Note that Osaka is much cheaper to stay in than Tokyo/Kyoto and is only a short bullet train ride from them (4 hours tokyo/20 mins Kyoto).

It also has it's own attractions like Super Nintendo World, Osaka castle, etc, and is an hour from Nagoya too (Ghibli park, Toyota museum, legoland, etc).

So you can definitely do a full Japan trip flying into Osaka instead of Tokyo.

    • How much are tickets from Osaka to Tokyo? Is 3 days enough in Japan if you are doing Tokyo and Osaka

      • Not really, but you’ll be able to see a few things.

      • +4

Depends on the class of the seat for the train. Last year, first was around $170 ish one way pp.

3 days isnt enough to do Japan in any sense. Maybe see the basics of one city?

        • +3

Yep just got back and one way bullet train first class was about 160. 3 days is not enough to do Osaka and surrounds let alone Tokyo as well. You could easily spend 10 days/2 weeks doing Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya and Kobe which are all easily accessible from Osaka as the arrival/departure port.

      • +6

IMO 3 days is not enough even in one of the two cities. If you only stay there for 3 days you should just spent time in either one

      • +3

I was in Japan for 18 days and it still wasn't enough.

    • +1

Great point. Our shoebox hotel in Tokyo cost more than a proper family size room in Osaka with bunk beds etc

    • +2

Definitely this. We did 11 days in Osaka/Kyoto earlier this year and Osaka is fantastic. Cheap as chips for accomm of decent size vs Kyoto and esp Tokyo. Universal Studios Japan was a highlight. My suggestion would be to do two Japan trips if the budget allows. In/out Osaka and see Kyoto and even Hiroshima/Miyajima. Second trip in/out Tokyo and surrounds and head north and east.

Note the JR pass (whole countrywide) used to be awesome value but after price rise not so for most.

You can get a 5 day JR Kansai Hiroshima rail pass for circa $160-170AUD that covers the bullet train to/from Hiroshima and ferry to Miyajima and has 5 days unlimited travel. This is a bargain as the return Hiroshima bullet train alone costs the same as the pass. Would also cover travel to nagoya and kobe, himeji etc etc

      • So strange how you're saying Osaka is cheap for accommodation. I've booked a trip in Jan 2025 and found Osaka more expensive than Kyoto (actually found Kyoto accom to be fairly cheap at that time!)

        • +2

We went in June/July and I was able to get a 5 bedroom! house in Osaka near the end of a train line (TENGACHAYA station) that was a/c, two bath, huge kitchen and a massage chair for circa $200 AUD per night for 6 nights on Airbnb. I did book a long time in advance. I got a 2 bedroom tiny house (advertised as accommodating up to 10….) for 2 A, 3 Ch at Fushimi Inari station (literally backed on to the platform) in Kyoto and that was closer to $300 per night and nowhere near the quality of the Osaka place.

I have found the best locations for us are within a 5 minute (max), ideally 2 minute walk of a station. After doing 20-30000 steps per day with three kids the last thing you want is a long walk home from the station. Also tend to have restaurants/coffee shops/bars/supermarkets near to the station. Lots of options, don't have to be right in town as the public transport is so awesome.

          • @DocC: That's not bad for Osaka. Ah I thought we were talking about hotels, not Airbnb, but definitely would be a better option with a large family. I heard Airbnb was heavily regulated in Japan, though.

Could be you are booking early enough that few places are booked out yet.

It may be that Kyoto recently being significantly more expensive is a result of the unprecedented number of tourists going to Japan these days (the yen is low right now, making everything a real bargain). That results in the best value places being booked out, especially in Kyoto which is mostly a tourist area, leaving more expensive/worseValue places only.

Are you booking the same kind of places in both? Distance from train stations, fanciness, star rating, facilities, size, etc?

          • +2

@ItsMeAgro: True, also I think because it's not peak season the prices have gone a lot lower in January. But I remember reading that Kyoto was always more expensive, which was a surprise when Osaka turned out to be more expensive! Yes I booked similar hotels around the 3-star mark. Found one right next to Kyoto Station (Via Inn Prime Kyotoeki) which was like $70 per night! Prices in Osaka for equivalent near a station were around $80 - 90+.

  • +2

I believe this is pretty close to precovid prices. Everyone wants to visit Japan.

  • With these sorts of deals, is it possible to extend the Singapore layover so you could actually spend a few days seeing Singapore?

    • +1

Absolutely. SIA encourage layovers. You should be able book that delay in when booking (have done 2 weeks myself for a cruise + shopping)

      • +3

How do you configure the flight to get two days in singapore?

  • +5

I actually wish we’d taken Singapore airlines on our recent trip. We fly out from Adelaide and having an overnight in Singapore would have been really nice. A 7 or 6 hour flight on each day is also manageable.

When we went to Japan in 2023 we flew into Osaka and out of Tokyo, that was really convenient.

Last trip (this October) we used luggage forwarding throughout, even sending our largest luggage to the airport on our way home. It was really helpful. We accessed it from the hotels we were staying at each time. For the airport forwarding they like you to send it at least a couple of days on advance. We sent it on a Sunday (from Nagoya) for a Tuesday flight from Tokyo.

    • +1

How good is the luggage forwarding, you basically gain a day every time you go from each major city/stop

      • +1

you basically gain a day every time you go from each major city/stop

Can you clatify what you mean by this?

        • +6

you don't have to babysit your suitcase as they are very strict with the 3pm check in.
EG. We left osaka 8am, got to tokyo 11, straight to the tourist thing until 330, checked in at 4. Out the door again by 5.

As opposed to lugging your suitcase around to the hotel or any locker/storage. Rest for 30 mins at least, then do the tourist thing, collect your suitcase, then check in. Back and forth and back and forth.

    • How much was luggage forwarding roughly?

      • +3

        Roughly around $25 per suitcase

      • +1

It depends on size and destination but it’s always been around $20-30 per bag in my experience. We usually have a smaller overnight bag and then forward the large suitcase.

  • +1

Japan pros: Is there anyway around paying full price for the Shinkansen? Or just have to suck it up? A 7 day ticket for 2 is about $1000 au. I’ve never been but going in Feb with that last Air Nippon deal.

    • +3

There re several ways to buy discounted Shinkansen particularly for Tokaido Shinkansen. Many information are in Japanese and online booking also in Japanese. I booked once from Fukuyama to Tokyo afew thousand yen cheaper but forgotten how to book. You need to dig the details. One example https://smart-ex.jp/en/lp/app/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=…

    • +1

It’s such a good service that the price doesn’t seem all that bad really. You leave from train stations that are quick and easy to get to and don’t have to spend time going through security and waiting for checked luggage etc.

    • +1

Do you mean the Japan rail pass? It doubled in price a few years back and so you are usually better off buying normal tickets instead, unless taking loads and loads of shinkansen trips.

You can just get a Suica IC card for all non-shinkansen journeys (less than 50 bucks per person total for our last 10 day trip).

Then you just pay for your few shinkansen tickets at the station before boarding.

Or you can buy in advance with the JR app - that gives discounts if you book far enough in advance sometimes, but you lose the convenience of just rocking up. (It sucks to leave some amazing attraction early to rush to catch your booked train when there's loads of trains, every 10 or 15 mins).

Also: medium/small suitcases can fit in the overhead luggage storage on shinkansen, but larger ones you need to book seats next to the large luggage storage area well in advance. So avoid big bags or book early.

    • Either a JR pass (if traveling at a decent pace), a regional pass that allows you to ride the Shinkansen in a certain area (e.g. Hokuriku Arch pass), or if you don't mind riding the all-stops Kodama, there is the Kodama Puratto/Plat.

If you're buying a return trip for a longer distance Shinkansen (e.g. Tokyo <-> Hiroshima), JR also does 10% return discounts.

  • I thot it’s no recommended to buy through OTA for air fares why r these offers so popular?

    • +7

Personally I see these posts and just go and compare to the actual carriers website and book from there. The price difference is rarely enough to make booking through a third party make sense.

  • 1 hr layover in Singapore?
Anyone knows if flying from Sydney, does your luggage get carried forward to the Singapore - Osaka flight or do you need to check out and check in again in Singapore?

    • +1

Not for a stopover. They will forward your luggage to your destination. Layover is longer but not sure what happens with layovers.

  • +1

I can’t speak for other cities but from Adelaide there is like an insane 17hr layover in Singapore and if you have to stay at the airport that long it would be insane! Anyone know if you are allowed to leave the airport and visit Singapore during the layover?

    • +3

      Of course you can.

      • +1

And it's fun, too. You'll probably be exhausted, but if adventurous you can see a few sights in Singapore in 17 hours. Or even extend it a day and stay a night there.

        • +2

I see. Most of the flight schedules from Adelaide land in Singapore between 2-3pm. With a 17hrs layover you will definitely need to stay a night in Singapore (plus food), which adds to overall cost of travel. This might explain why the flights are cheaper because of the overnight layover? Though I have not checked it might still be an OK deal for other cities out of Australia with a shorter layover…

  • +2

Last year I went back to Osaka from Kyoto for an evening just to visit the aquarium. I missed seeing it while in Osaka because I didn't plan enough days there. Also because Kyoto was a bit boring.

  • Expired? The prices I'm getting on both the IWTF and the SQ website end up being $100+ more expensive than what is shown on the calendar/pick date screen…
