Not sure how many people are excited about this Phone. Looks nice. I ordered one. Let's see how functional it is. It is being sent from Amazon Germany.

I saw the price on Google search for the International version cheaper at Ali Express for $408.69, but when I click the link, the price jacks up. On JB-Hifi it was on special for $439 about 2 months ago.

international phones are a risk now of being banned in aus…

    • +5

Agreed… I have two phones that support all Optus 4G and 5G bands but have been blacklisted.

    • i haven't follow mobile news for a while, what is the optus ban you guys talking about?

      • +5

Basically every phone that is not a flagship sold in AU retailers has been banned since 3g shutdown. You can read about it here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/873158

        • so you mean even those support 4g/5g phones are banned?
i will read that post, don't know why people neg me.

          • +5

@ce5himm: Yeah. Even new Xiaomi 14s that cost $2.5K have been banned. It's not about the capability of the phone at this point, the phone may well comply with all legislative requirements; that is not how they are being blacklisted or whitelisted - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are "guessing" about a phone's capabilities - and they just so happen to be guessing that they phones they sell all work perfectly while the phones sold elsewhere dont work - which is a huge coinkydink!

ok just read that, so one more reason not buying import model.

        • +3

Wow, was not aware of this. Does that mean every tourist visiting Australia cannot use their phone with an Australian sim?

          • +2

@monkeyjaja: My understanding is tourists have a 90 day exemption. I don't exactly know how this is realised, though. The reason you haven't heard is the media has been doing its best to cover it up despite the estimates being 270,000 affected devices. I have seen ONE story on ABC and that's it so far, which is absolutely crazy. (it can be found here FYI: https://amp.abc.net.au/article/104541440 )

            • +1

@Iggemo: This is very confusing. They say if you have 4G/5G phones with Australian bands, you are ok. But, in reality, they still could be blocked. Do they just blacklist all overseas IMEI? If so,they should just inform us that, just like in Indonesia. I thought was silly for blacklisting overseas IMEI. I can't believe we go to the same route like Indonesia.

          • @monkeyjaja: That’s the issue, many tourists are entering the country and just outright get no reception due to their phone not being listed as compatible and being blocked.

          • +1

@monkeyjaja: never know and nobody can tell plus nowhere to check. may work on one of the 3 carriers, and blocked by another, or works in the first couple of days, and been blocked for no reason.

        • +4

This doesn’t affect me but it’s still upsetting and it just feels illegal and unfair for no reason.

    • Can confirm that this is actively happening. My old OnePlus 5T and 6T have both stopped working on Australian networks :(

Not to mention double storage. Well worth the extra $80

  • +2

Good luck mate i hope it works. I need to buy a new phone to replace the Redmi Note 9 the scummy telcos have banned but i'm gonna wait a while till the dust settles and hopefully there's some clarity about which phones will and wont work.

  • +1

note that this phone doesn't support esim(good for travelling)

    • +5

No phones at this price point support e-sim except for Motorola's. It's kinda expected for this phone to not have an e-sim

    • Are you saying that it doesn't support esim and thus good for traveling? How so?

      • nah, meant to say esim itself is good for travelling when you need 2 sims.

        • Nothing phones have two sim slots.

  • +8

So the same phone being sold at JB Hifi for $100 more will work, but this may not, just cos its an international model and the telcos may detect that? Why is our government so regressive and happy to bend over for corporations …

    • +9

probably this policy is to keep mr harvey and mr jbhf happy, angus.

    • +3

I mean you can get a Redmi Note 13 Pro for 360 from Ali but the same phone is 500-600 at JB Hi Fi, guess which one will work ? It is scummy scumbaggery for sure, very anti-consumer and anti-competitive.

      • what happen if you opened it and it's not working, can we return for refund. for ali, it's unlikely. how about amazon.

        • Well this is precisely why i would not be buying any phones from overseas right now. I'm not going to find out the hard way and would advise against it for others too..

I'm hoping at some stage there is actually a viewable list of devices that will work and those that won't rather than just a TAC/IMEI checker (which itself is entirely misleading and gives arbitrary results) because no Aussie can currently have any confidence any phone they buy will work - and that remains true even WITH stores like JB let alone online.

          • @Iggemo: i just read some iphones are blocked too. i wonder how about those people bought a iphone 12 mini last time from amaysim. i think a lot of ozbargainers got that.

            • @ce5himm: For iPhones it only really affects North American models as they use a different modem to the Australian/International ones

    • +1

So the same phone being sold at JB Hifi for $100 more will work

How do you know it's the same phone?

Only if you compared box photos between the one sold at JB versus this German deal could you be sure because if the model numbers are different eg. one is AU and the other is EU, they're not the same phone

Compliance with the various ACMA laws can mean Australian devices have differing antenna setups, band configurations, VoLTE profiles and other customisation requested by Telstra/Optus/Vodafone

      • This is so bullshit, my phone was blocked by Voda this morning, switched to Amaysim everything works.

    • I bought my Nothing Phone 1 from Kogan and that still works fine on Telstra.

I'm currently in Europe and literally about to buy an iPhone in Germany and bring it back to Australia. Now I'm afraid to do so :(

    • +1

dont do it. my iphone 7 which is suppose to be fully compatible but its a UK version is blocked by optus.

      • +1

Oooh gosh, ok then I'm not doing it. This is totally ridiculous. Thanks for sharing.

  • I bought the 256gb nothing2a phone from Kogan. I, am using 2 sim cards Telstra and Optus both work fine

    • I've got my eye on the upcoming nothing2c phone. It's ultra compact and totally clear.
