provides an extra layer of engine protection
And the zinc additive prevents your nose from getting burnt
Been waiting for this to come back on sale. Thanks.
I have a 2012 Lexus RX450h. I generally use Castrol Edge 5W30 but do you think this would suit as I'm due for a service and have none left.
This will be fine. It’s a great oil, use it in my IS350 and Rx350. I prefer it to Castrol. The oil weight recommendations between these and your engine will be similar (if not the same)
It used to be a 5w30 weight oil until some years ago (hence the extra 10 branding)
Any oil experts around here know how this would compare to the Nulon Apex+ 5W-30 other than the 'Extra ten' is this worth the extra 8 bucks?
Not an expert but what car is it going in?
2013 Forester SJ. Actually calls for 0W-20 however known oil consumption issues have meant using 5W-30 slows this down significantly. This oil shows up as an 'alternative' on the Penrite oil selector.
0W20 is a global catch all. If it's not turbo charged then either will be fine.
Wait for 5W-30 sales, more-sales heading towards summer & stick to a PREMIUM-brand for $30 ish…if patience-permit.
When you try different-brand, be aware of the variation-in-thickness of 5W-30…there IS a range of thickness & observe how they consumed by your 2013-Forester-SJ.
Penrite marketing->'Extra ten'….all Premium-brand have similar gimmick.
@ab c: You would benefit from doing a little reading from the bobistheoilguy site or similar. You would learn that all 5w-30 have the same "thickness" as thats exactly what these numbers describe!
You dont know much about oil.
Im not sure what you imagine a "premium" brand oil is, its far mire important to buy a premium OIL, that is one that meets the specifications for the particular car engine. And certainly the Nulon oil is a premium oil, probably the same base stock as the Penrite with additives sourced from the same source.
@ghosta: Lets say I have tested different-brand & different-viscosity, starting from 20W-50(hint?) to now 5W-30…& even tested 0W-16.
I can-FEEL the difference between Castrol 5W-30 range in my-engine: Edge-A3/B4 vs Magnatec-Stop-Start….same 5W-30 viscosity & same-season, lol.
People think that when they read bobistheoilguy, oil-anaysis etc somehow they expand their knowledge. But often fail to realise that feel, observations etc can validate the marketing-BS & the different-circumstances that writer often don't fully-reveal & hence the suitability for EACH reader's application.
I hope the link below expand readers knowledge.
https://thelubricantoracle.castrol.com/HPLguide/page-templat…I intentional NOT venture into other-topics noted in your-comments 🤔
Btw, can you FEEL the variation in your car-responsiveness(accelerator-pedal) from EACH-day driving: SAME-petrol-batch ? What cause it ?
Also, I help friends changing their engine-oil, including test-drive PRE & POST oil-change…lost-count, lol.Btw, can you FEEL the variation in your car-responsiveness(accelerator-pedal) from EACH-day driving: SAME-petrol-batch ?
Of course not.
In a modern turbo engine, there's no variation in feel between different fuel brands from completely different servos, nevermind from the same batch.

Feel what difference ?
Feel what difference…between Castrol 5W-30 range in my-engine: Edge-A3/B4 vs Magnatec-Stop-Start ?
Castrol 5W-30 thickness: Edge-A3/B4 is always-THICKER than Magnatec-Stop-Start. Be it in engine-breaking, LOUDER engine-noise for COLD-morning-first-start (< 5°C) etc etc
In a modern turbo engine, there's no variation in feel between different fuel brands from completely different servos, nevermind from the same batch.
Weird, my experience IS-different. Assuming that you drive-for-mileage, drive the same stretch-of-roads to work & have similar driving-pattern weekly: calculate the litre/100km from each-tank-refill & NOT the mileage as per noted on your dashboard. Stick to same-octane fuel, minimise turbo-spooling as much as possible & try to keep all-variables-constant (like vs like comparison). Do a few-rounds for EACH-brand & can you notice the 0.04 ish litre/100km GAIN by a PARTICULAR-brand ? Only YOU can prove it YOUR-self.
@ghosta: Reading bobistheoilguy didn't do you much good it seems…
Per SAE J300, a 30 grade oil can range from 9.3 to 12.5 cSt at 100 degrees, a variation of nearly 35%.
So yeah, there can be a significant difference in thickness between different 5w30s.
@Skips: Again another poster who doesnt understand what he is reading. You think that because a measurement of thickness has a numerical difference of "nearly 35%" it is actually in any way meaningful to the properties of the oil in the engine? Its not a linear scale.
Thats probably way over your head. Like old mate who imagines he can feel the difference between oil brands. Thats hilarious.
@ghosta: Of course it's meaningful, viscosity is arguably the most important property of an engine oil.
You don't like being wrong, do you?
@Skips: You are new to all this and struggling to understand the properties of oil.
If you took the time to actually look up the oil recommendation for your vehicle you will note that in nearly a cases the engine is quite tolerant of a range of oil viscosities. In modern engines the additives are far more critical.
But you will probably never understand why.

Agree completely. Don't know why people fuss so much over oil. Any brand which meets the car specs will do the job properly.
@ghosta: 5W-30 Thickness-Test
Visit your local car-store & shake many 5L bottleS of 5W-30 oil. From the FEEL & SOUND, notice a SLIGHT-differences in thickness/watery ?
Include Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 Stop-Start A5 (ACEA-A5 aka long-life) & see if it's on the THINNER-range relative to others ?
Try Repco/SCA/Gulf-Western-Oil 5W-30 & see if it's on the THICKER-range relative to others ?
Gulf-Western-Oil 5W-30 range were tested 9-Nov-24 @ SuperCheap Auto, lol.
Only YOU can prove it for YOUR-self.
@ghosta: VISCOSITY 5W-30: Knowledge-Sharing, lol
1.SAE 30: note permissible flow-rate @100 °C -> https://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/128
2.FACT-CHECK: laboratory-test of 5W-30 oil from 42 brand-model: read '4. Conclusions' & note the VARIATION in the results-> 'Although all of the engine oils tested met the 5W-30 grade standards, the high variability of viscosity measurements needs to be reported. '
https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/13/12/3152Shake a 5L bottle test: 5W-30 @ room-temperature, when ever oil FEEL & SOUND on the THINNER-side, it ALWAYS on the THINNER side @ operating-temp INSIDE my-engine.
I DON'T drive like, lol-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_KBvP0_8Tc&t=2s
For the Gulf-Western-Oil fan, I'll RE-test & ONLY-choose their THINNER-version…watch this space in 6+ months time 🤣
I need ACEA C3 8L, any recommendations ?
OIL-Analysis: anyone who have paid for such test, pls share your experience.
How did it change your behavior ?
Your-application, background etc….detailed-responses pls-> share-knowledge? Thanks.
Good oil for the summer. Cheers
