Seiko Classic SUR523P - Quartz, Sapphire $189 Delivered @ Starbuy

250

EDIT: the fun's over on this model, but Starbuy are still coming to the party with a replacement watch instead. Head over to this deal for all the details.

A quartz grab & go watch is an essential piece of every collection, so why not make it one that's as pretty as this? It was last seen for nearly double the price so this is a great deal.

On top of that, this is possibly one of the cheapest Seiko watches I've seen with a sapphire crystal so that'll please those who value it over Hardlex. I'm digging the salmon colour of the dial, it's a nice shade that keeps the indexes and hands still quite legible, and with the thin profile it'll be prefect as a classic dress watch that slips under a cuff easily.

Stock level appears to be 12+ on the web site but keep in mind this is only Starbuy's showroom stock levels, they'll likely have more in the warehouse so if it falls to zero keep checking back or send them an email.

@AdModnar: gendered colours is just a social construct either way

  • looking at a video, I think it'd be hard for me to go back to a watch where you can see the seconds hand go TICK TICK TICK. really makes me appreciate those high freq Bulova quartz watches. if that doesn't bother you though it seems like a great watch for the price

A lot of people don't like the 'deadbeat seconds' that quartz generally exhibits, but I personally find that's one of the appeals of the technology because it's a point of difference to automatic and gives it a sense of individuality. It's interesting that nobody complains about a digital display only changing once every second and it's using the same engine under the bonnet. Everyone's unique, though, with their own likes & dislikes so what floats my boat may only end up scuppering yours.

      • I was thinking about this. I wonder if a digital watch with microseconds would convey fluidity, or if it would just be an annoying distraction?

You might be able to get a Seiko mechaquartz movement in there. My VH65 Pagani is 10.5mm overall, and that includes a domed crystal.

Seiko has an affordable high beat (4 Hz) quartz movement, the VH31. It's used in many sub $100 watches.

  • Great price for a workhorse that will take a beating and keep accurate time for 20+ years. The salmon dial won't be for everyone, but I can see the appeal as a summertime watch.

  • Welcome back, sarb037 😇

  • now shows as out of stock

    • They've replaced it with another model instead, I've just updated the original post details.

Strike the above comment - the Mods asked that I create a new deal post instead, which is now live.

Bugger, I would have snagged this one. I have a salmon-sized hole in my collection it would have helped fill.

    Find some more, SB please!

  • I know it’s oos but I love this colour. Is this a men’s watch only?

    • The concept of gender-specific watches is starting to lose favour, it's more about whether you like it or not irrespective of what the watch looks like or how big it is. Some women like big dials, some men like small & sparkly dials - who's to say whether it's right or wrong for them? I would suggest looking at it more along the lines of 'does this colourway suit me?', 'will this dial look big/small on my wrist?', 'will this strap/bracelet feel okay?', or 'am I looking for a dive/dress/chronograph watch?'. Ultimately, it's all about what you like and not what someone else's ideas are.

What I can say is this is a 40mm diameter dial so if you have a small wrist (e.g. 6 inches or less) it may look or feel a bit on the overly large side. Anything 6-7 inches would look big but not overpowering, 7 inches and above would be fine (unless you're a weightlifter or wrestler with 9 inch wrists…in which case anything will look small). A good idea is to visit a jewellery store and try a few on to see what you like. If you happen to be in northern Tasmania then I highly recommend Watson's Jewellers in Launceston, they have an extensive selection to choose from and the staff are super-helpful.

      • Cheers, unfortunately have tiny wrists. Will keep an eye on the diameter for future deal
