  • Buy or not?

    • +4

      Definitely buy :)

    • +2

yeah there a good and bad things about this thing, if you want something that does a good job at writing though the remarkable Pro just came out. for just reading only just get a regular kindle.

    • Surprisingly good, just make sure you're going to draw or write with it first as it's half of the cost.

  • +3

If you have an old Kindle you can contact Amazon for a discount.

What range of discount can you expect?

    • +1

15% to 20% depending on the Customer Support Person.

      • +3

        Thanks, this is great.

For anyone who wasn't sure how this works (like me), you contact Amazon via live chat (probably can do via callback too).
Ask for discount for having an old Kindle. They will tell you to buy the new Kindle Scribe for the listed price and contact them once you receive it, then they will refund you the discount (15% for me). They make a note on your account after the chat and send you an email to confirm it. I confirmed that this discount stacks with the sale price.

        • +1

          doesnt work for me unfortunately

          • +1

@emeraldpiggy: Do you have Registered kindle?

            • @AH: yes i have.
              Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation)
              Registered on 11 August 2020

              • @emeraldpiggy: The discount is applicable only on those devices which are expired. this is what they told me.

        • order placed, hopefully, the old device discount will work with cashback.

    • +2

What on earth did you told the rep?

  • +1

Is the old kindle to trade-in or do they just further discount?

  • +1

15% cashback takes it under $400

    • +1

Not sure if Cashback would be honoured if you ask for discount from Amazon if you already have a kindle.

      • I thought that Kindle devices were 0% cashback?

        • +1

i can see topcashback have mentioned 15% for Kindle as well

          • @MoJ: Ah yes, could've sworn when I looked into a Kindle a few weeks back the cashback 0%

            Thanks.

        • +1

To find out the cashback %, just click on the 'Cashback' button to the top right of this page, right under the 'Go to Deal' button.

      • Can confirm with Cashrewards I got 15% CB and also the Amazon 15% off too. Around $140 extra off.

  • +3

With basic pen is $400, so if you want it mostly for reading might make more sense.

  • Isnt there a new kindke release imminent?

    • +2

Rumour the e-colour is coming early 25? Not sure that is for Scribe version though. Probably the smaller versions first?

  • +4

Is there a shortage with the basic Kindles (Paperwhite) atm? Always seems to be unavailable on Amazon

    • +2

I got told after 20th October they will be available

      • Hopefully, there's a Black Friday launch sale.

They're so expensive. I got a Paperwhite 32gb 4g for $208 back in 2021. Now my youngest wants a Kindle (well I do as their appetite for books is enormous). But I'm not spending $300-400 on one.

        • +2

Keep checking on fb marketplace or set an alert. Just picked up 11th gen Paperwhite signature 32gb for $150. Wasn't even used much and not a single scratch enywhere.

        • Yeah what's with the cost of these things these days??

    • +2

Rumours is that there is a new model on the horizon.

      • hopefully they'll release the full range here, especially the kids version.

    • I've been looking and they just don't exist.

  • +5

Tempted, but I already have the new Kobo Colour… will pass and wait till next time.

PS - was able to get a further 15% discount by giving the CS rep on chat the serial number of my old kindle.

    • +4

I got the kobo color from JB for $310 last week but thinking of returning it color comes at a cost of decreased clarity.

How did you contact the rep?

    • I already have the new Kobo Colour

How do you find the colour eInk experience, eg. battery life, etc.?

  • Or 32GB with premium pen for $479. Topbashback (not shopback/cashreward) 15% cashback as well.
(was $429 on prime day though)

  • +2

I have one of these and love it. It’s not quite as feature packed as other eink note takers, but it gets all the basics right and the lack of access to android is actually a pro in my book. I use it mainly for my to-do list, taking longer notes, drawing with my young kid, and reading academic papers. I took it to a training event recently and had a whopping great pdf on it and the Scribe handled it like a champ. Not sure that if there’s a colour Scribe on the way, but this one is already snappy, thin and a joy to use. Just expect it to be quite limited in what it offers, but it does all those things very well.

    • +1

Why do u prefer not having access to other apps? I use the numerous public library collections etc

      • I like that it’s just for reading and note taking. There’s no risk of wasting time on the internet or other things you can do on a phone. It just does two things but does them well and is way cheaper than something like a remarkable

        • Fair enuf!

  • +1

From the videos I've watched the whole editing/note taking process seems very clunky and gimmicky?

  • Any chance this could go down a bit more on Black Friday?

  • So eBook readers are just slowly becoming tablets now i guess?

    • Yes, eInk readers have WiFi, MicroSD access and those which are based on Android will allow you to install Apps onto the reader.

  • +3

I like the Boox note air 3C instead

    • Can't stand the darker screen of the C - but the non-C B/W version is good.

    • +1

I got this recently as well and I love it. The colour is really helpful for note taking and it runs OneNote well.

  • Worth waiting for the 2nd version?

  • +1

    bring back $350 deal!

Lenovo Smart Paper - I got one when it was $350 at OW and I am very happy with it. format, screen, pen, functionality is just what I need

plus I installed Kindle app on it, and it's a better Kindle than what Amazon is selling IMO

  • +2

Actually decided to go with remarkable paper pro. Costs a lot more but works a lot better for me I think. Don’t want the distractions with iPad, but not so much that you have to rely on emailing documents all the time instead of syncing. Plus not sure how I feel about Amazon ecosystem.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/RemarkableTablet/comments/1fnyu7f/r…

  • +3

Genuine question - why would someone buy this over an ipad for similar price? Apart from screen readability under direct daylight and very very marginally lighter weight, ipad and other tablets have better specs in every way imaginable

    • +8

many people (including me) find they get distracted reading on devices with email/browsers/etc.

but 6wk battery life, much easier on the eyes, and for the traditional 6" Kindle the weight is noticeably less (mine weighs about as much as my phone). But being able to read in the sun/outdoors is a huge plus.

    • +6

Comfort in reading, E-Ink display greatly reduces eye strain compared to LCDs.

    • +4

It's nicer to read books on these compared to ipads. It's closer to ink on paper.

  • Could this be used as a Calendar for the family? So when not being used as an e-reader it would sit on the kitchen bench or wall and replace our paper calendar.
It would need to sync with google calendar or iCalendar.

    • +1

      That's an expensive calendar.

      You need something like this:

      I made an eink calendar
      https://www.reddit.com/r/eink/comments/1f0g4yf/i_made_an_ein…

    • Get an Amazon Echo Show 10 instead. Displays the calendar, you can add events verbally, and it'll also remind you verbally as well.

We used to run an excel spreadsheet printed out calendar on the fridge. With everyone having google calendar, they can enter their own events on their own devices but share them on the 'family calendar'.

There's a small learning curve (YouTube), but its A LOT better than a manual fridge calendar.

      • Thanks, that looks like a lot better system. Has some other features that we are likely to use eg weather, photo memories

        • You can set timers for cooking, turn on the radio to a particular channel, get notifications from a Ring doorbell, stacks of stuff.

    • is the choice of an eink device because of the power saving?

Otherwise plenty of sub$100 tablets on Amazon. or currently the Echo Show 8 is $149 which does so much more (and the sound it puts out is very good).

  • +1

    This or remarkable 2?

    • +4

If you look on marketplace there are usually 3 or 4 Remarkables being resold, almost never see recent model Kindles or Kobos

      I'd try before you buy

    • +1

Recommend try before you buy. I'm loving my remarkable 2 (mainly journal and pdf annotation). But because i'm Mac and not windows - it's harder to change sleep screen / templates etc. But you can buy journal pdfs or templates online -> and sync it across (via wifi)

I'm just create my own custom journal by mix and matching from different journal pages (edit / resize on canva) -> combine into a pdf.
      - and doesn't have to be perfect, just get started
      - and later when you want to add new pages in, create a new pdf, and then on the remarkable tablet -> send the pages you want across pdfs

      I bought
      - 3rd party case off amazon (remarkable's case didn't look like it really covered the corners, and I was worried about drop protection)
      - and Steadler's jumbo noris digital pen (which is much cheaper than remarkable's)

      hope that helps

NB - if you want to use remarkable for reading ebooks - easy to sync across. but do not that the highlights on the remarkable… can't be easily exported for now. (so I still use a Kobo to read, as I like to export my highlights to Readwise)

      • +1

thank you for taking the time to write this comment, it was really helpful. I own a kindle paperwhite so I'm really searching a better way to write/keep my notes

        • very welcome

an amendment to my experience on the remarkable above.
          - it's not as easy to move pages from 1 pdf to another.
          - (only inbuilt template pages can be moved that way)
          - pages from your custom pdfs -> can't be exported and moved into another pdf

          and so my workaround
          - export (wifi) the pdf I want to add pages into -> onto computer
          - manually add in the pages i want in that pdf
          - import (wifi) back onto remarkable.

          but with every export
-> all previously handwritten notes become 'baked in' to the document.
          - 'baked in' = you can't edit, nor can you copy it

-> you'll also lose any tags you've put in that document on re-import.
          - so I keep my old documents in an archive folder on the remarkable -> as all the tags are still there (for my to search again later)
          - and this is my limiting factor to how many times i'll export / add pages / reimport … as I rely heavily on accurate tags..

          .
so this workaround isn't 100% usable in all situations.

but i figured, this is a step up from my previous life of physical notebooks
          - i couldn't erase old pages anyway, nor was I bothered to cut up a page to past it in a new spot -> no loss if the same happens here haha

Kobo Libra Colour way better. Period.

  • Many unhappy customers with genuine concern of overly sensitive pen and that it wiped out side loaded ebooks not from kindle.

    • that it wiped out side loaded ebooks not from kindle.

yeah that's my concern. Amazon is starting to become more accountant-run, than their traditional "keep them happy and they'll keep coming back".
