Fast f/2.8 constant aperture allows users to capture images in dim lighting conditions and with a shallow depth of field.
Two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED elements, including one aspherical ED element, effectively suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations.
Two aspherical lenses, including one extreme aspherical lens (XA), minimize distance-related aberrations and also reduce 'onion ring' bokeh.
Nano AR Coating II controls flare and ghosting with support from a new optical design that reduces internal reflections.
An 11-blade aperture diaphragm helps create smooth, circular bokeh at all aperture settings.

Dammmnnn that's a good price. I paid about 10% more than that last year.

Very good lens. But I prefer to buy F4 as it’s not that heavy

Not sure why you've been downvoted. This F2.8 is significantly heavier is a valid reason to avoid it, depending on your needs/wants in a lens.

    • Agreed - money aside the 70-200 F4 Macro is super lightweight, compact and 0.5x macro.

Also pairs with TC’s if you’re after more reach.

      I personally prefer my 35-150mm F2.0-2.8.
It’s a bit smaller to transport and the extended wide end means I can basically use it in all situations barring ultra-wide landscapes.

      • have 35150 as well, great for someone want to carry the least amount lens yet want the most versatile focal range and still big aperture. but it is heavy and big. still lighter than carry bunch of primes.

        • @Hornpub and @Commodore64 I am eying Sony A7iv this Black Friday and hoping to get a decent deal. If my budget allows me only one lens for now, can I aim for this to be my first lens? Or should I consider this vs 70-200 F4? You mentioned it will be bulky, would be practical for day to day outings or start something smaller until I get used to it?

It will be my second camera after Nikon 3100 and third if we count iPhone. So, whatever I’ll get is an upgrade. My best usecase is family pics, portraits and some landscape. I want to lockdown model and etc so if I come across the deal, I hit the buy button.

PS: making sure we are talking about this lens

          • @ggmm2013123: The 35-150 is heavy, relatively to lighter lens but I don’t find it an issue in most circumstances.
Where a 70-200 tends to be longer and a bit narrower, it’s shorter and a bit wider.

In most circumstances it’s easy to carry and transport. Especially given the A7IV is the chunkiest A7 yet it balances well.

The F2.0 on the wide and is very useful and unless I’m going out at night to places I know I’ll be shooting in extremely low natural light and close at close distance….. then ill prefer the 35-150 over my 35/1.2.

Even if you were considering the 70-200/4 because it’s light… I personally preferred the 70-180/2.8 Tamron which I sold for the 35-250.

Ultimately while the 70-200/4 may be some people’s bag, it’s neither fast like 2.8 significantly long like my Tamron 70-300 (which is also very compact).

Ultimately If you could only afford to buy or carry one premium lens, then I would go with the 35-150mm.
For me it would be either that or a fast 35 and fast 85mm prime pair.

            • @Commodore64: Makes sense. I was going through my notes of last research I did and there was some suggestion re buying Tamron 28-200mm as well for consumer grade.

              • @ggmm2013123: The difference between 28mm and 35mm in my opinion are negligible.
To really get the most out of the A7IV I’d recommend the 35-150 or 70-180

Who ever negged you is obviously a very ignorant human being.

    • I am torn between the 2.8 and 4 - if not for the $1,000 price difference then for the significant weight difference.

I’m still tossing up whether to get the 2.8 as it has 1. Fully enclosed zooming - less chance of dust or moisture being sucked in (I sometimes shoot in light rain); 2. F2.8 gives added flexibility for shooting in evenings.

      • the normal 70200F4 second hand can be had for around 1200$, i think thats a good start to learn this focal range if it is your first time using this. really really depends on your needs. but at this range F4 F2.8 isnt THAT much big of difference, compare to the price ofc….

        • Thanks, I'll have a look into it. I recently went travelling with my Fujifilm setup - XT3 with 18-50mm f2.8-4. I found that I kept wishing I had more range than 50mm, even on a cropped sensor.

I moved to Sony quite recently. Given I shoot mainly landscapes, cityscapes and street, I am leaning towards the F4, but love the versatility a 2.8 would bring.

@ZoopDood: Have you also considered the 24-105? https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/camera-lenses/sel24105g#…

I have this permenantly fixed to my camera. Being F4 has never really been a problem for me (though obviously a little different than F4 at 200mm). I've taken a truckload of landscape with it - a number of which I love enough to have printed and displayed in my home :)

For my money I'd go the F4. If you decide you really need 2.8 sell it off and buy the faster lens. But this is quite a personal decision!

  • Many deals on this lens. Wonder if this recession is slowing sales?

    • Possibly. I wonder if their competitors are doing much to grow market share. I’m not familiar with what’s out there for the likes of Canon, Nikon and Fuji.

    • Probably losing sales to the new Sigma sports. Picked it up for $1886 the week before last and it's still under $2k.

  • One of my favourite lenses. That's a great price!

  • Great price - I finally received mine last week from Sony after being on back order after price matching for this deal in late August.

Go with Shopback if you can get a Sony price match, since it's 7% ($250 cap). No mention of excluding price matched deals in the terms and conditions, although they do unfortunately state "Any exceptions will be at the store's discretion."

After they got Ozbargained back then, Cash Rewards now specifically excludes this lens and the 24-70GM from cash back (at least when buying from Sony direct).

    Amex offer is still there!
