      Explains a lot.

I guess if you are reading non-fiction, then yes

Hate that Amazon have decided that users don't want buttons. My 1st gen Oasis is going to have to last forever.

    • -4

I used to have one with the full keyboard. Absolute shit. Frankly I don't understand why you'd want any buttons.

Regardless, the new Oasis still have buttons, so your point is moot.

      • +4

You must mean sh!t as in sh!t-yeah that's an awesome model. Long live the kindle keyboard! The original and the best. GOAT

      • +1

The newest Oasis came out several years ago and isn't available to buy any more (at least not via Amazon).

    • +1

I aasume there is still a physical power button? Lol

    • +1

I miss my Kindle 4 (non paperwhite) page turn buttons. No need to worry about accidental page turns or menu access if I want to hold it by the screen.
It lived a good 9 years before calling it quits and got replaced with a paperwhite.
I do like the backlight for the paperwhite though since most of my reading is in bed or while camping.

      • +1

Do you miss the page turn buttons enough to get a remote-control page turner for the kindle? (From ~$30 on eBay)

        • Hmmm, if I could also lock the screen from touch input then maybe.

  • +7

Don't forget 10% cashback from TopCashback

  • +2

Are these any good for reading manga? Or am I better off just getting an ipad or some android tablet?

    • +5

      Tablet is probably easier.

    • +1

Either a tablet or a colour ereader, I'm waiting for the Kindle Coloursoft to come out next year because I'm locked into the Amazon ecosystem but Kobo have an excellent one as well.

      • Careful with Kindle colour errader. They have been recalled and Amazon stopped selling them as they have a hardware issue that cats a yellow are at the bottom of the screen, trying to fix it with software. Used are review bombing it to the point that Amazon is actually deleting reviews

        • +3

          Garfield attack

        • It's a blessing in disguise that we won't be getting it till next year.

You might want to consider the scribe. If you are reading colour manga, then the kobo libra colour would be best. Having said that, colour ereaders are still not there yet so if colour means a lot to you, stick to tablets
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Kindle-reading-writing-Paperwhite-…

      Things to consider:-
manga uses up way more storage than text novels. Way more, since you also consume them faster. This has 16gb, which is actually not bad for their base model. But its not ideal. A lot of manga is offered in colour only. This thing will still read it, but it will use a lot of storage. You end up having to ration storage quite carefully.

These things are set up to last a long time between charges, for convenience. So the processor is not as powerful. They can chug a bit when turning the page, with the eink screen takes a while to update.

Interesting thread below, with some people suggesting koreader. But no, I wouldnt suggest the base model Kindle for manga. Go for the scribe or a tablet
      https://www.reddit.com/r/ereader/comments/1d1yz87/reviewing_…

    • This might be more to your liking. I just found this the other day. The reviews seem to say it’s got a few modes to switch between reading and regular tablet use.

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/tcl-nxtpaper-11-wi-fi-128gb-…

    • Realistically you'll want a bigger screen to enjoy manga. I'd look into something like TCL's Nxtpaper tablets, they have nice anti-glare stuff without the eink limitations.

Also I'd skip this gen of the colour eReaders.

Get a colour kobo. It's worth better than the crap Amazon readers

  • +1

Thoughts on which case to get for the Paperwhite version.

Official cases on amazon start at $60 for plain fabric all the way up to $100 for leather. Not sure if its worth the price tag vs a $10 case off AliExpress.

    • Not sure if you can find one for the current kindle but I have a cheap 'origami' case that I use which folds into a stand which is useful for hands-free reading.

  • +5

with libgen and calibre, its just incredible how much of a life changer this is. Kindle is probably the best basic reader out there, although its really a toss up, i have a kobo and dont really care. Kindle unlimited the best subscription service out there if thats your thing

The Scribe is also on special at the moment if anyone is interested

    • with libgen and calibre

      "Please explain?" - p hansen

      • Libgen is a website to download everything books.
Calibre is a library manager to download/auto convert/ send the downloaded books to your kindle.

I remember I bought it 5 years ago for $79 on sale, regular was $99. They say inflation is 3%?

    • The rrp is $199. If they have 50% off then it would be much closer to the old sale price.

    • Yeah but 3% quarterly. So it compounds on top of increases in previous quarters.

  • +1

Is 6" too small? My phone screen is 6.2.

    • +2

Different aspect ratio on the Kindle, I prefer the bigger Paperwhite screen but the basic 6" is perfectly usable as well.

    • Its perfectly doable for novels. Also lighter to hold, with the paperwhite you really have to use two hands.

      • +3

Oh, I always need one hand free

      • +1

The 2024 Kindle is 158g and the 2024 Paperwhite is 211g. Do you really need a second hand to hold an extra 53g of plastic?

        • It's also 6 vs 7 inches. Does not sound like much, but there is a visible difference.

  • +3

    Kobo > kindle

    • Not until they release a Libra 3. Already seeing used prices shoot up for the Libra 2 due to demand.

Don't want the colour eink, it looks pretty bad if just reading b&W novels.

    • Yes Kobo costs unnecessarily more than the Kindle. And the reason why Kindle is the best selling ereader in the world.

  • This doesn't even have a backlight.

    Kobo

    • +2

The front light is 25% brighter at max setting, now as bright as Kindle Paperwhite. With the adjustable front light and dark mode, read effortlessly any time of day on the 6” glare-free 300 ppi display.

    • Yeah, front light is better anyway, less strain on your eyes?

  • -1

Paperwhite was $214 in July. Wait for a better deal I reckon.

    • That was the old 10th Gen 2022 version being cleared out.

      • It was 11th Gen.

As usual, there's not a lot of innovation going on with these 'new' models.

  • Is it hopeless to dream of a sub-100 price for a kindle :(

    • Buy a knockoff from AliExpress

      • Any suggestions on a cheap colour e-reader? I'm mainly gonna be using it for regular books but my daughter may occasionally use it for graphic novels. Preferably one with a screen bigger than 7".

  • Can you manually load books acquired elsewhere on these?

    • +5

Yes use a program called 'calibre'

    • +1

Either Calibre or the web based Amazon Send to Kindle: https://www.amazon.com.au/sendtokindle

    • +1

You can just email it (as an attachment) to your kindle email. Then sync the kindle to load onto the kindle

      • Works well, but I like to keep my Kindle on aeroplane mode so it can't receive updates. Waiting for a jailbreak so I can install KOreader

  • +1

Any thoughts on one of these or a Kobo Clara BW? Cheers!

    • Clara cuz it sounds better than "kindle"

    • +1

Clara ftw! I have owned Kindle and the Paperwhite. Now I have the Kobo Libra Colour and I must say, it is under-rated, hands down the best ereader.

  • +1

If price isn’t the primary concern for you, wait for remarkable paper pro. It’s due to be released on 10/12/24. I think I would actually use it. *looks at my dust-collecting kindles*

  • Been waiting for both a new model, and discount - bought 2 thanks.

  • I've always just used my phone and the kindle app.

But seeing the comments here and from a bit of googling I'm a bit tempted by the idea of getting a Paperwhite for reading in bed.

I imagine this deal will likely last for the duration of the Black Friday deals?

    • I have nothing to base it on, but my guess is yes. You might also be able to combine the sale with cashback for an even bigger discount.

    • As someone who used a kindle for 10 years and then lost it on a recent holiday and having to resort to a phone I can't believe how much better it is to read on a kindle (or any e-reader), my reading time has gone right down because I just don't find it comfortable and the brightness of the phone doesn't help (even at lowest settings).

I just owned a basic Kindle and never ever had the brightness above 0 - could read in direct sunlight, at home or in bed with all lights off no worries.
Never understood why anyone gets anything above the basic, does everything you need, but perhaps other could shed some light on that.

  • did someone say something in a past post about getting a discount if you already own a kindle?

man i was hoping they would be less during black friday sale, but i guess this is it…

    edit found it:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/871187

    • I tried and they said no. Maybe you have to have a properly discontinued model (no store access on-device)?

I upgraded from a 6th gen Paperwhite. Ended up getting the new one for 10% off from JB with Perks at launch and I'm happy.

      • Mine didn't even check, might try again tomorrow when au support is back on line.

  • It looks like this price is for 12th gen (2024) models, not 11th?

  • Thinking of buying this for a gift for someone with low vision. Can the print be made alot larger than normal easy? Equivalent to large print books which they are ok with.
