    Not too bad.

Be aware this is a dangerous road. I am $800+ in on drives and another $1000+ on a customs server/nas that I am putting together from consumer pc parts that’s going to probably cost me another $1000+ in drives.

God I shouldn’t have written this down, what have I done…

    • +4

Oh yeah 100% I can relate. I consolidated most of my homelab down to two NAS drives (this & Synology) and a single "server" workstation. The 5900X paired with the modded RTX 2080 Ti 22GB was about an extra $1000 ontop.

Now I just need to procure more 4TB SSDs and maybe their NVMe NAS

      • +1

Yeah pretty much doing the same thing.

What is “modded” RTX 2080 Ti 22GB, what did you mod on it, the memory?!? How?

Also yeah full SSD nas’ are so attractive but $/tb is a bit too expensive for me

        • +1

Basically an RTX 2080 Ti 11GB modded to have an extra 11GB of VRAM. For AI tasks you can get similar performance to a 3090 for less and it works with NVIDIA drivers out of the box.

          • @Clear: Did you mod it yourself with soldering or bought it like that?

That would be a big job….

            • +2

@Larsson: Bought it. DIY would be too much effort.

        • where did you buy it? link please.

          • +1

@Man10United: I think you meant to ask @Clear mate :) first time I am hearing this card.

      • +1

@Clear where did you buy it?
        sorry @Larsson

        • +1

I got them from AliExpress ago in a sale. Available in the blower style and 3 fan.

There's quite a lot of Frankenstein GPUs on AliExpress. Mobile GPUs like the RTX 3070M converted to a PCIe card and quadros converted like the RTX A2000 8GB which performs like an RTX 3060. Of course these Frakenstein GPUs require a special driver from GitHub, while the RTX 2080 Ti 22GB works natively.

    • Ooo

    • Just remember if you're using ARR stack and automation, you can just delete and get the Linux iso again.. What I'm doing. I don't want to buy a custom 8 bay nas..

It's such a fun hobby though

      • +3

Nah I like keeping data always onsite. Homelab and data hoarder go hand in hand haha

        • Yeah I get it man, I'm sitting on over 90tb… Sigh

    • What parts are you using?

      • Well in true OzBargain fashion I have totally randomly bought 5700x from the last $180~ish deal.

So I just bought a Asus rog strix b550-xe board. (Finding boards that support many pcie expansion and bifurcation is a challenge, especially on a eol platform)

Got an intel a380 for display.

Waiting for deals on a 32 or 64gb dual channel.

I was also very split on the case but got a fractal r6 in the end.

Cooler will be a one of the thermal right 120s

And a will be buying drives over time but thinking 16/18tb, whatever I can justify haha.

        • Parts look legit. Good things with are:
          - integrated NIC is Intel brand
          - added card for 4 extra M.2 slots
          - CPU and motherboard support ECC RAM
          - decent amount of PCIe slots so you can add more NVMe, 10GbE networking, a HBA or dedicated networking for VM's

I ended up going with old server hardware and putting TrueNAS Scale on mine. I got my hard drives (16TB) from eastdigitalhk which was a deal posted here. They were packaged perfectly and cost about $275-$290 each.

Using old parts ended up being cheaper but probably isn't as performant as yours will be and old stuff tends to consume more power too. Going this route I did get cheap ECC RAM and IPMI plus an excessive amount of PCIe slots and SATA ports.

          • @TightLikeThisx: Haha yeah I spent many, many hours and long nights obsessively researching 😅

I was going to get a x570 for more/higher speed pcie lanes but honestly there just wasn’t any good x570 boards left that was better than the b550 boards unfortunately.

But let me show you something I almost got, for people reading this here in the future too:

Gigabyte MBS GBT AMD AM4 MC12-LE0:
            https://amzn.asia/d/esEWGop

This is a b550 board with IPMI (that you don’t have to pay extra for). It just didn’t have the expansion ability I was hoping for, for all the cards you mentioned too.

Yeah I didn’t go old server mainly because I didn’t want to jet engine fans and single core performance (and yeah power usage too)

And yeah all my drives are from east digital. And I haven’t had any issues with them yet a year in. (They are in a Asustor NAS right now so they spin down so might be helping) I will buy all my drives from them again.

And potentially just get unraid tbh as I want to expand storage as I go. Truenas doesn’t really allow that unfortunately (unless you buy them in pairs, thats very expensive and halving the storage capacity on top is way too expensive in the end)

            • +1

@Larsson: That board looks interesting especially for something that just functions as a NAS with no containers or VMs running on it.

Old server can be good soundwisen provided you go with tower parts and not rack servers. I pick low TDP parts and use a sound deadened case like Fractal Define. Also the fans I use are slow but are hooked up to a manual controller and turned down.

Unraid has always looked good but I've fallen in love with ZFS.

            • @Larsson: Nice find.

And it's got two PCIe slots for SAS and 10GbE 🤔

              • @Nom: I need a graphics card (media server on a AMD platform with no igpu lol) and I was hoping for some m.2 fast raid too. So it may not work well for me haha!

Maybe if I got a NAS only server one day!

Hope it works for you though!

Umart has is for $600 plus delivery, so this about 10% cheaper than that

built in software is a bit of a TOS :P

  • +2

Might want to check the newly released AOOSTAR WTR PRO Ryzen 7 as well. Their intel N100 version is a bit cheaper than the Ryzen one as well for additional savings.

    • +2

FYI those prices are in US$, so works out to AUD~$680 for the Ryzen, AUD$550 for the Intel N100 system (16G/512 SSD)

    • Very keen to get one of these. They said preorder will be back up on 1st Nov.

The ryzen one is more than I need, but maybe I can do more with it if it has more powa..

Ugreen also have something similar but costs more and you get less.

  • how do these stack up to qnaps?

    • similar question, how do these stack up to a Synology?

    • +1

Mine has been perfectly stable, no issues with the hardware. But the OS is a dumpster fire, support is non existent and having to run everything through a dodgy implementation of Docker has been a cycle of headaches every time there is an update.

If you like tinkering with stuff, it’s a bargain. If you want something turnkey, I’d look elsewhere.

  • Just about to start my homelab journey, what do people think of paying a bit more for the F4-424 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CPP5GDZ3/ref=emc_bcc_2_i?th=1? For what I can see you get a newer CPU and a bit more ram out of the box. Is the extra 50 bucks worth it?

    • +1

It'll certainly be more future proof than this one and the Synology-black is cool.

  • Should I get the TerraMaster F4-423 or the Synology DS923+? I only need it for video and photo backup, as well as cloud sync

  • Cloud sync app not working for Google drive though as not authorised by Google
    Any alternatives?

    • I use it with Google Workspace which is slightly different and it works. From my limited research apparently Google Drive works fine in TOS6.
