I had to look up what country that is. Haha nice deal

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island nation. Despite being a fantastic tourist destination (great food, friendly people, amazing history, beautiful beaches/reefs, surfing, rainforests & waterfalls and even really cool climates uphill), what's holding from Aussies going there is mainly lack of knowing as well as cost of flights. This will be a sweet deal. Once you are there, everything becomes much more affordable (I'd say similar to Bali) hence a great place to visit even if you are a budget traveller. I was born and raised in Sri Lanka and it's such a lovely place to visit (saying this after travelling to many other countries since).

Have been, can vouch for it being a pretty awesome place to visit!

I've had mixed reports including from an ex gf who's from there. Food is cheap, but the roads are absolute insanity compared to SE Asian countries and that's saying something.. And many tourist attractions cost $50usd or more to enter, so it's not cheap after all when seeing a sight doubles your daily budget. Multiply that $50 across multiple family members and you're somehow paying months worth of a local's salary, but where is it going?

      • +1

As a Sri Lankan, I can understand why you'd have mixed feelings based on those observations. While the roads and traffic conditions are better than India, the roads can indeed feel chaotic, especially in urban areas. Still, part of that can also be the energy and pace of life here, mostly during peak hours, which can take some getting used to. Regarding the tourist attractions, yes, many are priced higher for foreigners, which can feel disproportionate when you compare it to the local cost of living. The revenue from those fees is meant to go towards maintaining these historical and natural sites, though admittedly, the transparency on how it's used could be improved.

Roads are absolute insanity? Thats bullshit. Also no tourist attraction costs over $50 to enter. Most expensive tourist attraction is Sigiriya with $35 fee. Its an unesco world heritage site.

Your ex gf is probably an asylum seeker in Australia whose residency depends on tarnishing the home country by spreading lies

        • +4

Steady on, no need to tarnish the reputations of asylum-seekers by spreading allegations like that. Rest of your points stand though and I agree with them. Sri Lanka rules.

      • +2

First of all, there is no $50 fee any more so that's that.
Second, it's not chaotic compared to Italy and Greece for an example. I happened to drive in those two countries recently and I thought with Sri Lankan driving experience I should be fine, boy was I wrong. What I'm saying is this, all depends. If you find Italy and Greece driving experience challenging but doable, then driving in Sri Lanka would be a breeze. But if you are someone who's faint hearted to even Sydney traffic, then probably avoid driving. Then again, it's only around Colombo city. Once you are outside the city area, you should be perfectly fine. I don't see the point of hanging around Colombo if you're a tourist anyways.

This report seems a bit unusual. If your ex was avoiding tollways, I can understand how things might have unfolded. As many have mentioned, there's no place charging $50, except for one, which you can easily choose to avoid. Aside from public transport, the road network is well-connected with tollways, likely even better than in Vietnam.

Enjoy it while you can, the Chinese will own the place soon

    • How are things on the ground nowadays?

When we looked at going 2 years ago, there were multiple issues with fuel, electricity, and protesting.

      All resolved?

      • +3

Yes. Resolved over an year ago

      • +2

That's history, country is much stable now. Positive side of that is, the exchange rate is much favorable to tourists (obviously) so things are even more affordable.

Cheaper to hop on this and fly to Maldives?

    • +2

Maldives is beautiful. In my humble opinion though, Sri Lanka has everything that Maldives has to offer plus much more. But if you are seeking for a bucket list item then why not visit Maldives as well. Maldives flights from Colombo are dirt cheap.

    • Sri Lanka is much better than the Maldives

BNE is $118 more than SYD, even though it's closer.

    • +1

Distance and price aren't often related (to an extent)
