a Paperwhite for reading in bed.
I imagine this deal will likely last for the duration of the Black Friday deals?
I have nothing to base it on, but my guess is yes. You might also be able to combine the sale with cashback for an even bigger discount.
As someone who used a kindle for 10 years and then lost it on a recent holiday and having to resort to a phone I can't believe how much better it is to read on a kindle (or any e-reader), my reading time has gone right down because I just don't find it comfortable and the brightness of the phone doesn't help (even at lowest settings).
I just owned a basic Kindle and never ever had the brightness above 0 - could read in direct sunlight, at home or in bed with all lights off no worries.
Never understood why anyone gets anything above the basic, does everything you need, but perhaps other could shed some light on that.
did someone say something in a past post about getting a discount if you already own a kindle?
man i was hoping they would be less during black friday sale, but i guess this is it…
edit found it:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/871187I tried and they said no. Maybe you have to have a properly discontinued model (no store access on-device)?
I upgraded from a 6th gen Paperwhite. Ended up getting the new one for 10% off from JB with Perks at launch and I'm happy.
Mine didn't even check, might try again tomorrow when au support is back on line.
It looks like this price is for 12th gen (2024) models, not 11th?
It's for the 2024 model. Amazon stopped selling the 2022 version.
Amazon lists this as Kindle 11th, though it's technically their 12th release.
Looks like $167 is the 11th gen Kindle and the paperwhite and signature are 12th gen
Thinking of buying this for a gift for someone with low vision. Can the print be made alot larger than normal easy? Equivalent to large print books which they are ok with.
My older one is just pinch to zoom… id say that it's fair to assume that featute is still there.
yes you can pinch zoom the screen and it brings up the font menu. easily bigger than large print books.
Just to confirm, is today the best time to make the purchase during Black Friday, considering the cashback?
Do new Kindles all have smooth screens now? My partner wants one like mine, which has a reflectionless matt screen.
Confused at what you mean. If by smooth screen, you are referring to a flush glass screen that feels capacitive, then no this wont have it. You need to go at least to Paperwhite model for that.
Pretty decent deal, used topcashback and a giftcard from Macquarie
I would like an update on whether it went through fine please.
Worked fine for me, got the cashback credited and I already pocketed the savings from the giftcard. Might be buying more stuff off amazon 🤣
Me too. The present receiver was very buy it now. $209.10 for a 32g signature not bad. Nevermind rip…. there 10% amazon giftcard promo right now.
Good Guys have it for $239 so you can get Officworks to price beat.
