How many vehicles are in China? As of the end of June 2023, it is estimated that there are 420 million vehicles (including trucks) in China. Until 2020, the United States has held the top spot in terms of the number of vehicles, but China has now surpassed it and stands as the world's leader in the number of vehicles.19 Dec 2023

Get outta here with yo logic

Let the xenophobic ChiNA BaD Man speak his argument so we can all judge silently!

(I drive an LDV and have been pleasantly surprised)
Branded as an MG in Europe and India.

They may not be high quality, but these arent big dollars for cars anymore, really, and OP's post is right, its a lot of HP for the price, which isnt nessecarily a good thing

    • +8

You have no idea what's coming to Legacy automakers!
They are lowering the prices not because they can't sell them but because they are more interested in taking market share from legacy auto.
The price of Lithium battery's has come don't so much that they can afford to lower the price as well.
Most of legacy auto are now buying Chinese auto tech because they can't compete in technology and efficiency.
Just look at a Chinese auto shown!

      • +8

These are MY23. They absolutely are lowering the prices because they've been sitting in a warehouse for a year and weren't selling. $8k is less than the depreciation on a 12 month old EV.

        • +1

How many times does it need to be said that model year does not equal build date?

          • -1

            @jackary: Too many. Please stop.

An MY23 is only going to be older than a 2023 build

            • @opilot87: I bought an MY2018 Holden equinox built in 2019. so yeah there's that.

          • -2

@jackary: When MG gives you the option of buying an MY23 for one price, or a MY24 for more $, they absolutely are >1yr old year cars. It's a $25k car they put a big motor in, but in 95% of your driving its still a $25k car. The speed novelty wears off after a bit.

          • +1

@jackary: MY doesn't equal build date, but it is an indicator of age. Generally MY will launch the prior year, be built out in the new year and repeat for the following year. It's rare for a supposedly in-demand vehicle that launched in 2023 to still have stock this late into the cycle.

It's also no secret that MG's 2024 sales are down badly, with the last 3 consecutive months of sales down >20% on last year, following an already disappointing H1. That comes at a time when the Chinese competition are raking in sales - in part from MG, it seems.

If you think they're not struggling to move stock, I've got a bridge to sell you.

      • -5

Legacy is booming, while eletric isn’t. That is the reality. They are reducing the price because they can’t push the vehicle out. You don’t see legacy cars reducing their price.

If legacy want to take back the market share they are capable of reducing their price to pre Covid level.

      • -1

That's the biggest load of crap I've ever seen anyone write on OB 🤣🤣

        • This is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever seen anyone wrote in my entire life

    • +12

They aren't 'demanding' anything. They are 'supplying' a vehicle at a price, and if there is 'demand' for it at that price, they will sell it.

    • +21

Got x2 MG4 Excite 51 for $30,990 each, so happy with them :)

    • Is the software fixed in them? The only downside I see in those cars. Otherwise nice buy!

      • It does get updated - eventually, but you only get it when at a service which happens every 2 years. Unless it's a safety issue or you pay the dealer to do it.

        • Can't download it and update the car yourself somehow?

          • @serpserpserp: Not that I've heard.

BTW I test drove a Tesla Y (base spec) and Polestar 2 (top spec) today. Both very good and I will consider either. There are quite a few used Polestars on Carsales. I'm guessing ex rental or ex leased. Even in basic form I think they'd be pretty good.

            • @wfdTamar: I have driven both those cars, but not quite the top spec Polestar. Both are good cars, but I just find the Tesla's a bit basic on the interior. The Polestar is nice, but it is way overpriced and is an EV trapped in an ICE body. The middle console cramping the room for the left leg while you drive is a deal breaker. I've done a few long trips in them and I wouldn't buy one for that reason alone.

        • That sounds like a horror story waiting to happen. No OTA?

XPower version does have a few known issues that the others do not.
It might be better to wait for the 2025 update or get one of the other variants

    • The 2025s won’t be discounted this hard until late 2026.

      • +2

True, but you could be pulling your hair out with lots of warranty visits to the dealership.
Better to get the standard model for now Read up https://www.mgevs.com/threads/mg4-x-power-vibe-hum-65-to-75m…

        • If you read down in your link post #4 it says 4wd version does not seem to have the vibe. This is 4wd.

          • @plague69: Yes but there are 41 pages total so far. Later it emerges that the XPower is the one that most likely gets it (not every unit) but when it happens its mostly that model

          • @plague69: Just shows it poorly build car

They are priced according to buying power of customers or maybe they try to recoup some money of the overpriced raw materials they paid.

    • +1

Not once you get the $3500 state rebate back.

    • +5

Did they rehash a story from January 2023 that’s been resolved?

    • +11

It’s news.com.au so they’re doing the usual xenophobia “OMG china” angle so I stopped reading pretty fast.

There are at least two legit issues right now:

The manufacturer can communicate with the car (just like Tesla, Toyota, etc) and you won’t know. This means they can collect your data, send updates without a dealership, etc. Your linked phone is likely safe (for now) but car data is visible.

The US is moving to block car software updates in Chinese cars. There’s a minor security angle to this (5g core network was a much bigger potential issue) but this seems to be more “slow china down while our manufacturers catch up”. Terrible for competition, but if most US manufacturers go bankrupt in 5-10 years, there won’t be much competition left.

      • I wonder how deep in the dash that cellular module is. I think I might want to scratch it out.
No upside for the consumer I can see (MG does not do over the air updates)

      • +1

The manufacturer can communicate with the car (just like Tesla, Toyota, etc) and you won’t know

So if all cars are doing it, why is it bad that a Chinese manufacturer is doing it?

      https://youtu.be/7Olo7B2ZydI?si=xl468JcfJRt_t5cO

Maybe you should consider this is already happening with ALL the major brands already about spying on your driving and activities.

It's PURE projection from these legacy car makers to stop the Chinese cars from being competitors.

I haven't come across either car yet at the lights but have dragged a RS2 in an 3xcite 64 and won even though he had a half second start and about a carclength on me. Had no idea the guy wanted a drag race. OCE cars are no match for the instant torwue drom an EV

0-100 is 3.8 or some shit

quarters in 12 secs, terminal 115mph or so

that's similar-ish power to a Mustang or that kind of thing

the R35 GTR is unfortunately in another league 11 secs, 125mph

the MG is a safe buy IMO - its not going to age like a petrol hot hatch and I dont reckon the 2025 X-Power is going to change all that much

        • You beat an Audi RS3 in a car that does 0-100 in 7 seconds?

          • +6

            @ps5amateur: The Xpower does 0 - 100 in 3.8

Source - I also have one.

To quote people who I've given the 0 - 100 in 3.8 seconds demo to

            "JESUS CHRIST"

            "HOLY F******* S***"

            "F********* HELL!"

            And so on.

              @Ruddaga: you're getting dipshits who dont know a $30k MG4 from a $50k one

also let's see how you go with the warranty on these

              the MG4 is 10yrs

i think bmw merc audi are all still living in 1999 with a 3yr warranty

i know, i was purchasing extended warranties on a merc and they looked at you like they were doing YOU the favor

              • +1

@tonyjzx: I know the XPOWER does it in 3.8 secs, laser said the drag was in an Excite 64…

          • +1

            @ps5amateur: RS2 not 3 and looked a bit old

          • +1

@ps5amateur: Powerbands… its not like the hoon "race" went over 200km/h on a public road.. probably off the lights up to ~80km/h at best. EV instant torque will always win.

In fact I took my Atto3 for a lap at willowbank not knowing about its speed limit.. quick off the line and powering out of a bend… until I realised on a long straight its speed limited to 170km/h and eventually getting overtaken on the stretch by Golf R32… and that's after I found out reading in the manual AFTer the lap.

People don't understand the difference between "Quick" (Acceleration) and "Fast" (Top Speed).

EVs are quick cars because of instant torque acceleration, most of them aren't fast because of their lower speed limits (because they have single speed reduction gears direct drive off the ev motor and have an rpm limit). You could beat an RS3 maybe up to 100km/h, but watch it walk all the way to and past 200km/h.

MG4 X-Power top speed is 200km/h, may always get there first on petty road hoons.. it ain't gonna win on a long track, but would be awesome in gymkhana or hill climb.

I'm surprised not more EV owners get a race license and hit up the track on race test days.. you get a timeslip on drag or track, you've raced everyone

            • @dsp26: My point was you wouldn't beat an RS3 in an Excite 64 (the EV laser mentioned) over any more than maybe 20 metres. Agreed regarding the XPOWER - would be hard to lose the traffic light GP in one!

    • +1

will it be too powerful for daily use driving to office?

      • Not at all, in Normal mode its meek as a lamb. Sports mode is still ok if you have a light foot. If you gun it it gets scary real wuick

    • I have a general MG4 question:
Do you find the interior cramped for space? What car did you have previously?
Personally cannot decide whether to go for it or not - the cabin felt a bit small but I might get used to it (maybe)

      • +1

I test drove an XPower and a 77 the other day. The XPower made me feel sick it's so stupid fast (even the 77 did a bit). I found the interior a bit claustrophobic with that black headlining (my current car has a light headlining and a sunroof too).

The ergonomics didn't quite work for me, but only a minor thing. If I put the steering wheel where it was most comfortable it blocked the display a bit. If the display was mounted on the steering wheel binnacle it would work better. Headrest was a bit too far forward, but someone said you can reverse it,

      • I find it quite roomy, especially the back seats which one expects to be small in a hatch. It can take 3 in the back seat looks like. Front seats are nice and comfy.
        It didn't replace a car. I still drive a MB C200, a Patrol and a 370z

      • There is plenty of room inside. Since you have no engine, I usually have my front seats fully back and the people in the back still have room.

    • How you finding the handling? I test drove one and it's amazing in a straight line.. around a corner.. not so much.

Any settings you can do to adjust the roll of the suspension around corners? Like a sports/race mode?

      • +2

The regular MG4 i feel handled better when I jad it as a loan car for a few days. It was a really fun hatch you could throw around corners and the RWD brought a whole new dimension to the hot hatch experience. You can really feel the weight difference from the xpower

        • +1

I just found it a little disappointing when I drove it.. felt really "doughy" around the corners and stuff. Mind you, I do come from an i30N so in N mode, it's as stiff as it gets around the corner so it comes out very nicely without any over/under steer.

Not a fan of the interior though.. I was going to get the BYD Seal Performance mainly because the interior is night and day difference.

          • +1

@bchliu: i would agree largely with this

clearly the MG4 has the worst interior out of this group

but you can live with that at the $30k mark

also if you come from any larger car like a RAV4 then the interior size and amenities will be lacking

            its a hatch

i also have quibbles about how OTA is missing and the usual servicing issues with any of the new upstart dealers

you know they are going to be running defence for the brand

          • @bchliu: Its meant to be a nice comfortable daily driver. You can put stiffer springs if you want better cornering and taller tyres. MG Australia did this to one of the XPowers.

  • -8

Probably the best kW/$ car money can buy at the moment.

Not all batteries are the same and this thing is the equivalent of using those no name reject shop batteries that can't supply enough voltage when new let alone last more than 5 minutes to power a torch.

Don't take my word for it. Ask MG owners how their budget EV purchase is going. Like real people, not MG sales people online sock puppeting.

    • +9

'this thing is the equivalent of using those no name reject shop batteries that can't supply enough voltage when new'
Oh really? Where do you get your data for this statement?

      • +2

        From “real people”.

        • +4

I am real. Battery is fine.

    • So Mg's 10 year warranty is worth nothing then?

    • Lmao, upvoted as your opinion shouldn't be downvoted but replying as i just did some quick google and seems MG 4 owners especially are very hapy with their purchase. MG review. Overall sentiment is good.

I also did some more googling and it seems MG has made some very bad ICE cars that are unreliable but their EV's appear to be quite exceptional

    • +2

What’s with the brain dead comments in this thread? The batteries are made by CATL. They’re fine.

    • +2

These use CATL batteries, the same company that manufactures batteries for (in some models) Tesla, BMW, Hyundai and many others. They're the largest battery manufacturer in the world.

Whether or not they're spec'd correctly for the power draw is a different matter, but quality wise I'm sure they're just fine.

  • -6

R34's and Lamborghini's are cars for drivers, and that the MG can go from 0-100km/hr.in 3.8seconds in a street race is irrelevant as well as illegal.MG has also got some balls to advertise "100 years".

    • +1

Are you trying to make a point here or are you just saying things?

    • +2

People say this and then get behind the wheel of a base model Toyota.

    • Are those r34 and lambo 50k sticker price?

    • GM went bust in 2009. What's your point?

  • 0-100 km/h acceleration: 3.8 seconds

Almost as fast as a Hellcat, that's some serious acceleration!

    • +1

The XPOWER will beat the hellcat because of the instant torque
