A low price in recent times on this previously popular M.2 2230 sized SSD that's perfect for upgrading the storage in handhelds including the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally. Get in quick as there's only 28 left at the time of posting.

This is compatible with other devices that only accept 2230 sized SSDs including Surface Pro 9, X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Laptop Go and more. Since this is a Gen4 SSD you shouldn't use it with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 7+ due to stability issues. Both of these have no issues with Gen3 SSDs. It can be used with various M.2 2230 USB-C enclosures found on Ali too.

This one offers a sequential read up to 5150 MB/s, sequential write up to 4850 MB/s and uses Toshiba BiCS5 112l or SanDisk TLC flash. Unfortunately 2230 sized SSDs don't have DRAM cache, but this one uses pSLC cache and HMB to make up for it so it's perfectly fine for gaming. Especially when a lot of other similar SSDs are QLC.

  • Bought one of these for my surface laptop 7. Works great, now just need to find an enclosure for the old 256gb.

    • +1

Came across this hub with a built in enclosure earlier today if it’s of any use? 20% off coupon available on the page

I can recommend this one from JEYI.

Hasnt this ssd been around the lower $130s……

    • Yep.

      • +1

        I was too slow :)
        Thanks for posting regardless.
Needed one for before I put a skin on my steam deck oled

        • +2

I got too excited and didn't scroll past my last deal. I already have 3 2230 SSDs and still need plenty more. One day I'll actually own a Steam Deck :P

          • +1

            @Clear: You need a lego :)

Let me get neg voted now haha

I have one of these ssds in my lego atm as the 4tb 2280 just kept giving crap performance and blue screens continous

Temps and performance have been great but need another one of these to put some of the games i had to delete on the existing 2tb so will pull the plug once the price is right.

Already have one of those small 2230 ssd enclosures so just need this ssd.

Thanks for always posting these deals

  • Also works great in a Lenovo Legion Go with an adapter..

  • +1

Be warned that you might receive one that doesn't work as in DOA. Happened to me on the other listing although not the same seller. Few others had the same issue.

  • Out of stock sadly

  • Thanks OP i was going to pull the trigger on one of these for 200!

    Back in stock @clear
These guys seem to usually restock the next day.

  • Is this compatible with PS5? Please update description and/or title with this detail.

    • Google is your friend

    • The PS5 has the screw holes for a M.2 2280 sized SSD instead of a 2230 sized SSD like in this deal. While you could use an adapter or MacGyver it in I wouldn't recommend it. Especially when you can get dram cache in a full size.

  • Back in stock.

The only promo code that worked for me was AUAF05 which gave me $5 off (total AUD 155.59).

  • can anyone tell me the difference between this and the normal sized one, also does this overhead if used as an external drive

  • is this good for gaming stuff or not, like external drive for ps4 homebrew

  • this is 30 bucks on temu, looks like a decent buy but i wonder if it can take a usb c to usb a cable https://shorturl.at/jUz4z

    • Yep A to C is fine with that.

      • can you tell me the benfits or downsides of this vs the long version that you see everywhere, i know its smaller but are there any downsides to that? thinking of building a 2tb portable ssd with this, that i could use for either my phone on the go storage with like the magsafe thing, or just a tin enclosure that offers better thermal protection for maybe storage of image video backups

        • The only real downside is the lack of DRAM cache if you wanted to write a huge amount of data in one go. In a PCIe slot this would slow down to around 400MB/s after 160GB has been continuously written in one go and you'd have to wait for the cache to recover for it to speed back up.

I use these in portable drives and that's not a downside for me as I'm not writing that much in one go. It's certainly much more portable.

          • @Clear: ahh i see, so would that problem not be existent with the longer versions? also dont these cap at like less than 1tb in speed due to hardware limitation of either the pc, the phone or the enclosure MOBO itself

            • @Roe Jogan: It'll depend on the SSD in the longer version. Many cheaper SSDs are DRAMless and will have similar or worse performance.

If you're using a standard USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) enclosure it's going to max out at 1250MB/s. A USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) enclosure is only good if you have a PC that supports it. While USB 4 and Thunderbolt 3/4 will max out at 5000MB/s.

I find 10Gbps perfectly fine for portable storage anyway as i tend to use them as Windows installers, storing programs and other stuff that benefits more from read than write.

              • @Clear: interesting info, would you say enclosures like the hagibis/baseus is good for heat management or should i go for like a ugreen or do you have any recommendations

                • @Roe Jogan: They're all pretty similar when they're metal enclosures and they'll include thermal pads to make contact. It's the pure plastic ones that won't be any good for heat.

                  • @Clear: interesting read, so for this if im only copying 160gb at a time, it should maintain 1250mbps speed if my computer has 3.1 usb, what if its only 3.0usb MOBO?

                    • @Roe Jogan: It would only get close to that speed if you were copying a single large file at 160GB. Lots of little files aren't going to be able to copy at 1250MB/s because they're tiny. So the speed for various reasons will jump up and down.

USB 3.0 was renamed to USB 3.1 Gen 1.

                      • @Clear: damn man that's what i hate when transferring images they are essentially tiny little files, what about the long shape ones will that not slow down coz it has larger cache?

                        • @Roe Jogan: The same will happen. A single large file is a big block of data that can be written in one go and allows the SSD to perform sequential writes. While a heap of small files (like images) are heaps of small blocks that need to be transferred individually and the SSD performs random writes.

This is a benchmark someone did on their WD SN740 in their PCIe slot. The "SEQ1M Q8T1" is the sequential write and they got 4876MB/s, while the "RND4K Q32T1" is their random write and they got 432MB/s.

So expect the speed to jump up and down on smaller files no matter what. If you zipped them up and copied they'd be in one big block and would transfer fast, however in the time it would take to zip them up it would have copied over anyway.

                          • @Clear: damn thats crazy, thanks for the info, final question why is it that the smaller one is way cheaper than the longer one. like im trying to search for a 2tb one that has similar speeds its like 200 bucks

                            • @Roe Jogan: SSD prices in recent times have gone up in price so you really need to wait for a sale. These are OEM drives shipping from China so they're always going to be cheaper than local offerings.

                              • @Clear: is this the same model but longer as this smaller one or newer?

                                • @Roe Jogan: Pretty much the higher end consumer version.

  • Mine arrived today. I put it in an enclosure, briefly saw it and tried to clone my steam deck … then it went offline and I've tried to connect it to my windows PC but errors out. So either my enclosure is dead, or its a DOA

    • +1

Doing the unthinkable (providing a follow up to an internet comment :P)

But it seemed like my "Eastele" branded nvme caddy died (at least with this drive), but tried another startech branded one I had which worked fine. After some back and forth, it's now installed inside my Steam Deck and seems to be okay… for now!

      • I appreciated the follow up.

How did your upgrade go? Want to do the same.

        • So far so good - booted a few games and it seems okay. Even did a SSD benchmark and it was reasonable.

      • Interesting. A previous deal with a different store some people had issues. Perhaps there's a chipset used in specific enclosures that has issues with this SSD.

I'll need to see if I can work out what they're using.

  • Deal is expired

  • Fast delivery. Paired with the recommended enclosure
Does get really hot with consecutive writing. I used a mini fan when doing a 2TB sanity check on the drive
Looks bigger than it really is :-)

    • How hot are we talking?

      • 72C, I then put a fan on it

        • Anything higher wouldn't be too ideal. My Jeyi hasn't arrived yet. Did it come with two thermal pads for each side?
