over $2000 for a one generation old phone

welcome to the world of Apple

Wait until you find out Toyota dealerships are still selling 2022 Camry's for RRP!

      • +2

        they're the delirous

wait until they come crawling for your $$$ after they have so much stock to move

      • -3

Imagine thinking you have to buy a car at sticker RRP though lol

      • For those who still think they never breakdown and have no passion with cars.

      • +8

Every single new Camry feels like it is being driven by an Uber driver

      • Ford once asked me $10k higher than a new one for a 3 years old Raptor :D

    • -3

Crazy the amount of downvotes. The phone objectively costs over $2000, and is a generation behind. Are these people in a cult or something?

Do Apple have something like Samsung Dex?

(which after connecting it to a monitor / tv, turns it into a desktop…. and you can connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, use it like a regular computer, do internet browsing / use apps on the big screen / watch shows, play emulated games with Bluetooth controller, have different sized windows etc.)

      • No

      • Nope, it simply treats external display as airplay when you connects it onto. If you use type-c dock / hub, you can virtually connect keyboard and mouse but the GUI is essentially same as ordinary iOS. same with iPad.

        • Oh ok… So you see a screen on the big screen, just with the same shape as the phone?

        • iPadOS is not the same here. iPhone AirPlays, iPad is more like Dex.

This is why I switched to Android.

Out of all Apples crazy pricing. Their storage ladder is by far the most extortionate. For what is quite literally $20 of flash

    • -1

Just one of the reasons i bailed on them. They used to be the best, now theyre just ghr most expensive. There is a difference.

    • And the 512GB version is more expensive than 1TB

    • how did you think they are now a 3.5T USD company?

    • Such horrendous value for an already overpriced, last-gen product.

  • How long until these bloody things are 5 grand. I'm only on an 11 because of how expensive they are, but will have to start seriously considering my future upgrades,

    • If a $2000 iPhone can last 5 years, it’s worth it to me.

      • +3

it's not worth to use a phone for 5 years.

        • +1

Certainly your average experience would be better with two $1000 phones, replacing the first after the first 2.5-3 years. Also carries lower risk.

          • +5

@nigel deborah: I had Samsung Note two times and the mother boards burned after 1 year. Then I shifted to Apple and it worked 5 years for me until I bought a new iPhone.

            • +1

              @mkowarkski: Samsung is not a good comparison…

              "Fire in the hole~~"

            • -2

@mkowarkski: Nice anecdote but not sure the relevance

            • @mkowarkski: I have a S20 FE 256GB since launch in 2020 which costed me 900 bucks. It's still running perfectly fine after 4 years and most likely for another year or two. Just received the September security updates on it as well.

          • +1

@nigel deborah: Which $1000 phone is even close to an iPhone? Not talking about just the hardware but the things that it can get done and privacy which is very important to me because of malware going around these days

            • -4

@dealsucker: For 'privacy' android and iOS are essentially on par, besides a marketing gimmick here or there. You'll have a similarly good experience with either, as long as you buy your phone from a reputable supplier (AliExpress and the like carry a risk of malicious software being installed). iOS is susceptible to malware just like android, so using an Apple phone doesn't give you immunity.

In terms of hardware, you're not going to match any $2000 phone (unless you import something Chinese) but you can get close enough for the average to be better. Pixel 9 Pro or Galaxy S24 Ultra can be had for roughly 1k if you wait for a good bargain.

              • +1

@nigel deborah: Right. One is a company which makes all its money by selling hardware, another is a company which makes more than 80% of its money from advertisements. Please tell me they are on par.

                • @dealsucker: If you just don't want targeted ads, there are other work arounds. If you're concerned about malicious use of your personal info, what's the difference? A bad actor (company or person) has just as much access whether it's Google or Apple.

Could you be more specific about what info you're protecting and against who, and how Apple does it better? I'd be very happy to know, I'm not actually taking sides except against exorbitantly expensive devices (I wouldn't pay 2k for any phone, android or iOS).

            • -3

@dealsucker: This old chestnut. Only Apple sheeps still believe this.

            • @dealsucker: A Samsung Galaxy S, like the S23 can be had for less than a 1000 and will easily last you 4-5 years and trust me it can do much more than an iPhone can. Have you seen Dex?

              • @Rimas: Dex is not my use case. I am not carrying a keyboard and a mouse where ever I go to be able to use it properly. Also, camera's on samsung are hugely overrated.

              • @Rimas: Dex is awesome, but it's still pretty niche.

I've had it on my last two phones and used it a few times bit more to try it out. I haven't even used it in my current phone. Though I have tablets, laptops , desktop PC, etc.

        • +3

Fake news. Most phones will easily go on to 3-5 years now.

Phones from Samsung, Google and Apple all have decent support terms.

          • @ihfree: True, especially for iPhones and iPads. 4+ years old may not support the latest iOS updates, but they still receive important bug fixes.

          • @ihfree: I am not sure if google's hardware is going to last that long especially the soc which has the performance of a mid range chip today

  • can we get the GST back if claimed at TRS as part of the tourist refund scheme

    • why not?

    • Anything ship from and sold by Amazon, it’s easy to download the invoice from your order history.

    • Yes but technically you have to declare it when you come back to Australia (if that is your intention) and pay the tax back.

      • Do you need to declare if within limits (say 4 people travelling together)?

        • I've had them combine passenger limits when travelling with 1 other person but never tried 4x

        • No you don't.
The officer indeed very casually asked my wife about her iphone and all we had to do was telling him we were travelling as a family and not carry any other duty free stuff.

      • That's true, but you declare at a reduced value if new phone is being used (unsealed box).

    • You can claim TRS for just about anything if you've got the paperwork.

You can't however reimport it to Australia without paying duty, unless you're within the relevant limits or exemption.

  • Is there still 10% Amazon gift card?

    • Nope at this moment. Maybe next year

  • +1

Is this for the videographers that use iPhones? That's the best use case I can think of for getting more storage on an iPhone, if you're just a regular user taking photos, don't see the point, just get a USB drive if you need it and when you need it.

    • this IS a USB drive by Apple.

  • -5

Not a good buy, Even the A18 processor on base iphone 16 has better performance scores than A17 pro chips!

    • +4

Any examples where that will make a real world difference?

    • +2

Oh so the issue is that this is second best?

    • +1

A18 and A17pro much the same.

      • It might make a difference when the AI features are launched! Also, its not just about the difference at this point but the longevity of software updates too!

  • At least your not buying an iPad mini 7 , where they have replaced a A-15 Bionic Binned Chip with an A-17pro Binned Chip despite what the marketing tells you , the performance tests tell the story.

  • whats a good price for the iphone 15 pro 1tb? was gonna get the 16 one but cant say im a fan of the action cam and prefer the lightness of the 15th gen

    • This one here is the best price right now for an official Australian stock from a reputable seller. You may find slightly cheaper ones on eBay and the likes but I would rather buy from Amazon instead of saving a few dollars.

      • yeah not after max version though just pro

  • Dam Apple is really good at making people pay stupid money eh…

    • Indeed this phone is not worth the dollar for those who are smart

  • Too expensive still doesn't look like there was discount despite 16 came out

  • Lol, comes close to Gerri's best deal within a grand?
