Quite a good NAS on sale from TerraMaster if you're after something on a budget that'll do all the essentials including network storage with RAID redundancy, Plex transcoding, Docker, video surveillance, syncing to OneDrive/Google Drive/Dropbox and more. While the OS isn't as mature as others you can still others including Synology DSM (Xpenology), Unraid, TrueNAS, Windows and more.

Featuring 4 SATA bays, 2x M.2 2280 NVMe slots for storage/cache, 2x 2.5GbE LAN ports, Intel Celeron N5095 quad-core CPU, 4GB DDR4 SODIMM RAM (upgradeable to 32GB), 2x USB 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps ports and HDMI (for command input).

Alternatively you can get the newer F4-424 NAS with an Intel N95 CPU for $607.99 delivered.

Last time I checked you can still get a free 4GB stick of RAM by posting a review and sharing it with TerraMaster. For HDDs I recommend checking out East Digital for cheap enterprise drives.

The hardware is solid, but the Terramaster OS (TOS) is pure garbage written by amateur developers mimicking established NAS OSes. If you get one of these, install another OS straightaway. TrueNAS if you need high availability and maximum data integrity, or Unraid for home media server applications. You just need to replace the built-in USB bootloader with your OS of choice, change the boot order in the BIOS, and increase the PWM fan settings.

    • +1

I'm hopeful that TOS 6 will be an improvement when it's released. 5 was way better than 4. But yes very much nothing in comparison to what QNAP and Synology pump out.

      • if you can install TrueNAS on this hardware, you could install xpeneology :)

        • +1

Hence why it's in the description.

    • +2

huh the unraid o/s is usd249? thats expensive….

      • +1

For a lifetime license yeah. There really isn't anything as good as it.

    • When installing another OS will the fans auto adjust, or will they always spin at max?

      • They will auto adjust, but you may need to calibrate the fan PWM slope and other settings in the BIOS.

    Celeron N5095
Wow thats even better than latest synology ds423+ processor.

Hmm tempted. Been using synology box since 2011 no kidding (one unit. Never has a single issue till now). maybe time to try something new.

Will this Terra lasts for 10 years??
I just want more powerful nas to run dockers and those arrs

No issues for 13 years and you consider trying something different?

I'd want something with a proven track record that's really highly rated to do that.
A more current Synology would be my choice.

      • yeah true.. i just want dockers and automated Arrs. other than that, this 13yo NAS is still perfect for me i dont encode, i stream FHD movies only, i backup photos, download torrent, thats all.

        • I have sonarr, sabnzb etc. on my DSM 5.2 - works fine still

          • @gizmomelb: Can i dm you please i really want to learn using dockers

            • @CyberMurning: they were installed as DSM apps or as command line over 11 years ago.. well before docker was released in 2013. I'm waiting on a new 8 bay NAS style case to be delivered (decided I didn't want to use the mid tower case I bought) and I'll be transposing everything across from my old HP DSM 5.2 NAS to a DSM 7.2 setup on the N95 with 12 SATA ports motherboard I purchased recently. Maybe I'll do a youtube build / tutorial.

              • @gizmomelb: Ah so you will be using Xpenology..
Im interested building just small 4 bays (or just get terramaster) and keep using DSM.
                Yes please, tutorial is amazing

    • I have been running a ds513+ for 10 years with no issues beyond the few drive failures as expected. Rumours are that new consumer lineup is to be released later in the year after a leak ( refer reddit and nascompares.com) so waiting for them to drop.

  • For 500 bucks why not use an old pc with truenas?

    • +2

big and not power efficient maybe?

      • +4

        For 500 you can get a mini itx n100 (~20% faster+less wattage) mobo+case with 150-200 left over.

        • +1

how about the hdds, can i build myself something similar like those qnap terra syno case? that fit 4hdds with small size case

          • +2

@CyberMurning: I'm not sure about 4 slotted ones but jonsbo has mini itx 'nas cases' with 5-8 slots. The n100 mobos are pretty much all 6 sata connectors+2 m.2 slots which you can convert to more sata ports if you wanted. No smaller n100 mobos with only 4 from what I've seen.

Jonsbo n2 case seems the smallest at ~11 litres out of all Jonsbo cases.

This one is a 4 bay at ~9 litres.

The linked terramaster is ~7 litres for comparison.

            • @JerraJones: Any links to how to setup and use the linked model?

              • @RangaWal: ?? setup = install motherboard, run cabling, install PSU and HDDs, then install whatever operating system in it you want to use. Lots of youtube etc. tutorials if you google search (though the issue might be more deciding which O/S you want to install?)

        • You can't get an n100 with a case supporting 4+ hard drives for a good price

          • @john676: Jonsbo n4 is 150 locally from PLE and supports 6 3.5"+2 2.5" drives. On the bigger side but it supports something other than flex/proprietary psu's and has to be bigger to hold more than 4 drives.

            • @JerraJones: Thanks ill check ple for 4 bays case. Edit. I like n1 but Yours is cheaper actually

  • I'm in the market for a 2 bay NAS for 2x 16TB drives. aliexpress screwed me so I have the drives but not the NAS i ordered.

    • I bought the F2-223 (2 bay) model when it was $319 and I'm happy with it. It suits my needs.

Intel N95 is far superior and will play AV1 video via Plex

get the newer F4-424 NAS with an Intel N95 CPU for $607.99 delivered. Slap TrueNAS Scale on and install plex
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/856811

    • This is damn tempting. Windows is not great for a plex server any more. I might do this

  • +1

People make it sound as if TrueNAS is child's play. There's a reason a lot of people don't bother building their own NAS. It's nothing like Windows where you install and then it automatically PnP and do updates, etc. Make sure you do your research. No point crying after spending a lot of money only to find out True NAS is beyond your level of knowledge. This is from a guy whose been using Windows for the last 33 years but never touch Linux and I can tell you, from what I read, it is a steep learning curve

    • +1

most people just want file storage/accessibility from a NAS, they never use any other feature.

  • Can this be used as a das under proxmox? Or truenas?

  • Hey i am looking to use it to store files like google drive as well as streaming videos to tv from the NAS. Is this good or is there a better option for maybe 100-200$ more?

    • +1

The F4-424 is better for streaming/Plex given the newer Intel N95 chipset. Unfortunately that's out of stock but TerraMaster do run regular sales anyway and they'll be sure to restock.

  • I only want to run a Plex server to stream videos in the format that I have (does that mean I don't need encoding?), and store some personal files. With the price of drives these days, I think I can get by with 2 drives (I assume this is called a mirrored RAID?). Would this device do it, or is there a simpler/cheaper model? I'm currently using a micro PX running Windows, but it's forever needing to be rebooted.

    • Sure can. This one even can encode fhd no issues mybe 4k.

    • Uninstall Crowdstrike

    • if you're streaming videos in the format you downloaded / created them in, then you do not need transcoding.

There are lots of 2 bay devices if that is all you think you will need - but having the option of extra bays so you can install more drives later. The choice is how you set the NAS storage up - use the 2 drive system as a 1 drive with 1 drive redundancy (to give some data protection - but it does not mean it is a backup!) reather than using BOTH drive storage together (gives more storage space but if a drive error occurs (or dies) you have no data parity and WILL lose that data). With extra bays you can add more drives to expand the storage space - BUT, if you setup the drives with a 1 drive redundancy (parity, not mirrored - that's another choice) then the new drives added to the NAS also need to be the same size as the original drives you used - otherwise if you choose to add a larger drive (say you had 2x 4TB drives in there originally and later on with price drops you decide to install an 8TB drive) then you will need to install 2x 8TB drives and have the NAS expand / rebuild the pool and parity drive before that extra 8TB is available (only 8TB instead of 16TB since one of the 8TB drives will now become the parity drive and the old 4TB parity drive will now become just normal storage space).

Personally I know transcoding has uses, but they are extremely niche imo since the vast majority of video playback devices can handle all bar the most obscure codecs and can downsize / stretch resolution anyway - otherwise its like people watching camera copies of movies from the cinema - why would you even bother spoiling the experience by watching something so crappy resolution / audio?

  • Hardware much cheaper and better than anything Synology has even at double the price.

I'll take Synology seriously again once they stop using 1Gbe NICs.

    • for home use it's all most people have, though there is a slow advancement into 2.5GBps NICs in the home consumer space.

  • I was looking at this prior to Prime Day, and am I dreaming or did they jack the price up?

    • +1

The sale price has always been $558.99.

  • I bought one of these, added extra ram (CORSAIR Vengeance SODIMM 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz) and was using unraid. Worked well except I personally needed more grunt and it did not meet my expectation. Willing to sell it if anyone is interested HMU. I have the original usb and original RAM. Will sell it for same price with the 32gb RAM (will not remove it) and original ram and usb.

    • @zarz83 enable pm please. location? did you pay for the unraid and which package? the basic or lifetime? i just wondering is it normal for people to pay for the cheapest package and pay for an upgrade every 3 years (or more - only when there is significant upgrade on the o/s version not minor)? or straight to the lifetime package? what was your usage case that the machine doesnt meet your expectation? running multiple VMs??? editing 4k videos??

      • Hi, apologies I was not clear. I would sell but not with unraid. Did not meet my expectations as I had multiple VMs running. Besides that worked really well. I am in Sydney.
