Dewalt DW735-XE Thicknesser $1019 ($1126 with Tables) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Bunnings

70

Every Youtubers' favourite thicknesser/planer!

I've been eyeing one of these off for the last few weeks expecting a new redemption deal from Dewalt after the last round finished. Instead, I was in Bunnings just now and noticed they've dropped the price to $1019.

Pair that with the current Amazon Prime Big Deal on Dewalt feed-in tables for $107.44 (15% off at checkout) and you're getting the thicknesser plus tables for $1126!

HiredGoon points out in the comments the following:

"You're probably better off showing that price down at Total Tools(totaltools.com.au) and asking them to price match, you should then $200 in store credit through their current promotion for a Dewalt purchase over $999.

Note - The price match might make you exempt from redeeming the credit, I can't see the terms and conditions online."

    • Nice catch! Luckily, I get a discount at Bunnings otherwise I'd consider returning this and trying that instead.

Shouldn’t it be called a thin-nesser since it makes wood thinner?
    I’ll show myself out…

I'm waiting for the increase in A&E visits as a result.

  • I wonder if these have similar plastic bevel gears as ryobis… for winding the mechanism up and down to adjust thickness. Those things are a very expensive design fault wear item.

    • 3D printers will get these companies to pull their head in, all your need is one disgruntled designer to put the model in the wild

    • MASSIVE cheap ass design flaw that one.

I think I'd rather have the spiral head Carbatec, so many advantages over the blades. Also the 735XE in the US comes with the tables and spare blades from what I can see, so check that before buying extras.

    • I looked into this. The 'spiral head' that Carbatec market is just the regular long blades on a slant, not the helix style blades that you typically associate with spiral head (and cost a lot)

This one has the spare blades, no tables though

Edit actually, maybe I'm wrong. Looking at the new Carbatechs maybe they do have actual spiral heads. I was looking at an older model before.

      • My Carbatech planer/thicknesser is over fifteen years old and it came with the proper spiral head with carbide inserts. Brilliant little thing it is. I only just replaced the cutting head bearings last year but still haven't rotated round to the third side of the inserts.

Going to be positives and negatives to all the thicknessers in this price bracket. The Dewalt DW735 is tried and tested, a quick search shows that. That's not to write the Sherwood off or anything, it's also a great thicknesser i'm sure. I'm very happy with my Dewalt, and i'm sure one day will invest int he helical heads for it (not a cheap upgrade at $500, but worth it in the long run).

The thing that grinds my gears with the Dewalt, is why the feck aren't the extensions included by default? Like seriously? And then to charge ~$150 (!!!) for them retail is just ridiculous.

All that said, the Dealt is very very nice and despite being loud AF produces terrific results. Don't forget to plug in your dust extractor though and walk behind the chip chute, ask me how I know heh.

love my sherwood spiral head- fast, much better finish and way quieter

    • yep, good times with the helical head Sherwood

  • Here's me using a secondhand GMC thicknesser I bought on Facebook for $100 - what I wouldn't do for one of these!

After a solid 15 years, I upgraded my GMC mitre saw to a Dewalt DWS780. Holy crap that things such a huge upgrade I can't believe I waited that long! I've gone from hardly using the mitre saw at all (relying on the table saw for most cuts) to using it for every second cut.

      • Funny enough I have a GMC mitre saw also! I haven't used it for years, it was only ever good for very rough carpentry. I've been looking the last two or three days on Facebook for a better saw (probably a Makita, DeWalt is out of my pricerange even secondhand).

Not sure what your budget is, but I noticed Bunnings stock a 254mm Dewalt for $347 https://www.bunnings.com.au/dewalt-254mm-10-1600w-fixed-head…

That ^ doesn't slide though which might be a deal breaker

I was lucky (?) to get an insurance payout after some tenants absolutely trashed my property. As I'm doing most of the repairs myself, I could justify spending the cash on the tools as insurance coverage. Pretty much went all in on Dewalt. Didn't realise what I was missing until trying decent tools. I've heard good things about the Makita saws too

          • @Hurg: The Makitas seem to pop up on Facebook a lot, often for really good prices. But I suspect a bunch of them are ex-tradies saws that have had the crap beaten out of them (thrown in and out of utes every day and so on). I hadn't seen that Dewalt, but I'm happy not to take a slider - the less bits that move I reckon the less bits that can go wrong. If I need to cut something bigger I can always throw it on the table saw. Funny enough the Dewalts almost never come up on Marketplace, at least around here (but I am in the bush).
