Oral-B IO is a completely different platform. The heads are not compatible.
The IO series uses a magnetic levitation motor to be quieter. It also allows for vibrations and rotation.
I share an IO 3 with my dad, but the cost of the heads are eye watering.
On another note, I would not suggest people use the Ultimate Clean heads. Even on the sensitive mode, it brushes far too harshly, especially if you follow the pressure sensor's suggested force.
Gentle Clean + sensitive mode suits both of us much better.
Do you have experience with the older platform too?
I went with the older one just because of the cost of brush heads.
Not sure what I'm missing out on. The older one is pretty loud though.
I had generic versions that were compatible with the older Oral-B heads from AliExpress. They worked okay, but I found that they did not clean the back teeth or gum pockets very well unless I spent a lot of time and paid a lot of attention. Maybe the 1st party brushes + heads from Oral-B might be better in that regard, but I cannot say for sure.
I prefer Oral-B IO because it is quieter (closing the bathroom door reduces the sound to a whisper for other house members) and I find the cleaning experience to be better.
However, this was not the case initially, because the Ultimate Clean head that came with it destroyed my gums (even on sensitive mode) and I was considering refunding it until my dad suggested I give it another chance with a Gentle Clean head. With a Gentle Clean head, it is much better.
The only remaining things I do not like are the cost of replacement heads and the vibration reminders + overall timer that you cannot turn off. I like to take my time because my teeth are not straight and having a hard 2-3 timer where the brush turns off by itself is annoying.
If you do decide to get the IO series, I would suggest one of the cheaper models. The higher end ones are essentially extorting people who do not know how to brush their teeth and do not mind spending money for their toothbrush to teach them.
They have things like Bluetooth, app tracking how much time you spend in every section of your mouth, etc.
All these things can be had for free if you have the patience to look at a few YouTube videos from dentists on proper brushing technique (it's quite simple for electric toothbrushes), but if you want real time feedback, then I guess some may consider the super expensive ones worth it, since it is still less than the cost of unnecessary dental procedures.
@non-core promise: Coming from a manual toothbrush, even the non-IO ones seemed very aggressive to me. Now I'm used to it. For me the cleaning has been pretty good with no missed spots.
Maybe I should a cheaper IO and try it out.
I went with the Genius X which could probably be their last non-IO model with most of the IO features. It does have bluetooth, app based brushing guide, over preassure warning, vibration reminders etc.
I mainly got it for the tongue cleaning mode - I only use that, regular mode and the the over preassure sensor out of all the features.
I also get annoyed by the vibration reminders. I think they are app customizable. But haven't tried yet.
I’m using both the older 2000pro with floss action head and the iO3 with ultimate clean head.
The louder sound never bothered me, but yes, the older one is noticeably louder.
It wasn’t until I went back to the older one while the iO was charging that I realised the older model not only rotate back and forward (clockwise, anticlockwise) but it also shakes up and down (left and right if the brush is standing upright), and pulsate in and out a little as well. The iO feels much more refined, seemingly only rotate back and forward.
The iO head clicks on with a firm magnetic click, while the older one feels much more rattly in comparison.
Before having the iO, I never felt I’d want any more out of an electric toothbrush, all the bluetooth of the higher models seems all gimmicks to me. But after using it for a few days, I would prefer using the iO over the older one.
But the ozbargainer in me might keep me using the old one. The brush heads are half the price, it seems to clean just as well, and the extra motions might be a plus. Though it now feels a little too ‘busy’ compared to the slight hum and ‘calm’ feel with the more expensive iO.
One more thing to add, the iO heads are noticeably bigger, so may not be ideal for kids.
How is this different than the normal ones that sell for half the price like Oral-B Precision Clean
