Suggested Age: Age: 14+

Red Rising is a hand-management, combo-building game for 1-6 players (45-60 minute playing time). You start with a hand of 5 cards, and on your turn you will deploy 1 of those cards to a location on the board, activating that card’s deploy benefit. You will then gain the top card from another location (face up) or the deck (face down), gaining that location's benefit and adding the card to your hand as you enhance your end-game point total. If at any point you’re really happy with your hand, you can instead use your turn to reveal a card from the top of the deck and place it on a location to gain that location’s benefit.

  • Not the best reviews but shouldn't be too bad for $20. I got it last time.

Looking forward to tonight. Should be some good discounts on something.

    • What happens tonight

      • The start of “Prime Big Deals Days”

Prime Day. I know lots of people find Prime Day disappointing but they usually have some pretty good discounts on board games (and other stuff I'm generally interested in).

I watched a few game play videos. But I think this is a good summary :) https://youtu.be/fyvyhkF8Xr4

    • This video makes all the games so easy to play 😁

So bought this in the last sale. This is as somebody who thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook series (brilliant narration, please check it out) and has played a lot of boardgames. It's not a particularly deep game and is pretty simple to learn. There's quite a bit of luck in the card draw, for example half the cards synergies with very particular characters which you may just never see as there's only one of those cards. It looks more complex than it is, but many of the mechanics feel excessive or bolted on - eg you can collect fleet power, fuel, and influence, but in reality they're just 3 victory point tracks which are scored in different ways. Similarly it's over constructed for what should have been a quite light game. There's also some pretty hefty "take that" mechanics that can really hurt and can easily be unavoidable. On the other hand the mechanic is pretty unique and I've never played a game with a hand building mechanism before.

Overall I'd probably give it a 6/10. Worth a shot at this price but doesn't have staying power.

Yeah, reasonable summary, pretty much agree. I appreciated the game more after finishing the first trilogy (haven't got to the others yet), but only in a "hey I get the reference" kind of way rather than improved gameplay.

Minor note about the synergies, quite a few of them can be completed with more common cards (e.g. many/all of X colour can rename themselves to complete the synergy requiring a person by name).

      • You're in for a ride once you start the next trilogy.

      • True, however I was referring more to the huge number of cards which reference Darrow, Minerva, and the Jackal. This is understandable from a theme a d narrative perspective, but it's not great from a gameplay point of view. There should logically be synergy there, but without any way to search through the deck you're running a huge risk of trying these strategies unless you have tyne cards ahead of time.

Pushing my memory there, but I think only a couple of cards (perhaps 1-2) can rename themselves to a named card. You can use any grey to be any colour though.

Honestly I wonder if they should have changed it so a few more of the characters had options. Eg "extra victory points for any rising leader (x, y, z)" rather than having so many cards rely on Darrow. This is even more frustrating if somebody forces you to discard Darrow.

Perhaps I'm just trying to play it like what it's not though, which is a serious strategic boardgame rather than something lighter. As it is though, to me it feels like it feels a bit like libertalia, which incidentally is also on sale and a much better game.

        • I think the big box and RRP makes me expect a 'bigger' game than it turned out to be; for $20 I'm happy enough for the infrequent game of it (as a bonus it also prompted me to listen to the books). Will look into Libertalia.

  • Bought this when it was last around this price.
