Do You Replace Broken Eggs in a Carton?

I saw this article on news.com.au - Gross supermarket trend has Coles, Woolies and Aldi shoppers fuming

What do you do?

For the record, I never replace broken eggs but instead open a new carton and only buy it if all eggs are unbroken.

I swear I saw a facebook group for egg swappers…..

    • +3

Not the type of eggs you're thinking about

      • LMAO! Nice one. I very much like.

  • Only did it once cause I was desperate for eggs, If there are only a few boxes left and majority are broken, I get the same brand and size and replace them.

But ive seen people replace eggs with different brands and sizes, that's messed up.

well yer as JV said, thats called theft

  • I did read once that if there is a broken egg in the carton then they throw away the whole carton

The thing I find strange is that my local Aldi hardly ever has eggs these days, however the Asian grocer next door where I get all my fruit and veg always has heaps in a range of sizes

    • Same, it's been WEEKS, no eggs!

    • That's because eggs are usually $8+ at Asian grocers where I live. Where aldi is around $5.

    • Supply vs demand

  • Eggcellent thread.

News.com.au bottom tier trash article made up from what one random goose posted on Facebook, and twisted to be a nationwide egg swapping pandemic.

      Standard

    • This comment wins the thread

    • Clearly necessity is the mother of motivation, if you can just pick up the next dozen it's easier to just leave the one with the broken egg aside, if they are down to the last few cartons and they all have one broken one, people are swapping. This doesn't even need to be a question, the 500 odd that voted they don't swap definitely swap in this situatinon

  • Normally I open and check for broken ones and if there are any I just swap for another carton. Unfortunately due to the shortage of eggs at the moment you have to take what you can get so instead of buying half a dozen as normal (I am single) I had to buy eighteen instead.

As I'm off work for a few weeks due to injury I have decided to try different options, including baking, rather than just throwing the unused ones out.

  • what an eggciting time of our lives

  • Bro stop doing this pls

  • News.com making an issue out of nothing, which then leads to more people doing it. Just like toilet paper during covid.

Why is this a problem? What's the difference between swapping eggs around or leaving the box aside and getting another one?

Swapping eggs around means all the bad eggs get set aside in one box and the good eggs get sold and minimum wastage. This is usually necessary at the end of the day when most of the boxes are sold and pickings are slim.

Otherwise there will be multiple boxes of eggs unsold with majority good eggs in them

    • You're assuming the person swapping is putting all the bad ones into the one carton but in reality the bad egg just goes into another good cartoon.

      • +3

Yea eventually the good ones from there replace bad ones and then one carton becomes the bad eggs carton

        • +2

And that is the carton the Uber driver picks up for @capslock

  • Obviously this is only happening because there is an egg shortage, people usually swap them out, but sometimes they will just throw them onto the shelf.

Long story short, it means there is at least one sale, and up to four sales, rather than no sale if there are five egg cartons with broken eggs in them. (These cartons containing broken eggs are ironically discounted the next day at a deep discount, but the new method the shoppers are using is actually helping the supermarket maintain higher margins as people ultimately end up paying full price.)

Obviously they just need to put a bin and a sign up to tell people to throw away those broken eggs.

  • First world problems. Annoying and shouldn't be happening but there are bigger problems gripping humanity once we get outside our bubbles which will no doubt bust one day.

    • agreed. We should ignore all problems but the top 3 world problems, and work our way down from there.

  • I once saw a young woman being chastised by a staff member for swapping out eggs from a reduced close to use by date carton of eggs to an ordinary one. As soon as the staff member left she continued to do it. Rude.

    • What an A hole.

Can’t blame the shop as they can’t control people.

I’ve never seen eggs discounted due to short expiration. They have like a 6 week shelf life.

There's been an unspoken thing in a couple of supermarkets I've been in where a carton is left open, to show that this contains broken eggs, with a possible further option that this is the one you sub broken ones into in exchange for good ones. I assume people sticking to brands and sizes because I do.

This is ultimately on the supermarket though, if they want to prevent this they can invest in more secure packaging, or improve their egg handling.

    • One thing i like about costco is this.. its mostly shrink wrapped (the ones i buy) and the eggs are cleaner

I will never ever understand why people even bother checking. I can't remember last time I had a broken egg in a carton. Has to be over 10 years. What are the odds?

    • 1 carton out of 4 for cheapest eggs, and 1 out of 6 for free range

      • source? I must be the luckiest person alive, if, if, you are right. Also, the idea of fiddling with eggs and then going about your business rhymes with salmonella to me.

    • +1

Unfortunately it happened quite a few times.

Could have cracked anywhere after it’s been in placed in the carton.

It makes a mess and sometimes it starts leaking in the car when you start moving it around.

These days I check each box. If broken Ieave the lid open and get another box.

If there’s say multiple cartons of cracked eggs and there’s no other good cartons left, I’ll start swapping eggs.

I don’t think this article is pointing out a problem with swapping broken eggs. The issue is dumping broken ones out of a carton just rotting in the shelves.

    That IS gross.

Swapping eggs is otherwise much of a muchness.

  • I saw an older lady open multiple cartons of eggs and were swapping perfectly good eggs, so that she could create one carton of the largest size eggs for her to buy.

    • She’s an arsehole but people don’t call out the behaviour of older people.

I've seen someone replacing eggs eggsactly zero times.

  • Crack them on the counter FIRST ymmv.

The trouble with a cracked or broken egg in the carton, is not just losing that one egg.
The broken egg juices left behind stick to the cardboard, and can contaminate the other eggs with samonella, depending on how you handle it. For food safety, it's best to grab a different carton.

    • +1

Mmmmmmmm…… poached eggs and smoked samonella……

On the topic of eggs, why they hell supermarkets start placing them in the fridge?

    • -1

If they've got space why not?

      • pastreurisation

    • What?

  • +2

If there are plenty of cartons available i get a different one, if there are only a few, then i swap the broken one or 2 with one that’s not. Swapping won’t leave any eggs lying outside their cartons as in the photos of this post so i don’t know if that’s such a wrong thing to do 🤷‍♂️.

  • +1

If everyone swapped them properly, there would be 1 or at most, few cartons per day with broken eggs. Then the carton(s) with broken eggs get thrown out. So there shouldn't be an issue with swapping broken eggs.

  • Imagine having a life so miserable that you risk losing dignity and embarrassment for swapping out slightly different sized eggs

Just let them have it imo…they are hurting somewhere else

  • Wow there's 78 votes for replacing eggs, I never knew it was a thing, its pretty hard to imagine.

  • Used to check and swap into an open carton, collecting damaged for convenience of everyone.

Now when home, if any damaged, take a photo with docket, & show photo next week to receive a Refund or a Replacement…Free. Works a treat with delivery too.

That equates to on average 3 free cartons $18 per year…. absolute bargain thanks to Coles 100% Satisfaction guarantee.

If the average WW had a better range and a trolley was cheaper on average and more often, they give a Refund AND a Replacement.

So, loosing a few eggs, is a bonus when using Store brand.
