Thanks op, will give this a try.
    P.S bezos still sucks.

  • +2

do you need to use the subscription or can one go without it?

    • +3

      https://support.blinkforhome.com/en_GB/subscription-features…

scroll down bottom and expand table to compare the free plan v paid plan. But TLDR the basic functionality of being a camera is free, motion activated recording is free* (as long as you bought the additional $79 Sync Module, BYO USB Flash drive).

      • +1

Amazon page description says Sync Module 2 included.
"Save and share clips — No monthly fees required when using local video storage functionality with the Sync Module 2 (included) and a USB drive (sold separately). Or choose to store events in the cloud with a free 30-day trial of the Blink Subscription Plan."

        • +1

Yeah it's a bit confusing as it's only mentioned at the end of the entire description. I re-read it after seeing this comment and got in touch with Amazon Support because I had purchased the sync module separately (don't need two).

They responded saying: "the blink camera bundle is included with the sync module". So I've cancelled the sync module, $300 for 5 cameras and the module is pretty good.

          • +2

@adelliah: Almost did the same, only place I found confirmation on the listing page was the above. Glad you found it elsewhere.

      • +3

Includes one Outdoor 4 camera, one Sync Module 2, two AA lithium metal batteries, one mounting kit, one USB cable, and one power adaptor.

        • Can confirm this. I got my order delivered today and sync module is included.

  • Can this push motion detection notifications to Alexa like Ring camera (and also compatible with Alexa routines)?

    • +1

      Description says: Works with Alexa
Stream live video, arm and disarm your camera, set helpful Alexa Routines, and more with a compatible Alexa device.

  • +2

The Blink Mini 2 compared to the Tapo C210, this one needs a subscription to give Person detection notifications lol

Otherwise wouldve given the Blink 2 Mini (indoor) a shot.

Some of amazon's apps really suck ass (looking at their Photos app)

  • +5

    Add-on camera is for$60, so it's $5 cheaper instead you buy 2-pack/3-pack

  • If you only need one, you can select to buy an addon camera for $60 rather than an individual camera for $75

    • +2

That doesn't come with the Sync module, so would be useless

      • +3

I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads-up

        • +1

does each camera need a sync module to work?

          • +2

@sun sunny: No - just the one sync module which you power up via USB and then connect the WiFi

      • Dont you just need 1 sync module? Can connect up to 10 devices. I dont think you need one for each device but someone please correct if this is wrong.

        • Yes just the 1 sync module - the add on camera option is the only 1 that doesn't come with the sync module which you need

  • I'm pretty keen on this thanks for sharing have been thinking of installing camera's for a while. Anyone here using these at the moment??

  • +1

What's the best rechargeable battery for these - I've got the Blink 2 outdoor cameras and have been using Eneloops, but they're flat in a week or so…

Think I need to go lithium

    • That doesn’t seem right. They’re saying two year battery life on 2 x AA’s. Would using Eneloops really knock them down to a week?

      • +1

The 2 batteries that are suppied are lithium, so more powerful than Eneloops (you're actually only meant to use lithium) but they still work with Eneloops…. I'm just after a rechargeable lithium so I don't have to change over so often

        • +2

A lot of rechargeable lithium AA batteries have a sudden voltage dropoff so the battery indicator% won't work properly, it will go from full battery to low battery pretty suddenly. Basically the cell will maintain 1.5v until the charge drops to 20% and then suddenly only provides 1.2v for the remaining time.

          • @azukay: Yeah that's was i thought - found these which have a constant 1.5V - a bit pricey though!!

            • @urbancartel: you can try aliexpress, it is cheaper there, but just avoid the ones with crazy high mAH since that would be fake.

            • @urbancartel: I've been using XTAR. Had a couple early failures (including the charger), and their support was a bit lousy.
Amazon support were great, and the batteries themselves, excluding the failures, have been great.
I'm using them in a door lock, as having a constant 1.5v is helpful to keep the motor moving fast.
Using alkaline or nimh, the motor slows down and it's a bit annoying.

They also have a low battery warning, when they get low, they drop from 1.5v to 1.1v, which then makes the doorbell sing a song, indicating charge time.

              • @ad62623: Yeah i had a look at those - looks like they drop to 1.1v when they get to around 5/10% charge left - what charger do you have, the LC8 or BC8? Thanks for the info

                • @urbancartel: I had the lc4, but it stopped working and had a small section of melted plastic.
Amazon accepted the return and now I have a lc8. 8 slots is overkill, I can't imagine needing to charge so many so often, but it was the best deal at the time.
Definitely wait for deals, should be some coming up for BF.

  • +2

I'm a bit wary when you see 3 reviews on the Amazon website
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Introducing-Blink-Outdoor-Wireless…

and 2 of them are clearly fake reviews by shills.

    • Theres plenty of reading on the US site

      • whats your experience with them? I dont intend to use their subscription so am concern about the lack of function without subscription.

        • I find them great - i've had both the 1st version and 2nd version (imported them both from the states with black Friday deals)

Saying that I've never had any other cameras to compare them too

  • Wondering if you can price beat at Bunnings as they’re sold in store too.

    • +1

      Worth asking though

  • Can I buy them standalone to set up or need some sort of server?

  • +2

    The annual (monthly) plans are:
    Basic $49.95 ($4.95) that's only for 1 device.
    Plus $150 ($15) unlimited devices

  • Says your recordings are deleted after 60 days, but what if you save them on a USB drive locally?

If I go on holiday for 3 months and find damage or something stolen, can I go back the whole 3 months, or just the 60 days?

    • +15

If you can afford to go on holidays for 3mths, you can afford wired cameras! :P

      • +2

Tried to get all these comments removed, but it seems the mods are in on the joke at my expense.

I do have wired cameras, but interested in new tech.

It’s not actually a holiday. I have to leave my house for medical reasons and it costs a lot. Is that OK with you and the other 16 people that think that’s funny?

    • If you choose to pay for the plan and get recording saved to the cloud for 60 days, I am pretty sure you can save individual recordings to your phone etc at any time during those 60 days, thus keeping them forever.
They just won't be accessible through the Blink ecosystem - but you will still have them.

      • I was wondering what the options were if you don't have a plan. Is there remote access to the stuff on the drive so if you get a message an event has happened, can you access it and possibly save it indefinitely. Same kind of thing you could do with a conventional system.

I can understand them limiting space used on the cloud version, but you'd think a local hard drive stored one, should be up to you how long you keep stuff.

        • Yes, you can save footage to a card in the Sync module and if you are watching live view then you could always screen record from your phone I suppose.

  • Any generic transport?

  • +3

How do these compare to the Eufy cams?

While I like the concept of the Eufy cams, I found the range from their camera to the homebase unit to be appalling (i.e. not for large houses or multiple walls).

  • So do these store anything without a subscription plan?

edit - found answer - requires sync module and USB

  • +1

Also the powered Mini 2 cameras are $35 (2 for $50). So you could get a 5 camera system for $175 (if you can plug in 4 of the cameras).

  • +3

Too expensive fornits performance and quality. There are plenty of better options like TP Link Tapo, Reolink and Ring available.

    • +1

any examples in this price range? maybe share links

  • If the sync module can support up to 10 devices, why do you need one with each camera?
    https://support.blinkforhome.com/en_GB/using-your-sync-modul…

    • I don't think you do. One sync for up to 10 cameras.

  • will this work with Google environment?

    • will have to ask Sundar Pichai

  • Whats the point of getting a security camera if you have to pay extra because they cant figure out how to do local or network storage?

Also works with iSpy so I guess thats a bonus. (https://www.ispyconnect.com/camera/blink)

    • +1

I think it does use local storage - USB with the sync thingy

      • Yeah, extra.

  • 2 years battery life….how is it possible it will lasting two years??

    • +9

2 years standby mode maybe. In crawlspace with no activity ever.

    • +1

My Eufycam Pro 2K cameras claim 1 year battery life, and they are usually on-point (usually at least 9 months) - that's with multiple detections every day.

  • +11

I'm slowly replacing all these Blink cameras in my house with Reolink ones.

No matter how much they discount, in long term you still pay a lot more than other cameras that offer the same thing. Without subscription, this camera only offers basic "motion detection" which cause a lot of false alarms. You can store videos locally but by the time you can load them remotely, whatever needed your attention was already gone.

Reolink cameras tick all the checkboxes for me. Good AI detection, support local-only mode, has good deals throughout the year, strong integration with smart home solutions.

    • I presumed, you will start off by buying the hub and slowly built up the system from there?

      • I'm trying to avoid the Hub until I can't. I'm running Home Assistant on an old Intel NUC box. So far it does everything I need.

It's a bit tricky to integrate the battery-powered camera (Argus series), but it's possible with the neolink library.

        • Zeppy is the reason because of the price of the hub or do you have any other reason?

          • @Reverbs: It's about the features. The Hub is for better local storage and integration with smart home. I already have NAS and Home Assistant which cover most of the features of Hub. The most compelling reason for me to get a Hub is the integration with their battery-powered cameras. Those things don't expose RTSP feed and their APIs are private so I have to rely on some hacks for Home Assitant to work. When/if those hacks stop working, I need to seriously consider the Hub.

            • @zeppy: Thanks, I don't have proper cabling and will need to buy several wireless camera. I might go down to the path of buying the hub.

    • Currently I have a mix of Ring and Reolink cameras. Reolink cannot send motion detection alerts to Alexa but Ring can. If you are looking for creating Alexa routines triggered by motion alerts then avoid Reolink. Also the video feed from Reolink takes a bit more time to load on echo show devices compared to ring. However Ring requires subscription but on Reolink you have the option of local storage and also cheaper solar options.

      • +1

It's not trivial, but if you already invested in home automation, you can send notifications from Reolink -> Home Assistant -> Alexa.

  • @zeppy can you please share a link for the reolink product?

    • For wired cameras, I used RLC-820A and RLC-520A (the A at the end means AI, which means it support person/pet/vehicle instead of just motion). For battery-powered, I use Argus 3.

  • +5

Am I being dumb here or if you buy 1 Camera for $75 then get an add-on camera for $60, doesn't that come out at $135 and therefore 3 Cameras is $195.

    Or am I missing something??

    • You're spot on!

    • Somebody add this into the post!

    • Or buy 2x $75 and sell one of the module hubs for more profit? Not sure if an easy sale.

  • +1

Paying $60-75 per camera and then an additional $150 per year to achieve basic functionality that you'd want from any security camera seems utterly ludicrous to me. You're far better off investing in someone from the outset that either doesn't use a subscription service or allows you to host locally.

    • Save and share clips — No monthly fees required when using local video storage functionality with the Sync Module 2 (included) and a USB drive (sold separately).

This line in the description says you can host locally without subscription.

      • +2

Without a subscription, features are very limited based on this table i.e. only motion but not person detection; live streaming but not recording; hence, only clips will be saved to the usb stick. That might be good enough for some/many people to set and forget. For security, person detection is recommended as the motion is not reliable. Some people use it for plant monitoring which is ok.

With the upsized cashback, I think I'll give it a try for the 2-year long battery life. The blink mini 2 is also on sale for $50 for 2pk. $125 in total for 3 cameras with a local recording hub is a good start for those who want an entry level security camera system.

        • Thanks for the clarification. New to the market for security cameras.

  • +2

Not sure if the app has been updated to allow for deleting files from local storage (USB). Previously, the USB had to be disconnected, plugged to a computer and manually deleted from there. Which sucks IMHO

    • I've just setup my blink system and I can confirm that you are able to delete the files from the app.

  • For the price, I find Wyze Cam V3 with micro SD works great. Excellent night vision. It is not wireless though.

  • Am wondering if these or any security cams could work without wifi? The building I'm wanting to protect doesn't have a connection.

    • No. These are WiFi only cams.
No 12V DC cable or PoE support.

  • If I wanted to use the cameras in 2 homes (a few streets apart) It sounds like i will need to buy 2 separate packs right so that they come with the sync module each. It looks like all the packs only come with 1 module. Maybe 3 cameras per home, so if i was going to get this i should get 1 5 pack and 1 solo pack basically.

  • Can you use the cashback sites with this amazon device as a amazon device cashback?

  • +3

I use Reolink Argus pro 3 wireless cams. $98 at the moment. 2k rather 1080p image. Solar power option. Connect direct to wifi so no separate module required. Onboard person detection and sd storage works well. Free cloud for 1 device, or I think it’s about us$50 for five devices. 3m battery maybe. https://reolink.com/au/product/argus-3-pro/?attribute_pa_ver…

  • Damn, i just received these, still unopened and now there is a much better cashback option, should i return these and reorder them?
