I absolutely hate this design. There's a reason you can still buy the "old" 1000mx4's everywhere (they fold flat in a far more compact way).
I actually found the XM3's noise cancelling was better than the XM4's, as well. Sony seems to just be going backwards.

They are good / different, I've had both and would recommend either up to a price point.
I like the better mics on the 5's, more comfortable and bit more natural sound. They still lie flat, just not in a ball like others (some people just like to throw their stuff around and don't use the included case.
Just get whatever you prefer.
the hinge is super fragile. Fixing it will cost you around 360. Sony Australia offers 40% discount if you purchase another one, no warranty.
