Thanks to NoCure for the Original Coupon Deal

Unlike most previous Spotlight coupons this one allowed me to apply it to a sewing machine. Since it's over $120 it qualifies for free delivery or you can do click & collect. My daughter has been looking for one to learn on and this seems to have decent reviews of all the cheapest models.

    Is it heavy ?

    • If you buy it then no.
But if you borrow someone's? No data to extrapolate from…

    • Ma's machine was like an anvil. You drop that f88ker on your foot it gonna hurt!

  • Is there any problem with website because whenever I am trying to open it showing me the message ( Max challenge attempts exceeded. Please refresh the page to try again!)

    • same happens to me through firefox since a few weeks ago, but chrome with adblocker disabled worked ok first try.

I think i got it to work on firefox once by deleting all cache and cookies for the site.

  • been looking at some sewing machines from spotlight, but sadly most of the affordable ones have very bad reviews :(

That’s what my daughter found as well, with most reviews for cheaper machines along the lines of, “This really suxx!!” She said she found another site (not sure where, though) that had some for this machine which were actually mostly sensible. My guess is if you don’t have high expectations then you shouldn’t be too disappointed.

      • Thought the same. Maybe people are experienced sewers, who tried this cheap ones, and of course they won't compare to a $1000 machin,e but are good for your add job here and there.

If you're looking for something inexpensive keep your eye on marketplace for the Janome MyExcel or Decor. They are mechanical machines, have a metal frame and the model has been around for around 30 years. They were THE machine to have in the 90's so there is heaps for them around as family clear out homes and often only $100-150. Look for the newer ones that have the modern Janome logo and the generic foot and power supply if you can - the older ones have a proprietary plug that breaks with age and is hard to find to replace. You can still even buy a MyExcel brand new for around $600. I've got my Nana's old one which she bought when I was in primary school and I'm now 40 and it still gets used regularly. My everyday machine is a fancier one but no way will I part with my MyExcel!

The Elna mechanical ones (like the EL2000) from Spotlight are reasonably well liked as well and often go down to around $150. Be aware that often with the starter machines the reviews are skewed bad because honestly, it's beginners using them and 95% off the time it's user error. A quick read of the reviews on spotlight has me banging my head. Good luck!

Thanks for taking the time to explain it so well! My mum is visiting us from overseas and she used to sew quite a lot, so i'm looking forward to her teaching me and my oldest kid how to use it, and spend some quality time together

  • What about something like this OP? https://www.kmart.com.au/product/multi-function-sewing-machi…

Annoyingly it's not available in Tasmania

Reviews are solid, it looks small and unfussy which is what a beginner needs.

    • I’m far from an expert but my main concern would be size, this looks very small. But, if all you want is something to learn some basic stitches then it might be okay. Don’t expect to create a quilting masterpiece, though.

      • Maybe check it out instore and see what you think. Kmart is pretty good with returns if not 'fit for purpose'.

With sewing machines it seems new one - go expensive or cheap (not mid)

The cost of servicing is definitely something you need to budget for!

I guess its a bit like musical instruments
