Have you actually been able to get grid approval for something this size from Energex or Ergon? I assume they’d impose a 5kw export limit if they did, but 40kw seems excessive.

    • +2

5kw export per phase, so 15kw export.
You would want to be using a fair bit of power for a system this size.

      • -1

My supplier (not-Ergon) only allowed 5 kW total export over three phases ie: 1.67 kW per phase.

        • +1

Seeing this is QLD, I call BS.
Energex do not limit to 1.67 per phase

          • -1

@Jessie Ryder: I forgot Energex is a thing in QLD. By not-Ergon I meant not QLD.

    • This is three phase so 15kw.

But yes, apart for the fact that 90 panels would require a massive house, plus massive shed no doubt, it is probably better for rural off grid for the space needed. Or maybe a big business with enough roof space.

  • +1

get a DC fast charger for EV so make most of it 🤣

    • Could probably setup a EV charging station for 6 cars at the front of my house with all that solar power

  • Maybe a silly question, but is a tin roof preferable for a solar panel install? Gonna be buying a house in the new year and I want it to have solar

    • +2

Most likely - some installers won't do tiled roofs. The other advantage with a bunch of solar panels is the heat reduction, due to the panels reducing the direct sunlight hitting the roof.

    • +2

Most places charge an extra fee for a tile roof (they crack and so on) and these guys do the same.

      • +1

Mine didn't, in fact they paid me because they cracked a tile, didn't notice during QA check and then had to pay repair cost + $1k compensation (their offer) after minor water ingress.

      • When I was looking some of them wanted spare tiles for if/when they broke them

I see no point installing expensive solar unless you can use it during power outtages like with a blackstart inverter some companies offer with a battery system.

    • You'd be better off getting a propane backup generator if continuous supply is an issue. 20kva units cost less than $10k, and you could still get a good 6.6kW solar system and change for the cost of this offer.

      • Why would I get a propane backup for the odd power outtage when solar with blackstart and a small generator can be useful for things year round. Pretty sure there are blackstart inverter packages around for 12k.

        • Much of a muchness then, except a large generator can power the whole house 24/7, and you get a solar system for a couple thousand more. 20kva is obviously overkill, I never draw more than 6kw even with aircon on, so it would be cheaper for a regular sized house.

  • is there an option to convert to 3-phase off grid with batteries?….rural living and get single phase only otherwise

  • What does the extra fee for tiled roof cover? I understand it's more risky as more chance to damage the tiles but what do you do differently? Or do I just pay more with higher risk of damage I also have to pay for?

    • Tile brackets cost more, takes more time, risk.

  • +2

The days of getting paid for exporting electricity are almost over, so you better have a battery with this system to be able to use all the electricity it generates.

  • I have been quoted for a 40KW system
    Jinko neo 440 panels
    Sungrow SH25T inverter
    SBH300 battery
for $38k installed. I chose the equipment and this is what they came back to.
Keen to hear thoughts on if this is considered a good price

  • anything this big without a sizable battery is a waste of time/money.
