350 for 128GB? I feel like ram prices are apples extra storage prices in laptops lol

    • +1

Wait till you hear how much 128GB of DDR4-2666 ECC costs…

      • You'd be horrified to know how much I paid for my 4x32gb buffered DDR5 sticks

        • Oh god, BUFFERED?! I though UNBUFFERED is most expensive, since it goes in any UDIMM slot, which is more widespread than RDIMM…

          • @FujinShu: Nah, buffered (registered) costs more, because each module has a extra hardware on it. I see a bunch of capacitors, etc on the RDIMM.

Probably also some economies of scale working against me. It was hard to track down any in stock locally.

            • @idonotknowwhy: I suppose such is the case for DDR5, but for me, searching for DDR4 ECC on ebay gives me a TON of RDIMMs at cheap prices and UDIMMs being expensive, sometimes rivalling new prices at places like Mwave.

    Do I need it?
    No
    Do I want it?
    Yes

    • +6

      This is the way.

  • Aw man, i thought this was ddr5

  • +1

    I'm after DDR4 2666MHz, can't find a deal on it :/

    • +10

ram is downwards compatible and you can grab these and they will automatically 'throttle' to run at the 2666mhz if your system doesnt support any higher

      • Ahh, Good to know that, thanks

      • +5

this kit will run at either 2133 (default) or 3200 (xmp profile), not 2666 except a few specific scenario

3200mbps is xmp profile (overclocking profile), unless you specifically enable it, it'll run at the JEDEC speed (default plug and play speed) recorded in its SPD (the chip that stores the RAM's configuration)

and according to spec sheet for this particular kit, it's 2133. not 2666.

        • Thanks for the heads up - didnt actually knew that till now

          • -1

@Brrrrt: I don't think it'll be an issue. These sticks support multiple SPD's. I'm running 16Gb (2x8Gb) of this same RAM type (Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz C16 RAM) in my Plex server (Intel i3-10100) and it runs at 2666Mhz with zero issues.

It really depends on your mainboard, and if your mainboard/CPU support a max of 2666Mhz like mine does, it's likely this RAM will work fine with it.

EDIT - Just checked my daughter's computer - she's running an Intel i5-10400 but with 32Gb (2x16Gb) of this same RAM as well because it's on sale so much, and it's running stock at 2667Mhz according to the BIOS (I just checked). The mainboard recognises it as 3200Mhz CL16, but won't run it past 2666Mhz (2667)

            • @MrGareth: you might have this kit which have SPD speed of 2666, and yes the kit with 2666 spd will have multiple profiles allowing it to work at lower speed at 2400 and 2133 (maybe even 1866), for the sake of backward compatibility.

however the 2133 spd profile won't do forward compatibility.

I had a stick of ram die in my desktop, down to 8gb (I know 16 is min anyway) but man I was really hoping to build a new one after Nvidia 5xxx drops next year…

maybe I'll just chuck in new ram and deal until I can warrant a new pc.

Thinking and not buying, I know, it's not the ozb way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As a side note, they also have 2x16gb sticks for $86 -that might be better option for me

    • +1

yes, your next PC will most likely be DDR5, no point invest too much unless you really needed the capacity right now.

      • Yeah now I'm going down the CPU rabbit hole, mine is oldish, amd 2600…and thought if I can upgrade the CPU and ram for under $300 I'll do it. Only have a rtx4060 in this. So might be a nice little comp for the lil man in a year or so, but he won't be even 5 by then haha

Alibabe cheapest 5700x3d I can see will ship for $229. and the $80 ram is just over so, hmmmm….

        • +1

what motherboard do you currently have? a 5700X3D and this 64gb kit would be a very good bang for buck upgrade for under $400. Building a whole new system based on DDR5 would cost significantly more than that.

        • +1

I'd definitely do that. AM5/DDR5 totally not worth it at moment.

$309 for 5700X3D and 32GB is killer. I'm running 5800X3D (trivial diff to 5700X3D) with 32GB & 7900XTX and no FOMO with even the latest 9800X3D

          • @abowen: Thank you.

            • +2

@teereb: I personally wouldn't. AM4 is a dead end platform, if you are replacing CPU/MoBo/RAM altogether, what's the point of keeping yourself on the dead end?

unless you can keep using the mobo then there's a point, if it's dying then what's the point..

7500f from AliExpress is around AU$210

Gigabyte B650M Gaming WIFI from CenterCom or UMart will cost $155, or MSI PRO B650M-B from Amazon will cost $139 if you don't need WiFi.

              KLEVV FIT V 32GB (2x 16GB) DDR5 6000MHz C32 MWave will cost $149

              210+155+149 = $514

better single core speed, roughly same gaming performance, able to upgrade in the future.

              • @OMGJL: Thank you for the links! :)

This is the reason I was thinking I would keep it to $300; ram and cpu. Not that there's anything wrong with the cpu other than age (its very average bin), and it being a bottle neck for the 4060ti I have; and I don't really game much these days. So, tbh, the ram will do just fine for what the computer is doing.

No, as far as I can tell, mobo isn't dying either.

The comp I'll possibly build early next year sounds like it will be very similar to what you suggested too. Thank you for the advice :)

              • @OMGJL: AMD are still releasing processors for the AM4 platform, the 5900XT and 5800XT just 3 months ago. It is probably fair to say that AM4 is approaching the end of it's life soon, but for now…. not dead yet

                • @Cobalt_: I wouldn't say those new released processor means much… no architectural changes, it's basically older processor with a different name badge, to further reduce the price, without making those who already owned older processors feel bad about the price drop

    • Agree with most of the advice so far. Really need to understand what your needs here.

Any upgrades on existing AM4 will need to meet your "ROI". Otherwise if you replace the ram with a cheapie kit, would think that should get a minimum 1 year before you need an upgrade/new platform.

Also would think 4060 is fine for most uses and fairly recent, what are you expecting out of nvidia 5xxx?

  • How long is this deal likely to be up for?

  • God I fkn hate you guys. Bought a kit. I will probably end up giving this pc to my partner who does a lot of media stuff down the line or converting it into a server so it's not the worst investment I've made.
