      Stop visiting OzB then… lol

  • Awesome, thanks for posting this OP. I was waiting for a price drop!

  • very tempting.. but not sure of this or go for a 7000 or 9000 range R5/R7 instead?

      What do you do?

        Looking for actual opinions. LOL

IMO If you already have AM4 motherboard and RAM, maybe this. Otherwise get the 7000 or 9000 range.

The 9000 desktop series has been a bit of a flop with not much performance increase (if any) over the 7000 range.

      • I have a i5-8600 set up at the moment with 64GB of DDR4. Thinking of this plus a $200 AM4 Mobo and recycle the RAM/ storage/ case /GPU (2080) would be good? The i5-8600 is pretty underwhelming in the scheme of things.

        • Depends on how long you're planning on sticking with your system.. if you think you'll be on the system for 3-4 years.. this should be solid value.. if you plan on going 5+ years.. then maybe AM5 is your way to go.. the current 9000 gen is underwhelming.. but they should support the platform for enough duration for you to make a drop in upgrade..

This will be a massive improvement over the i5-8600. For the mobo you'll want one with good VRMs to handle the power draw. Similarly the PSU will need to suffice for the 2080 and CPU together.

          • @Bargainer99: Yeah.. been looking at Mobos and have found that the price difference in that scene is so ridiculous now (sub $1000 Mobos). I have a 850W PSU (branded.. not fake 850W) so should be fine to take all of that in.

    • If you don't plan to replace your motherboard and RAM, then maybe. But I would prefer a 5800X3D over a 5950X for general purpose (I have a 5900X).

I'll have to replace the Mobo for sure since mine is an Intel at the moment. I'd be keeping the rest (RAM, GPU, case, PSU, Storage etc). I only want a smaller upgrade to extend the life of the unit for another 2-3 years.

      • Why do you prefer the 5800X3D over a 5950X?

What if the choice was between 5700X3D and 5900X? Usage 20% gaming and rest productivity.

        • 5900X for productivity, 5700x3d is more gaming focused, if it was 80% gaming and 20 productivity id say 5700x3d… Also if you mainly game at higher res and are GPU bound you won't see much of a difference between the two CPUs.
