ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 Wi-Fi 6 Tri-Band Mesh Router System (2-Pack) $569 + Delivery ($0 to Metro Areas/ C&C/ in-Store) + SC @ Scorptec

100

Asus Zenwifi XT8 - currently $569 with free shipping from Scorptec. I only ever see the overseas models this cheap, and I understand the Australian model is better than the overseas models (from the discussions I have seen on other posts about them).

Unsure if it is an all time low price. Seems good though.

  • worth upgrading from XD6s?

I love my German versions - work just fine in a normal house to the ROG router.
If I didnt have any - I'd jump, but over the XD6's…..hmm hard call - perhaps wait for Wifi 7 versions?

      • Why do you use the ROG router on top of these? Doesnt the XT8 act as a router?

        • +1

Just for overkill mostly - ROG in front of house plugged to the NBN / 1x XT8 in middle / 1x in Back……

No, upgrade to a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router if your devices are capable of it.

      here's a comparison review from 3yrs ago

      https://dongknows.com/asus-zenwifi-xd6-vs-xt8-review/

  • i paid less then $550 thru Wireless1 mid 2021.

They're great, but way too expensive for old tech at this price. The XT9's have been out for ~18mths and they're $530 from Amazon Germany

Is the German version the same as the AU version?

I was told the not to buy the UK version on Amazon as it was inferior to AU version

      • I recall the same thing. Was going to look back on some previous posts to see if there was reasoning behind it

      • i believe the German one is essentially the same as the AU one. The UK one had some wireless backhaul bands (160mhz) disabled in hardware due to conflicting with weather radar systems I believe.

  • I would pick 3 pack TPLINK XE75 over this

Have been considering these for a long time but in the end pulled the trigger on Ubiquiti and am very happy; no regrets!

My setup is Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra plus two access points U6+. Cost me cheaper than these (around $510).

Just wanted to share in case anyone is in the same situation.

I did this but instead with a U7 Pro Max AP and I could not be happier over this last month.

For anyone else considering this, give it a pass since you're better of doing Ubiquiti setup that scales better in the future. If you look on forums, there is enough around the XT8s bad firmware that Asus pushes out that people are recommended to run Merlin for better reliability and performance.

In my personal experience, I had to change over to Merlin after a bad firmware update through the official channels. It was working fine on Merlin until all of sudden the mesh AP dropped from the main and wouldn't reconnect. In the past, i've been able to reset and readopt the mesh AP, but even after performing a emergency firmware update and putting both back on the official firmware channel it wouldn't come back to life. This behaviour had been going on for the 2-3 years that I owned it but never have I had it become a brick.

Wait for Wireless1 eBay to have deals on Ubiquiti products and pick from their product line instead. Ubiquiti UI is far more refined than Asus as well and gives you way better insights on your environment and overall control. If you have data points in your house you should have no issue as Ubiquiti products are meant to be deployed via PoE/+. You can still mesh them but it's not recommended as it cuts your performance quite a bit as there is no dedicated backhaul. Either way, they have options such as the U6-LR to cover larger homes where you might not be able to run ethernet in your walls.

Hopefully this helps for any buyers considering the XT8s.

  • After finally being able to get NBN FTTP, I got the German version of these earlier this year to replace my old Google Wi-Fi mesh expecting much better Wi-Fi speeds. The first thing I noticed were a few blind spots in my home that I never had with the old Google Wi-Fi. But worse was the reduced speed I was getting from the same locations. Also, while my phone stays connected to my Google Wi-Fi after leaving the house and walking a good 40 meters away, the Asus XT8 had no signal at all at the end of our short driveway.
It was then I started reading about the possible reduced power of German/European Wi-Fi routers and the possible reduced frequencies used so I returned them and am back using my old Google Wi-Fi.
I would be tempted to try the Australian version of these because the reviews are good and I liked the App to configure them etc. but I don't want something worse than my old Google Wi-Fi mesh.
