Tell Me Some Positives of Buying a New Tesla

Looking at current prices of used tesla's and brand new tesla's quiet a huge drop in price from new to old.

I know by owning an EV you save on fuel….but buying them brand new and losing $20,000-$25,000 after 3 years of ownership makes little sense or does it? So my question is.

What do you exactly save?

Are you just making one of the greatest scammers Elon rich or you are actually saving money?

Comments

    • What an over-simplified and ignorant comment

  • We bought a brand new Tesla and as an early adopter we lost a lot of money on depreciation/price reductions. Also, this is our first brand new car so the depreciation was not liked (although expected).

Besides the perks of owning a new car etc., the main pro of owning a new Tesla is knowing that it hasn’t been crashed before and does not have any structural or other (battery or electrical) issues. Carrying my family in a vehicle with batteries under it does have its own inherent risks and I would like to minimise as much of it as I can.

    • +2

Carrying my family in a vehicle with batteries under it does have its own inherent risks

Its true they have their own risks, but the risk is a lot lower than a petrol car catching on fire.

  • Lol

  • I just want the car to drive me to work and home.

    When can we get that?

    • +4

      Public transport does that

  • You may lose $20k-$25k over 3 years of ownership (which isn't much different to any other new car btw) but depending on your financial situation, I saved more than that due to the tax incentives on a federal and state level along with the GST claim.

3 years, should even out to what I "paid"

  • -1

I don't get the Elon hate. He's just a rich guy, doing what he loves, trying to send people to mars, fully invested into new tech(electric cars,AI) and fully devoted to free speech. I can't see anyone having problems with these things. Does it all just come down to partisan politics? You don't like trump, therefore anyone who supports trump is a nazi?

      • lol, do you read the verge when you need to build a PC too?

      • On the Brazil thing, can't blame him for following the law lol

    • +3

He is none of what you said he is.

    • +2

      fully devoted to free speech

He claims that, but his actions are pretty contradictory.

He's definitely devoted to his own free speech. But he's pretty clearly happy to swing the ban hammer when it suits him, and many of his bans have been highly partisan.

If you read Elon's tweets over the past 12 months, he's said some pretty horrendous stuff. I don't blame people for disliking him.

    • +1

People are sheep and believe the mainstream media, just follow the $$$.
Look at those verge posts below, bottom line there is about equal anti-Elon hate on X.
In-fact the Account with the most community noted posts is Elon's!!! Just think about that for a moment, in relation to the people that claim he is against free speech.
He also says he has often said things really stupid and made many many mistakes. How many CEOs are as open as him in relation to mistakes. But not to many CEOs are making an many dumb mistakes..:)

The algorithm is open sourced so view it yourself, the content that was removed breach the Twitter\X content policy, was not removed by Elon. There has been some commercial sensitive content removed by Tesla Lawyers (possibly on his guidance, but that's not related to free speech).

      • Agreed, many of these instances of twitters global censorship seem to come down to actual laws vs the whims of some politian or random group. Elon gos with the laws of the country and ignores random requests by government officials, which was the very thing wrong with twitter in the first place. Democrats were hand selecting their adversaries to be removed.

It's a fine line and Elon seems to be doing alright, banning illegal content and allowing controversial content to be discussed and fact checked by users with community notes, not by your local random authority dictator wannabe.

send people to mars - He won't be sending anyone to Mars. First try moon. Then calculate how far away Mars is. This is the illusion to pump SpaceX and Get govt's money.
fully invested into new tech(electric cars,AI) - He bought Tesla, and got rid of the owner. He didn't invent it. Tesla failed in the AI FSD promise for many years. The breakthrough came from Google.
fully devoted to free speech - He is fully devoted to HIS free speech, not anyone else's. The only reason he became a free speech 'advocate' is during covid, Govt forced to shutdown his facility, and he couldn't say anything he wanted.

      There. Facts.

      • -1

Facts, I don't think you understand what that is. This is a negative, mostly wrong, opinion.

      • -1

You don't understand Musk at all (I don't think many do).

        1) Space X - It is his ideology to get to Mars. It started with getting a plant to grow on Mars, but now it is to get Humans to Mars.
        2) Telsa - He wanted to show the world that Cars could run on batteries. He got push back and ridiculed by the big cars manufacturers. I think this also is from ideological origins.
        3) Free Speech/Twitter(X) - This is a minefield I wish he had avoided and put his efforts elsewhere. There is no winning here. Whenever there is a miss-step, the world is watching , just waiting to pounce.

        • Yes, agree. SpaceX and Tesla. That's how he started, and that's what inspired a lot of people. But now, 10-15 years later, he has morphed into something else. Power and money can change people. With his focus on twitter, politics etc - it's unlikely he'll have the time to deliver on going to Mars. Either intentionally or unintentionally, he is changing from the person who was admired by many in the beginning.

          • +1

@OkWing99: Absolutely. When he fiest burst onto the scene with tesla and its S, 3, X, Y model lineup, the boring company, Space X and the Falcon Heavy he was considered a bit of a kid with the cool toys that people wanted.

Hes totally lost that and turned into a right wing nut job with delusions of granduer. People have lost a lot of interest in Tesla because the models havent developed (software aside). He hasnt delivered on promises of a cheap model 2 nor autopilot and the Cubertruck is a joke with a lot of problems.

Get a byd. The Tesla batteries are made by byd

    • +2

      Get a byd

An EV is so much more than just the battery.

The Tesla batteries are made by byd

Tesla gets batteries from at least 4 suppliers; Panasonic, LG Chem, CATL and BYD. BYD batteries are primarily fitted to European-made Tesla vehicles out of the Berlin factory.

Australian-delivered Tesla vehicles are made in Shanghai, where they primarily use batteries from CATL.

    • -1

It's about the BMS not the Battery, hence why Tesla always get more range\life out of the same batteries

  • +3

Unless you drive high kms you won't save big $. You pay more for insurance.

Note: I am not pretending or recommending EVs for EVERYONE.
IMO, people get EVs for the convenience, excitement and enjoyment. It's really difficult to go back once you have driven an EV.
Basically no servicing\brakes last many years. Tyres will wear quicker until you settle down, wear is more due to the acceleration.

Model 3, big difference old vs new due to the refresh. The new 3 is soo much better, suspension, noise and tech wise.
Model Y, minimal difference, used is good value, be mindful a refreshed version will be out soon, likely hit early next year.

  • -5

    Panel gaps

  • +5

My previous car costs $100 per week on petrol, my Model 3 now costs $16

I also feel less tired when driving because the EV has very little noise and vibration

  • +2

I have a Triton, Tucson and Model Y. Even after approx 15mths with the Y I still love getting in it every time and the feel of the silent acceleration. Don't claim it suits everyone's needs but it's great for our family. Couldn't care less what anyone else thinks re: the founders political views, etc.

  • My brother and I bought a new Model Y and 3 a few years ago and my mom just got a 2021 Model 3 for less than half of what we paid. Other than some wear and tear on the steering wheel (which is a 15 minute replacement), it's so much of the same that I would definitely go used the next time.

    • What did she pay and how many kms?

      • $32990, 84000km (so puts it just out of warranty). Fairly high mileage but far less moving parts in an EV, and a whole lot of car for that money. It's actually quite a bit quicker than my brother's 2023 Model 3.

        • +1

From a dealership? Thats an amazing price

          • @[Deactivated]: Yep from a dealership in Canberra, they actually shipped it over to Melbourne for no extra cost. Really good price.

  • +4

I have owned a Model Y for about 6 months on novated lease. There is no magic to it they are quiet, quick, comfortable with lots of good tech. Things like controlling the ac on your phone while you go shopping for 15 mins so you return to a cool car, being able to effortlessly browse or watch without any engine on while you wait in the car for any reason. The Autopilot features are very good and does at least 50% of the driving for you so makes trips over an hour pretty relaxed. Lots of more good features and its about 1/5th of the cost to run compared to Petrol without having to go to petrol stations and nothing if you have a decent home solar.

It is not suitable yet for anyone you need a garage really so you can make the charging simple so most apartment blocks etc are not yet there in terms of infrastructure but if you have a home with solar then it just makes sense. They are not amazingly good-looking vehicles (The Model Y anyway) but they are very very functionally well designed. Also whenever I do now drive a normal ICE vehicle (not a performance car) they feel extremely slow and loud.

    • +1

      Good summary

    • How's the Model Y on road trips and going up mountains etc?

  • Here are a few benefits:

Save on Fuel Costs: If you drive frequently, switching to an EV can lead to significant savings on petrol.

Lower Electricity Costs: Charging on an EV-friendly plan can reduce electricity costs when you schedule charging for off-peak hours. Charging on solar is even better.

Reduced Service Costs: EVs have lower maintenance costs. For example, the Tesla Model Y has an average two-year service cost of around $230, compared to $600+ for many other brands, especially luxury ones. Plus, Tesla offers mobile service, so a technician often comes to you, saving time and hassle.

Enhanced Safety and Enjoyment with Automation: Tesla’s Autopilot stands out for its reliability, outperforming the adaptive cruise control in many other mid-tier and luxury cars. For instance, if you’re on the freeway with Autopilot engaged, the system centers your vehicle perfectly. When a large truck pulls up beside you on the left-hand side, Tesla’s software detects it and gently adjusts your position to the right—all while staying in your lane. The real-time responsiveness is remarkable.

Practical Design: Teslas offer a minimalist and intuitive interior that’s hard to leave once you’ve tried it. It’s similar to getting hooked into the iPhone ecosystem; after a while, you appreciate the simplicity and functionality.

Comparable Depreciation: The depreciation on Teslas is similar to that of other vehicles. For a realistic comparison, check the depreciation rates of brands like Honda, Subaru, BMW, and Mercedes.

  • If the purpose of buying a Tesla is to sell it after 3 years, buy a house. If your purpose to by a Tesla is to drive it, then it's a nice car with some decent automation making driving hassle free. Adaptive cruise control + Lane control is one of the best features you'll get. With a little practice, you'll be the laziest driver on the street.

  • Model Y 2021 with 30,000-50,000 kms for 30k is worth a punt and makes it worth it.

    • Model Y was released in Australia in 2022.

EV cannot save on fuel. This is the country's schooling problem: They do not teach kids physics, maths, and literacy and when they are grown up post deals and comments here.
Buying a Tesla giving away money to the psyco + mego duo!

    • +5

EV cannot save on fuel. This is the country's schooling problem: They do not teach kids physics

If you do some investigation youll find that EVs are far more energy efficient. EVs are over 80% energy efficient while petrol cars at best are 30% energy efficient. Petrol engines waste a lot of energy to noise and heat.

Even if you power your EV from coal generated electricity its about the same energy efficiency as a petrol car with the fuel in the tank - so that doesnt include all the energy used in extracting, refining and distributing the fuel.

    • +2

This is the country's schooling problem: They do not teach kids physics, maths, and literacy and when they are grown up post deals and comments here.

      Ok boomer.

Instead of baseless attacks on entire generations of people, why don't you attempt to use your expertise in "physics, maths, and literacy" to explain yourself.

Also, I can assure you they do actually teach all those things at schools these days.

  • I have 2 vehicles still that run on LPG

  • my suggestion would be to compare a brand new ICE car that you could have bought few years ago, to a Tesla of the similar price. And then add all costs to both to the total driving distance you would have done for those years. ICE will have fuel + maitenance, while tesla will likely have slightly more annual insurance, and almost zero maitenance cost compared the ICE.
Ah yes and on top of it all - remove the % of your highest tax bracket for about 75% of total EV cost at the end. If you like add about $10-$15k for a brand new battery replacement at the end of warranty, but don't forget ICE cars may also require costly repairs that many years/miles down the line.

  • +2

If you can access a novated lease through your work, EVs are the cheapest new cars you can buy. My model 3 is less out of pocket than a $40k ICE powered car of similar size.. and the Tesla has way more features than anything in that price bracket.

The convenience and cost savings of charging at home (especially if you have solar) are great.

The car is super quiet, quick and comfortable with a good stereo and every safety feature you can imagine.

Other than Elon being a dick with ears there's not a downside that I've found in six months of ownership and daily driving.

I can't see the benefit of a new vehicle period.

EV or ice. Just buy a 1 or 2 year old car and reap the savings.

    • Yep. It is generally said that cars lose ~10% of their value the moment they are driven off the lot. I bought a 3 year old car with 65k kms on it and it was half the price it was brand new, no brainer.

Much more sustainable to buy one car and drive it into the ground, we live in a very consumerist society where people feel the need to upgrade to a new car every few years or to go buy a brand new one just because a baby is coming along. Most people who do upgrade end up going with an SUV which can often have less rear leg room than a passenger vehicle 🤦‍♂️

    • the benefit of new is that it wasn't used by some other person who would have farted in that car all day long maybe even licked it. :D

  • +1

Just buy a second hand one. The batteries last a very long time. You should be more worried about other parts wear and tear

    • With any modern car, especially tesla, id be most worried about the software no longer being supported. We all know these modern software driven items that eventually end up being obsolete despite still working perfectly fine. Its just the software or server or something that gets switched off and it becomes a brick. Id also be a little concerned that tesla will block things once its second hand. Ive already seem that EV converted classics using tesla motors and tesla batteries cannot use tesla chargers.

Whats next? Cant use the AC because your subscription has expired? Cant use the indicators because they invented a new way to do it and the old hardware cant cope with the new software?

      • -3

I'd also be worried about electronics breaking. Too many dumb electronic components in cars these days. Cars from the 2005-2015 era were the best; no silly touchscreens, not too many fancy electronics that are costly to fix when they malfunction, decent interiors, decent safety features. Cars these days are junk, especially all the "safety features" which just enables laziness IMO.

Why bother turning your head around to check your blind spot when you have blind spot monitoring? Why bother using your obliques and abs to turn your body around to look out the rear window when you have a camera to do it for you? Why bother checking before reversing if you have rear cross traffic alert? Why bother even trying to stay in the lane when you have lane keep assist? Why bother monitoring your speed and distance to the vehicle in front when you can just rely on adaptive cruise? I strongly believe that all these safety (IMO "convenience") features make people worse drivers overall. Nothing beats doing a head check to make sure no car or motorcycle is in your blind spot. The only good convenience features out there are auto headlights and auto wipers, everything else takes laziness too far.

Cant use the indicators because they invented a new way to do it and the old hardware cant cope with the new software?

Tesla also invented that idiotic yoke steering wheel which is a perfect example of "change for the sake of change", just sheer stupidity really.

    🔥

Since a crash on Lake Shore Boulevard took the lives of four young people last month, questions have been swirling about why the victims didn’t get out of their Tesla after it caught fire.

“You couldn’t open the doors,” Harper recalled.

    • My friends BMW iX uses electric door mechanism as well. I suspect Tesla didn't invent the electric door mechanism

      • -1

My friends BMW iX uses electric door mechanism as well.

So you can't manually open the door from inside?

        • +1

You can - there's a lever to manually release the door down in the pocket on iX models.

      • -1

        Tesla invented nothing

    • +1

All Tesla cars have manual door release mechanisms.

      • -1

Why didn't they use it then to escape ?

        • +1

I have no idea - I wasn't there. Perhaps they were unconscious from the impact.

The article says "….neither Tesla nor Toronto’s crash investigators have detailed why the occupants were unable to free themselves of the burning SUV….". The assertion that the door mechanism was to blame has come from elsewhere.

The front door latches on a Model 3/Y are very easy to locate in the armrest, both visually and by feel - my dad uses them every time he gets out of my car, despite me repeatedly asking him not to (it's apparently bad for the frameless window mechanism)

This is not a new phenomenon. Corvettes have been using electric door releases for nearly 20 years. I believe a manual release lever is mandatory in all major markets.

          • @klaw81:

Perhaps they were unconscious from the impact.

or from the smoke from the fire.

Hopefully the coroner will determine the cause.

The survivor did state though that they couldn't open the doors.

      • yer hidden away, how stupid

what is wrong with a normal door handle

        • On the front doors, the manual handle sits just below the electric door button.

For the rear doors, yes they are hidden in the car side door bottle pocket

          • @wiltonson: not a great place in an emergency, especially if those in the back were kids

    • The USA still doesn't have FSD. See all the latest videos where numerous interventions are required. It will still drive down the wrong side of the road on occasion.

The system is slowly getting better, but taking care of all edge cases can be very difficult and time consuming. True FSD without the need to constantly babysit it may be many years away, regardless of Elon's promises that it will be available next year, from 2017 onward.
