  • Is this thing decent? Can it defrost evenly and reheat effectively?

    • would also be interested in knowing.

    • +4

My partner and I have been very happy with it. It’s by far the best microwave we’ve ever used for defrosting meat. Does it evenly without cooking the edges.

      Check the reviews:
      https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/lg-ms2336db

One of them is mine. I had it for 18 months before it started rusting inside. You'll see quite a few reviews with the same problems for the Neochef models.
Even though it was under warranty, LG customer service claimed it was my fault.

I had to quickly replace it with a $50 kmart microwave while dealing with LG (and hoping for a repair) and I am pretty sure it will outlast the LG .

      • +2

Same issue for me with the rust, would never purchase an LG microwave again

      • +1

Mine has started rusting as well! 3 years old.

      • +11

I've had mine at least 5 years and zero rust. I do leave the door open after using it to make sure it's dry before closing it again. Much the same as my front load washing machine… leave the door open after use so it doesn't get mould.

        • +5

I've had mine for 5 years and no rust either. I also leave the door open.

        • For a long-ish while I didn't leave mine open ever. Then, noticing all the condensation inside, I wiped it down with an OzB Approved Viva paper towel and noticed a grey residue. Was it mold? Or was it the paint coming off due to being wet for so long?

I hate leaving doors open, but yeah, with this microwave it's a must.

          • +3

@WorstAgreeableRadish: I usually only leave mine slightly ajar a few cm not wide open. And I close it an hour or two later.

I think it's best practice with any product that gets damp inside during use.

      • +4

The tip is to leave the door open for a minute or so after every use. Rust wouldn't be an issue then.

      • +1

        same with me.

      • same here (rust that is)

    • +5

I don’t have this exact model (our door is slightly different), but it is a 23L Neochef, and in terms of cooking we don’t have any complaints. Defrosting is as good as any microwave I’ve used (which is to say it’s fine, although for large pieces of meat I prefer using our sous vide circulator), and reheating is no problem. It’s also very good at gentler stuff like softening a block of butter that’s just come out of the fridge, or melting chocolate.

      But it has three drawbacks:

The fans are aggressive and stay on for a few minutes after it’s been used for heating something substantial. Not a huge issue, but worse keeping in mind.

It’s not particularly well shielded. For me, that means if I’m listening to a podcast on my AirPods then the signal can drop if I’m standing near the microwave while it’s operating. I’ve heard stories from people who say it kills their wifi and I believe it. That hasn’t been the case for us, however. Your mileage may vary based on where it sits in relation to your router and other wifi enabled appliances.

Finally, the beeping. Once it’s done cooking something it beeps, then it beeps again a few minutes later, then again a few minutes later, then AGAIN. It’s annoying. The only way to stop it is to open the door, but in those cases where you want to leave something to cool down a little before taking out of the microwave, it’s gets annoying. You can turn off the beeps altogether, but that’s not what I want either. I’d love it if you could set it to only beep ONCE when the cooking is finished, but that’s not possible.

None of those are dealbreakers for me, and I think it’s cooking performance, compact size and clean looks outweighs the negatives. If it caused us wifi issues it would go straight back to the store, so maybe just keep the box handy if you find that’s the case for you.

Panasonics are equally guilty on the interference front. Ask me how I know.

        • +3

          No, I'm ok thanks.

        • I have a Panasonic microwave and confirm it disrupts WiFi lol

        • +1

I can confirm, my Panasonic interrupts my YouTube watching whilst heating up my milk.
Not only YouTube, but Netflix as well.

      • You can turn off the sounds.

        • +4

brayhouse did mention that in the second last paragraph; the problem is it'll turn off all the sounds all of the time.

The finished tone should only play once. Otherwise it's like kids asking "are we there yet? are we there yet?"

        • The other problem is that when you do turn the sounds off it will turn them back on again every time you switch the power off/on (which you have to do to change the time on it).

      • -2

The beeping is a reminder in case you forget. All you need to do is quickly open the door and then close it again. It won’t beep after you do that.

This is really not an issue.

        • This is really not an issue.

For you, and the way you use your microwave.

But not everyone is you. Not everyone is standing near the microwave when it's done.

There's a reason why "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" is a thing.

      • My god, the constant reminder beeps get annoying real quick. If there's any consolation, you can also press "Cancel" to stop the beeping instead of having to open the door.

    • Mine blew up twice.

upvote because i just saw this legend at the ozb 18th bday party in Darlinghurst

    • +11

Bottle of wine deep and still posts microwave deal.

  • +1

Hang on why is this hated? Its by far the best microwave in its price range out there. Durable, fits in plenty of places.

    • I agree but the Sharp and Panasonic fanboys/girls' hate seems to be related to the fact that it has in the past interfered with 2.4ghz band wifi. Guess I will find out for myself when shipped.

      • I bought a Panasonic inverter recently to avoid this exact reason. But it still cuts my wifi and my food heats unevenly but instead from bottom up. So the top stays cold but the bottom is hot…

        • I believe they started winding the magnetron’s with aluminium instead of copper to save money across a lot of previously reliable and well built Japanese brands that are all made out of country now.
You are better off trying to buy something good secondhand now , or perhaps picking up at the next council clean up.
The old ones if you can find in good Nic, will outlast your grandkids.

    • +3

It was great when it still worked. Purchased one for myself and one for my parents and both died after 2 years (same issue, stopped heating). Got a more expensive Panasonic this time that's still going.

      • +3

My parents have had a Panasonic inverter for about 30 years, still going strong. I just bought one myself the other day.

      • +27

Purchased one…for my parents and both died after 2 years

        This microwave killed your parents!?

        • +1

The parents probably both died of food poisoning when the microwave stopped heating.

      • +1

Same here. Exactly 2 years stopped heating randomly in the middle of microwaving food. It's apparently a known issue. You can get it fixed under warranty but the places that do it can be far and have limited opening times. Not worth my time, I just got a cheap Kmart one that works surprisingly well.

    • We have the larger version and our wifi about 10m away always cuts out for the duration of the cooking time. Not sure if others have the same issue but our cage/frame also rattles constantly and couldn't be fully fixed by tightening the screws.

    • Mine was working great for two years until it randomly sparked while heating. I've read a few reviews on Product review detailing a similar issue. Suffice to say, I didn't want to wait to find out what may happen, so replaced with a cheap Kmart 25L. No frills, gets the job done.

  • +3

the only downside I have found is when it's being used, it plays havoc with Bluetooth devices

  • Have the older 25L version for years. Last week the magnetron finally broke down, took it for repairs and was charged $88 for a 15 min job 😅

    • Magnetron has 10 yrs warranty. I assume yours is older then 10 yrs.

      • +2

Still less than 10 years. The $88 was apparently "labour fee".

        • lol that's rubbish. You were better off getting a new one rather than paying $88 for repair.

        • +2

Pretty sure warranty is supposed to cover all fees, including labour and shipping and whatnot.

          • @xrailgun: Negative. Magnetron replacement is free but have to pay labour. Can confirm.

            • @spy: They didn't replace it free, then

    • My Sharp microwave does not heat up the food anymore but operates normally, I think that it's a faulty magnetron. Where did you get yours repaired?

      • +1

LG service centre referred me to Service Scene in Mt Waverley.

  • +2

Best microwave I've used, very powerful but mostly run it at 80% power. The defrost by weight function is fantastic. It does kill the WiFi for the few minutes it runs but the jolly tunes that it plays more than make up for it.

    • +2

It shouldn't kill the wifi, that's def not normal.

      • +4

It is very normal for unshielded microwaves, as microwave ovens and 2.4GHz WiFi (and Bluetooth) operate in the exact same space in the air.

The problem is, most microwave ovens are shielded much better than these NeoChefs.

        • You should check the box , you may have purchased the LG drone Jammer instead . This is an easy mistake to make as the both look similar but where it should say microwave on the box specifically it saysAnti-DroneHi-Burst Microwave Jammer in the 2.4-10 mega hertz’s range.
I believe this came from their old factory in North Korea .
There should also have been a rad meter in box , so go ahead and clip that to the front of your shirt .

        • Does that mean this microwave is actually a health hazard - if it wrecks havok on Wifi, then it must be affecting humans?

          • +2

            @montorola: Don't worry, humans aren't wifi.

      • +1

Why would it not be normal?

  • Have had mine for over 4 years now, no problems touch wood. Was the only one which fit in my microwave space

  • dont buy. My 42L same model died after 4 years, the mag unit burned out. It seems a common issue as all other LG users complain online.

    • +2

      Yep this happened to me

    • +2

The magnatron in my LG Neochef (bigger model) has burnt out twice. It's covered by a 10 yr warranty but only the part, so you have to take it to an authorised repairer and pay for labour, which I think was $50 or so. But currently it's sitting on my garage floor because I can't be stuffed repairing it again.

    • Mine died only after a few years. Happened during covid when finding a replacement was hard.

All I could get was the cheapest model Kmart sells. Which is still going strong.

    • +4

It seems a common issue as all other LG users complain online.

You have to keep in mind that you're only hearing from people who have problems. There are plenty of people who have no problems at all, they just don't go look for an online forum to write a post saying "My oven is 5 years old and it's still working".

    • +1

Same thing happened to mine - just months out of warranty. LG wanted me to take it to them and pay $$$ just to be assessed. Was cheaper, quicker & easier to buy a new microwave.

  • +1

Not sure the best microwave although the LG brand, mine is over 1 year already have rust inside and missing digital displace

  • +1

    This is not ATL.
    It was $118.40 at 2018.

  • +1

Still got mine going 5 years strong no issues.

    • +1

Same, got the 42L no issues so far.

  • +3

Similar issue here after 2 years. Rust inside and magnetron is gone. LG "service" non-existent. Taking it up with retailer and will be taking it to NCAT as next step as this is just ridiculous.

  • How many Watts is it?

    • +2

It depends how many people are in the house. "What the heck happened to the internet?"

  • +2

    Showing as $219 for me

  • Temporarily out of stock and the price is $219

  • +1

This machine is a Wifi jammer

  • +8

With my 42L unit, the problem isn't shielding. It just spreads its interference out over more channels. I also measured a Sharp microwave and as you can see the interference is concentrated on the higher 2.4GHz channels (10-11). If your wifi was on channel 11 the Sharp would kill it too.

You can see in the measurements that channel 1 is clear with the LG. I moved my 2.4GHz wifi to that channel and don't have disconnection problems. YMMV.

Someone mentioned even heating; I compared the LG to a Sharp and the LG is more even. I did forget to lock the span so do note the measured temperatures.

I did also measure a flatbed Panasonic microwave but the paste wasn't the most consistent so it's not a fair comparison. It does show greater signs of unevenness though.

    • Great analysis! Do you know if zigbee devices channels will be affected the same way?
Can't move zigbee below 10 unfortunately

      • +1

Yup they will be affected the same way. WiFi channel numbers are different to Zigbee channel numbers though. In my case using a lower channel (11-14) would help.

    • One wonders where a DIY faraday cage might work to contain this madness?

  • I'm hoping Black Friday will be kind for deals on this machine.

  • Great microwave, there one at my work and the food heats up nicely.

  • It's well priced, but the heatinf is crappily slow

  • Great priced microwave, works very well (fast and even) and we dont experience the wifi/bluetooth issues that others complain about.
Happy tune when food ready to eat.

  • Had to replace it under warranty and it still sometimes heats up food and sometimes doesn't.
I have no idea what is happening with it or why it is acting up.
We use ours like 10-20 times a day.
