  • Is this better than the Daawat everyday? We usually get this from the local Indian grocer for ~$15/5kg

    • +3

Yes it is supposed to be a more premium rice. Coles sell Daawat Everyday for $14.85 by the way (regular price).

    • More buzz word you see the more separate or longer every gain will be.

Like chinese or thai prefer rice that are sticky. Indian brand go the otherway and basmati is considered better.

  • +3

There are so many Dawaat varieties that trying to decide is pointless. And there is no actual indication of which one is better, just buzz words.

  • Is this better than Sunrice Jasmine White Rice? Coles is selling it for half price now at $12, this is what we always buy.

    • +8

      This is basmati not jasmine

      • -2

Rice is rice, you get one and use it for everything, not rich enough to have care about the difference

        • +1

You can say this till you have diabetes and then you realize not all rice is the same for you to consume.

        • Ummm no. Totally different flavours and textures. You’re telling me you would make sushi with basmati? lol

    • +2

Don't know if it's just me, but everytime we've gotten sunrice it always comes out subpar and aa hit gluggy. Even washing it beforehand doesn't help.

Worth trying another brand to compare.

      • +3

I tell you what I do: one cup of rice, 1.5 cups of water. Bring to boil, lower the fire to minimum and cook 8 minutes covered. When ready rest a few minutes and fluff. Their instructions of cooking 15 minutes are bs

      • +3

Sunrice Basmati is a blend of Basmati and long grain rice. I'm not sure what that other long grain rice is or what the percentage blend is but maybe that's the problem.

      • +1

Yes this purple coloured Sunrise jasmine always comes out gluggy

      • manual cook or rice cooker? probably too much water or overcook
if you unsure get one of those Korean or Japanese rice cooker they usually do a perfect job

        • Manual, to clarify I have no issues with other brands, just Sunrice.

Thank you for the suggestion, agree those rice cookers do make it very easy!

      • If you're using rice cooker then reduce the water to get better result. My trick is to add water to only half way to the number of cups of rice. E.g. if you're cooking 2 cups then only fill water up until 1 and half way line

    • We use jasmine rice for day to day cooking and basmati to make pilau or biryani

    • Basmati is supose to be better variety. Sella is better variety if ever you see sella on the pack it is premiumest

    • +1

Sunrice is one of the worst rice I ever had at Coles/Woolies.

Same same? $1 cheaper and delivered!

Why did i look at the reviews! people found little wormys in their rice :(

    • +1

      Extra protein

    • That's the fault of Amazon's warehouse practices. They aren't setup to distribute food

      • +1

Rice weevils are not uncommon; they are likely to have been sealed within the foil/plastic bag during packing/production.

        • Rice weevils are in one of the newer Pokemon games, aren't they?

      • +1

To be fair, those reviews are for the product, not the seller/store. So they could have been shipped from 3rd party sellers, including overseas sellers.

    • I see at 10c cheaper. 15.90 is still almost 16 :)

  • -1

    should be normal price

  • -2

This is not cheap at all compared to buying from Chinese grocery!

  • This is best of all basmati rice (at least to me) but hard to find in stock when on sale.

    • Yup. I had been buying Chef's Secretz for $19.50 which I also like, while waiting for this Select variety to go down to $19 again, great that it went down to $16 but yeah as you say getting stock at Coles is difficult, they can't find many bags on the shelf. Ask for a raincheck at Coles though so you can buy it next week or the week after when it's not on special and in stock. I also put in a backorder earlier at Amazon in case I don't make it to Coles and that could take weeks and weeks to fulfill anyway.

  • Costco sells the same product but in 20kg for $44.99 ($2.25 pk)
    https://www.costco.com.au/warehouse-savings_FY23_AU_P9_W1-2K…

    • That is Chef's Secretz, a different variety (see above), but still a good deal for those with Costco near them and membership. I would buy that instead if I could. Recently posted for $42.99

      • You're right mate, thanks

  • +3

    Make daawat for me guys

Tip: Soak rice for about 10 minutes first , Wash Basmati Rice 3 - 4 times till you can see only clear water , Cook in the Rice cooker for example 3 cups rice use 2 cups warm water (Optional add 1tsp of Ghee) give one gentle stir after finished only .

    • +2

3 cups rice and 2 cups water???

Even after soaking, that ratio for basmati rice will be rock hard

      • Sory Typo 3 cups rice use 7 cups of warm water

        • That would be way too soggy for my liking, especially pre-soaked.

          My rule of thumb ratio
          Basmati 1:1.5 water
          Jasmine 1:1.25 water

So 3 cups basmati is 4.5 cups cold water, no rinsing necessary. I get pretty much perfect basmati, separated but fully cooked grains.

I just buy the ALDI 90 second in microwave.

  • Was $27?! Who buys it for that price? $16 can be acceptable.

  • @hamza23 Is this variety better than the Katoomba Premium basmati rice?

    • +1

I haven't tried Katoomba sorry. Likely it would be similar, as that is Katoomba's 'premium' version basmati rice, this is also Daawat's premium rice. Daawat seems a little more popular but can't say which one is better.

      • @hamza23: Daawat Sella is also good rice but the prices have hiked allot.

    • +1

Probably at par or small difference

  • +1

Daawat is a good brand of basmati rice. The best is India gate but pricey.

  • It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a grain of inferior basmati to pass India Gate.

  • Just paid $20 for 5kg India Gate exotic at my local indian grocery…is this Daawat as good/better?

    • India Gate is considered a better brand, but Exotic is more of an everyday rice, comparable to Daawat gold.

Whereas this Daawat Select is more of a premium rice, like India Gate Traditional. India Gate Traditional is better but also more expensive, like mid to high $20s. I tend to try and get something good enough around the $15-$18 range.

      • How does this compare with the Daawat Super Basmati? Is the Select still better?

        • Select appears to be considered better, looking at Daawat website, the normal price (Select MRP ₹245, Super MRP ₹220) etc. It looks like select might be more aged and likely to have a stronger aroma, although Super is slightly longer grain (20mm vs 19mm). Super selling point is longer grains, select is rich aroma.

          • @hamza23: Thanks. I will try this one and see if I can see any difference.

  • Sona masuri rice is much better for any indian curry.

    • Partially factual. Imagine pulaao made with Sona Masuri 😜

For a second I thought dewalt was now selling rice

  • Daawat Briyani Rice is one of the best..

    • Of course it is true. Why else would they put it on their website?
