VA vs OLED, not in the same league

    • +4

Not in the same price range either

      • +1

Why would they be? OLED should always be more expensive than a VA panel.

        • +3

I'm not saying they would, but for my use case anything over $500 is extravagant

          • +1

@Pusdi: usage - meh, once you go OLED you just cant look at any other screen - I have been waiting for OLEDs my whole life
I recall getting the best Predator IPS screens years ago and always thought they looked washed - then OLED appeared, its the end game tech

            • @botchie: Yet I went back to IPS, even VA is better. OLED as it is SUCKS at text. It needs to be standard RGB or >150ppi.

              • @dotJaz: VA and IPS have terrible blacks , bleed
Not for HDR or any serious gaming
If you want clear text but an apple product cuz you ain't gamin

      • -4

If you don't want to spend big, IPS is the logical purchase.
VA panels are a joke, and not suited for computer monitors at all.

        • You obviously have no clue. VA can reach 3000:1 native contrast and 15-20ms is perfectly fine for non-gaming usage. Samsung VA/QLED can reach sub-10ms. View angle is irrelevant for PC and a non-issue to begin with. So you are categorically wrong.

    • -1

      is it Va or Qled???……?????

      • +2

        This is an OLED.

I suspect the comment from Botchie is in reference to the OP thinking the S3422DWG (the VA panel) is somehow "better value" which isn't a meaningful comparison.

  • +6

Ooof, tempting but I so don't need it… Currently have an older model IPS UW, and have big fomo seeing all the OLEDs these days.

    • the $600 55 inch oled tv from friday… i missed out big time if that price "error" is honored.

    • +6

Life is too short get it and sell the other on marketplace

I have the DW its amazing

      • +1

I recommend it too, love my DW

    • +1

Ina very similar situation, got the Gigabyte 34 in screen atm, really got no complaints, but everytime seeing deals for this one or the Samsung G8 , can stop thinking about them ….

    • +1

Wen't from a VA panel to this OLED and honestly I love it.

Yeah it's expensive and we don't "need" it, but man no ragrets

  • +9

    @muzeeb

    • Boomerang

  • Great monitor.

  • This or the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 that's going on for 1.2k?

    • +1

      This one.

    • +4

Dell has 3 year next business day replacement warranty, even on burn in.

      • +1

As someone who's gone through that process for this screen, it's not next day and they only give out refurbs with other issues they haven't fixed

        • +7

well there you go. Mine was next day, they provided a courier pickup for the old panel once I was happy with the replacement they sent. And the new one I received was brand new.

          • @jk82: Was yours within the first 30 days?

    • I think the Sammie G8 which has xxxxxDGxxxxxx part number is with the new gen panel, can anyone verify plz?

      • DG is new panel yes, BG is old

    • Trade in an old monitor and get the Samsung one for $1099.

  • +1

I bought this monitor a few months ago for a similar price, and its absolutely incredible. Highly recommend.

  • +1

Got this monitor earlier this year. It's pretty darn good.

  • Would like something like this, but not a fan of curved monitors.

    • +5

Have you used ultrawides? The few I've tried that are not curved sucked, a slight curve is good IMO, for home or work.

  • Perfect timing, needed a new monitor for Stalker 2!

  • -1

    VA has better text clarity

    • -1

Yeah because reading text is exactly what a gaming monitor should be focused on.

      • +1

        doesn't change what i said

        • -1

What you said isn't relevant to the market audience.

If people want a monitor that renders text well, they also have far better options than consumer VA garbage.

          • +1

@Riceplate: it's interesting you'd think the AW qd-oled market audience totally excludes people looking for productivity-oriented usage patterns where text clarity matters. much less the audience of the S3422DWG

            • -2

@theadeptus1: They are both Gaming Monitors.
One is a VA piece of garbage, one is a QD-OLED. In terms of raw performance, it's not even close.

If people get the Alienware for productivity, so be it. Even then, text clarity is just one extremely small part of "productivity". If you're only doing office work and buy an Alienware, you are a fool.

              • +1

@Riceplate: I think your argument is a bit blunt and ignores the context of OPs question. OP isn't disparaging the gaming performance, it's a given that OLED takes the cake when it comes to gaming.

It's quite obvious from the question and context that they're referring to people who use one screen for both work and gaming, and that replacing a VA for an OLED might be a downgrade with the text clarity for work vs. a bonus for gaming so people should consider both the positives and mindful of the negatives.

As someone who works from home probably a day a week, I'm in the category of not too fussed, but if you were say working off of the OLED regularly, it might be an issue with burn in/text clarity. It's definitely valid and should be discussed.

  • +1

Have been using this for about 1 year. Excellent monitor. My only gripe is that I can't get HDR to look as good as it looks on my LG OLED TV. Doesn't even come close to the HDR performance on the LG. But it's a much better PC monitor than the LG so it's a decent trade-off, and it's still better than any other monitor I have used.

    • Have you calibrated it using the windows hdr calibration tool?

      • Yeh, didn't help. And every guide I see also says that it's better without any calibration, which I also tried and didn't like. Then others say that the reason people don't like it is because they're not used to real accurate HDR. But the LG is more accurate (when tweaked correctly) and looks much better.

    • +1

It’s because of the low 10% HDR highlight brightness, it’s roughly half as bright so HDR doesn’t look that different from SDR

  • I would buy for gaming but more then half the time would get used for office work. So might not be worth.

  • +2

I'm still tossing up between this and the 32" 4K panel.

Can any owners chime in on their experience with the text blur?

    • Im about to downgrade from my Acer X34 to a 32 4K Dell g3223q (LCD not QD OLED)

Dont play game and I think 32 4K would be more beneficial than 34 UW

      • What do you use it for?

        • +1

Notes, Mind Maps, Video Editing, YouTube

    • +2

I work from home 5 days a week and have had the S3422DWG for a couple of years now. I have my work laptop and gaming PC hooked up to the monitor. As part of a recent monitor trial at work, I grabbed the AW3423DWF and used it as my daily driver. It's great for gaming, though I didn't really notice a huge difference compared to the S3422DWG if I'm honest. Brighter for sure, but not as massive a gain as what I thought I would get (I don't know what I expected, just more I guess).

The Alienware was fairly bad for work tasks though. Text was blurry so spending 8 hours a day looking at it didn't work for me. I have a 27" QHD Dell as my second monitor so seeing text on that made it really obvious. I lasted around 3 weeks before swapping it back out for the S3422DWG. Alienware is sitting in the garage under a garbage bag gathering dust!

Good for gaming, but as a lot of reviews will tell you, pretty ordinary with text. If I were to just be gaming I think I would still go with S3422DWG and spend money elsewhere, but plenty would feel the other way around.

    • Im thinking the same, leaning towards the 32" because it is 4k

    • +1

Take this with a grain of salt since I don’t own the DWF and have only used it quite a few times at a friends place. Bought the Samsung G8 (G80SD, 3rd gen OLED, 32” 4K panel) a few weeks ago and while I loved the DWF my friend has, I’m just blown away by the Samsung. Samsung was a bit finicky to setup with Windows but I find it to be brighter and more pleasant to use than the Dell. HDR is blindingly bright and 4K is beautiful. Noting that I’m in my 40s and general consensus is you start valuing higher resolution over higher refresh rate and response time as you age.
Plus the “TV mode” is pleasantly useful. In a dual monitor setup, I often just switch the Samsung to TV mode for YouTube, Stremio, Amazon P for use with the remote and keep the second monitor on for PC use. Bottom line, I have three use cases: gaming (70%), media consumption (20%) and productivity (10%) and the Samsung fits very well for each use case.

      • I'm in my 40s and higher refresh rate has become more.important for me than resolution.

My eyes are going to shit clarity wise, so now all I'm left with is frame rate judder.

Anything sub 60hz is pain in my brain. Anything 120hz+ feels like my brain is no longer trying to concentrate on the image.

  • I am using the Xiaomi 2k 34'' VA panel. Is this one worth upgrading?

  • not too sure about wide screens, but 1440p240fps oled with cheap brand (same panel as good ones) are coming, such as Koorui 27E8QK for like 500$ EURO. cant find where to buy in Australia yet but seems like the wave is coming.

    • Unless it's drop shipped from China warehouse it won't be much cheaper
Tax and duty add 15% then they add another 10% (profanity) Australians tax
If it's 500 eur MSRP then by the time it hits Australia it's already over $1000 aud

    • Why would you go for any of those when you can get the Samsung 360hz oled often for sun $800?

  • Thoughts on this for mainly movies and word processing?

    • Movies yes, word processing is hit or miss or some people. Doesn't bother me except some specific fonts look like ass

  • +3

I use this for gaming and for work.

Unexpectedly, I've really enjoyed using this monitor for Word and Excel. I don't understand how people can find the text to be blurry? It's perfectly sharp on mine.

    edit:

    Other things to note:

    • It does feel smoother, snappier and more crisp compared to my dell 27inch 4k LCD monitor and 1440p LCD monitor.
    • It took a while to adjust to the curve
    • The blacks do feel nicer
    • True blacks aren't really a thing in movies unless you are watching horror movies and it's not such a big deal
    • The colour reproduction is nice and photos I've taken look a bit better out of the box compared to the other screens
    • It still feels like a step up from a 27 inch screen but you quickly get used to it
    • Going into the office and working on smaller screens is an adjustment.
    • +1

I second this. But should point out something.

I picked this up for gaming and had a 38 inch alienware (IPS panel) I was using for work. At first the text was bad. Then after a couple of firmware updates, got rid of the 38 inch. After the updates, the quality of the text was as good as the 38 inch IPS panel.

  • Just confirming, this still doesn't have a KVM like the Dell monitor, does it?
Website suggests it has PIP/PBP but no mention of KVM.

    • No KVM switch with this one

  • For gaming the 27 inch 360hz 1440P monitors are a better buy.

    • +1

Not really, it depends on what games you play. If you play competitive shooters, then sure a 360hz monitor will be better. But for just about every other genre, the ultrawide is amazing.

      • -2

What would be better a new 360hz or the Samsung G8 ultrawide?

  • +3

Got this for 1300-ish thru dell last year, 60% work 40% gaming and watching movies, youtube etc.

    My personal use:
Even after a year later with extensive excel and CAD use and a bunch of HDR gaming (FH5,HD2,GoT). Average on time for my monitor was 8-9hrs. So far no burn in, but got the 1500hr panel refresh popup that lasted an hour or so. I do turn it off after use tho so that may have helped.

screen is glossy but not as glossy as my oled tv, tried using both for the pc and the tv was way better imo. Games just look so sharp on 4k, but my desk was not deep enough for it to be comfortable for work so back to monitors.

Coming from a s2721dgf 1400p dell ips monitor, I didn't think it was that big of a difference going into ultrawide? The extra space on the sides are nice, but if you have multiply tabs open at the same time (3 or more) it squishes the window just a little too much. Great for sim racing and story games.

If you got the cash, get a new generation panel; limited budget but still want an oled, get this. Anything below 1k go for the cheapest high refresh ips you can find, usually around 450-600 it gets competitive on pricing for good panels.
