    Note this 2 star review:

    Ok, but RF issues
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2024
    Size Name: SER8/8845HS/32G/1TB

These are a good value for money, have great specs and performance and come with a nice clean windows install with just the necessary drivers and nothing else.

The biggest issue with this unit appears to be related to RF shielding. The Bluetooth range is terrible as is the wifi range and there are lots of people reporting this in forums and reviews. There’s some suggestion that this is due to the use of a metal unibody enclosure to resemble a Mac mini and they haven’t tested it properly.

I connected a dongle for my multimedia keyboard to the front usb port and the range on that was terrible as well, making me think there are RF interference/shielding issues. I mitigated this by connecting a usb hub to the unit and plugging the dongle into that and the keyboard works perfectly. I’ve also ordered and external Bluetooth dongle which, when plugged into a usb hub, fixes the Bluetooth range issue. But unfortunately to disable the internal Bluetooth you also need to disable the internal wifi as they are the same chip. This means you need to plug the device in via Ethernet (or use a usb wifi adaptor)!

The Bluetooth range in particular is disappointing because my main use is as an emulation box so I want to be able to pair with Xbox controllers etc. Be prepared to spend another $100 on external hubs and dongles to get around this.

Just read on reddit that wifi card could be swapped and used with external antenna for better reception.

      • If you're doing an antenna mod you could keep the old wifi card. It's not a difficult mod but probably outside the wheelhouse of general users.

That 2 star review was my review :-) Any further questions, feel free to ask.

      • So will you say only when this is on sale for under $500, otherwise not worth to buy?

        • +2

I'd totally buy it for $500. I paid much closer to $1000.

If you dont need bluetooth for emulation etc its a steal.

      • Were there any performance problems when using your wireless multimedia keyboard with the dongle connected to the back of the SER8 and your keyboard ~ 60 cm in front?

        • 60cm would be ok. There’s a usb port on the front you can use.

But 1M+ and it became an issue. It was pretty bad.

Bluetooth issue is real. The connection is very bad. Had to buy a TP-Link BT dongle and attach it outside of the box. ~$12 dollar fix. All else is good. Changed to performance mode in BIOS. Get around 45 fps on Warhammer 2 Space marine.

Thats no good if you need a work around TBH, these things should work perfectly when out of box … So beelink tried to made a metal casing in order to uplift the quality but in fact its a stupid idea …

  • I need to keep an eye on these

  • mac mini M4 $999??

    • $815 only from AOC

  • price error? As other deals were expired/updated at similar time

    • Maybe, they might have forgot to remove the $360 coupon after they dropped it from $1,209 down to $849.

My order has been dispatched so looks like they honoured it.

      • Please let us know how much extra you need to spend in order to fix up that RF shielding issue.

  • Got this last night, feels snappy, and fortunately no wifi issues for me apart from a slightly lower max download speed on a 250/25 NBN plan with a cheapish Asus Wifi6 router compared to other devices, however I am only about ~6m from the router separated by a small wall/hallway section. It seems to be maxing out at about 180-200mbps compared to 230-240mbps on other devices in the same area - so probably not something you would want to use further away from the router I think! Latency and upload have no variance so far.

    • Wifi wasn't the issue as much as bluetooth.

      • Perhaps fortunately for me but unfortunately for the completeness of my review, I generally stick with 2.4ghz/cabled connections for devices… so can't report on that aspect yet, if I have time I'll test it later with a spare BT keyboard.
Since I did also read several reviews/complaints online (apart from yours) mentioning wifi issues I thought it was worth sharing my setup and experience. But I'd tend to agree with you that the wifi range isn't outstanding, which doesn't bode too well for BT and its lower transmission power

  • I am using a SER7, amazing performance but with bt issue as well when system loading is high. I just bought a SER8 as a gift for my friend and was hopefully no bt issue, until I see these comments…

    • @kobe8tang Happy to take it off from you if you are thinking to return it. I am just planning to use it as a server so these issue dont affect me.

  • Just tested mine and can confirm latency/interference with BT the moment I paired it with bluetooth speakers and have audio playing. Audio becomes intermittently choppy and there's a slight lag input with mouse cursor and typing.

Having only the mouse and keyboard paired seems to respond just fine otherwise. But yeah as others have mentioned, can probably be fixed with something like the TP Link UB500 dongle.

    • In my experience you need an external dongle and an external USB hub to fix it.

Using the external hub is enough to isolate the dongle from the RF shielding issues that the unit has.
