It's really not.
I'm the last person to look at watches and watch deals but this might be the first one that I've seen and thought, that looks really nice. I could see myself wearing it but I don't think I'd ever pay this much for a watch. Just not my thing.
$700 isn't excessive as far as watches go but sounds like you don't need it.
How much are apple watches.. people never complain about the prices of those tech toys (with a limited life span).
I'd never get one of those either though. We do have fitness watches but that's a bit different. I just don't really see the value in spending $700 on a watch that just sits there and tells the time.
@ozbs25: Fair call. People like spending money on different shit.
@ozbs25: Yep, in terms of purely telling the time, there's not really any value in any watch above $120 or so. For most people, a $30ish Casio will do the job well.
@beltdrive: Mostly a happy medium, a black plastic beater doesn't always look the nicest (but still cool).
Unlimited options under $300, I'm sure people spend more on other stuff, no issues with either.
@G-rig: $300 definitely gives one a lot more options, but I do think for under $120 - maybe $150, there's a Casio for just about every regular person who isn't really into watches as a Hobby. They might not have solid stainless steel throughout, but they'd look close enough. Not to mention Aliexpress watches.
@beltdrive: Totally, can get a lot for under $120 and those Pagani etc look like much more expensive watches.
Can't go wrong with Casio, God tier!
It's hard to explain why someone chooses to be watch enthusiast when a microwave can do the same thing. There's something about wearing something extremely intricate and complicated like a watch. It's not just about utility.
Some people buy expensive watches to celebrate milestones. I bought one when my first daughter was born so I have something to remind me of that day.
It can also last a lifetime, something you can pass down to your kids. I have an Omega from the 70's my dad passed down to me and it's one of my treasured possessions. If you think about it, how many personal things do you own that you can say will last over 50 years?
I suppose I can understand why people get into watches, it's just not for me.
If we want to get into family heirlooms and whatnot, 50 years isn't that long though, not that I have anything that old in my keeping, at least not yet.
Keeping in mind that each item is subjective on value:
- brand
- history
- movement
- special edition/collab
- swiss made
- design
- craftsmanship - levels of polish, etc
The movement is good, but not worth the price for it.
Pretty big watches. I haven't seen the colourway, but get it if you like it. RRP $1600, so $700 is a good deal.
Hamilton have had disgusting price increases over the last 4 years, very overpriced now. Great brand though.
@Thrifty Dan what is the cheapest watch with the H-40 movement (or similar) then?
I'd probably recommend a few of the more popular models (the interstellar one, murph or the Khali field), pretty iconic and easy to move on. Most over $650 easily though if not double that
Not just Hamilton, most of watch brands had disgusting price increases.
Good watch with good price, 80 hour power reserve for entry level mechanical watch is a blessing.
I have Khaki Aviation Pilot Day Date and love the brand. I would recommend to buy it if you like the design
I recently got the intra-matic auto chrono and it hasn't left my wrist. Amazing watch but I would never pay the RRP.
educate a watch noob on how its amazing.
